Mat 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.

This temple was originally rebuilt by Zerubbabel and Ezra (Ezr_6:15), but greatly expanded and improved by Herod. It was the center of Jewish life for almost a thousand years - so much so, that it was customary to swear by the temple (Mat_23:16), and speaking against the temple could be considered blasphemy (Act_6:13).

i. After Herod’s work, the temple was huge - nearly 500 yards long and 400 yards wide. Herod’s rebuilding work started in 19 b.c., and was only completed in 63 a.d., taking more than eighty years. The temple was finished only seven years before it was destroyed.

ii. But the temple wasn’t just big, it was also beautiful. The Jewish historian Josephus says that the temple was covered on the outside with gold plates, that were so brilliant that when the sun shone on them, it was blinding to look at. Where there was no gold, there were blocks of marble of such a pure white that strangers, from a distance, thought there was snow on the temple.

That's a good idea. It is called the Olivet Discourse. Everything is not in strict chronological sequence.

PART I

DESTRUCTION OF SECOND TEMPLE PROPHESIED
1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

QUESTION REGARDING FUTURE EVENTS AND THE END OF THE AGE
3And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall bethe sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

FALSE CHRISTS TO APPEAR FROM THE FIRST CENTURY
4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

WARS AD RUMORS OF WARS WILL CONTINUE
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:...

NATURAL DISASTERS WILL CONTINUE (AND INCREASE)
...and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS WILL TAKE PLACE STARTING IN THE FIRST CENTURY
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

FALSE PROPHETS WILL ARISE AND CONTINUE
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

CHRISTIAN ZEAL WILL DIMINISH
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

THE GOSPEL SHALL BE PREACHED WORLDWIDE BEFORE THE SECOND COMING
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

THE ANTICHRIST WILL SET UP HIS IMAGE IN THE TEMPLE AT JERUSALEM
15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand

THAT WILL TRIGGER THE GREAT TRIBULATION
16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

THE ANTICHRIST WILL CLAIM TO BE CHRIST -- CHRISTIANS NOT TO BE DECEIVED
23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe itnot.
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
25 Behold, I have told you before.
26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

PART II

THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST WILL BE SEEN WORLDWIDE
27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

THE BATTLE OF ARMAGEDDON WILL BE THE END OF HIS ENEMIES
28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

CATACYLSMIC COSMIC EVENTS WILL OCCUR BEFORE THE SECOND COMING
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

CHRIST WILL COME FROM HEAVEN WITH ALL HIS SAINTS AND ANGELS
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

CHRIST WILL SEND HIS ANGELS TO GATHER THE BELIEVING JEWISH REMNANT
31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

THERE WILL BE OUTWARD INDICATORS OF THE SECOND COMING OF CHRIST
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:
33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
****************************************************************************************************
THE RAPTURE PREDICTED AS IMMINENT, SUDDEN, AND UNEXPECTED
36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

WICKEDNESS (INCLUDING APOSTASY) WILL INCREASE BEFORE THE RAPTURE
37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
39And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
40Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
41Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
42 Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.
43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

WARNING TO CHRISTIANS TO ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO MEET CHRIST
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

FALSE CHRISTIANS WILL BE EVIL SERVANTS DESERVING OF HELL
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
50 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

I would offer. I would include the last verse from the previous chapter. It sets up the discussion and Jesus's action of walking away . . . I think as a way of making or confirming a point. . as he does in other occasions.

I think it might be like when it says Hebrews. . in these last days the father has spoken through his Son Jesus, our perfect example. .

He would say and do the will of God as the kind of food the disciples at first knew not of.

The words ...Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. Speaks of the abomination of desolation standing in the Holy Place . Which was the temple at that time period used as a shadow or type the until the time of reformation . It became the real Holy Place to those who had no faith. To those who did walk by sight as if the kingdom of God did come by what the eyes see .. shadow worshippers . The abomination of desolation I would think is worshiping the shadow or type and not the unseen eternal .(idol worship)

The Holy Place of God, the place of faith our living hope

He was walking away to show his disapproval. The disciples walking by sight seemed as they wanted to take him back on a "temple tour" in a hope he might change his mind but he obeyed the father and never entered, walked away by faith . But rather entered mount of Olives used to represent the kingdom of God not of this world ,

Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.Matthew 23:38-39 plus Matthew 24;1 King James Version (KJV)

The time of reformation had come the time period used as a parable of Kings in Israel had come to a end ,. God have gave them over to do what they should not of temporally . The faithless Jew because of their jealousy of the surrounding pagan nations that must walk by sight(no faith) demanded God give them a King .

He took back his kingdom and restored the government to a previous order before there were kings and temples. When men walked by faith.

Verse 2
But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, not one stone will be left upon another stone that will not be thrown down.”

These are the last recorded words of Jesus as he left the temple into which he would never again enter. This was the temple of Yahweh, the god of the Jews where they worshipped snakes near the alter. Jesus shunned wordly goods yet this temple boasted of them. Incense, burnt offerings, New Moon Festivals, their Sabbaths, and their religious gatherings were all corrupted by their sins. (2 Chron 28:25) (Isaiah 1:11) (Isaiah 1:13) (Deu 12:31 KJV) The father of the Jews was not the Father of Jesus. (John 8:44) Now the time had come for Jesus to make the way ready for the New Covenant that had been promised in the Old Testament.

Maimonides recorded that “Terentius Rufus, an officer in the army of Titus, tore up the foundations of the temple with a plowshare, that the prophecy might be fulfilled, ‘Zion shall be plowed as a field,’” Mic_3:12. This was all done by the direction of divine Providence.

Titus was desirous of preserving the temple and frequently sent Josephus to the Jews to induce them to surrender and save the temple and city. But the prediction of the Saviour had gone forth, and, notwithstanding the wish of the Roman general, the temple was to be destroyed. The Jews themselves first set fire to the porticoes of the temple. One of the Roman soldiers, without any command, threw a burning firebrand into the golden window, and soon the temple was in flames. Titus gave orders to extinguish the fire; but, amid the tumult, none of the orders were obeyed. The soldiers pressed to the temple, and neither fear nor entreaties, nor stripes could restrain them. Their hatred of the Jews urged them on to the work of destruction, and thus, says Josephus, the temple was burned against the will of Caesar. - Jewish Wars, b. 6 chapter 4, section 5-7. (Barnes)

Josephus says about the destruction of the temple:
1st. Justly; because of the sins of the Jews.
2dly. Mercifully; to take away from them the occasion of continuing in Judaism:
3dly. Mysteriously; to show that the ancient sacrifices were abolished, that the whole Jewish economy was brought to an end and the Christian dispensation introduced.
(Adam Clarke)

When Jesus arrived at the mount of Olives after leaving the Temple he renewed the discourse recorded in verse 3.

Now we who believe Jesus, Yeshua, are those living stones of the Temple, and He is the Chief and the Corner Stone rejected of men and taken to Heaven. Yes, we are indeed scattered, but He is comig back to rebuild His true Temple, amen.

I agree with the linkage of chapter 23 final and 24 initial.

He speaks of vengeance by god and blood and the end if the temple.

Disciples came to him on the mountain of Olives (Peter and Andrew his brother plus James and John his brother no mean disciples)

They asked him privately 3 things:

when those things will happen,
concerning the destruction of the temple

And what will be the sign of his presence (the translation with coming is wrong)

And the sign of the end of the world

Here I must add that this double sign is the kernel of the whole chapter which is a reply to the questions.

I agree with the linkage of chapter 23 final and 24 initial.

He speaks of vengeance by god and blood and the end if the temple.
Blood like water metaphors that represent the Holy Spirit who is not a man they are used to speak of the promise that he would come and demonstrate to the world the unseen work of pouring out His Spirit on sinful corrupted flesh (the Son of man, Jesus ).

What the letter of the law (pronounces us guilty ) could not do . . .give new spirit life. The law of faith (hearing God)performed as it worked in us to both will and do His good pleasure.. accompanied with a new spirit to help us in our disagreements the keep the sparks down.( murmurings and disputing" ) I come from a large family 11 space invaders (loL) . My favorite words my Mom would speak are..... Fight nice.

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: Philippians 2:12-14

When Jesus the Christ of his own will gave up the ghost .The veil was rent .The veil representing Jesus's corrupted flesh as the Son of man. The time of reformation had come. Those who tried to stop the destruction process of God of "no stone remaining" in His Holy Place the unseen place of faith as it is written , Was used as temporal as a parable. It had to come to its fulfillment we are under a different kind of government of God. More like the time period of judges as a Kingdom of priest. men and woman from all nation the promise of Joel coming with the new tongue the gospel of our salvation

There is still a remnant wall where some use as the idol (teraphrim) as those who have no faith. They are hoping there kind of Jesus will come and destroy the nations of the world. The ongoing tribulation of Jacob that began when the veil was rent. . They have no hope after death. They must wrestle against flesh and blood as used of the name Jacob(.no faith) Like any nation they have a need for the gospel

If I could add.

Jesus was unaware of such a request he never gives them any kind of direct sign. . . which would be in opposition to faith that comes by hearing prophecy . Jesus never once promoted a signs and wonder gospel

.The god of this world. . . that his selling point ." I will give you the glory of everything". Just have faith in what your eyes see. . . the kingdom has come. .keep your eyes open.

Jesus does not share His glory . His name is Jealous he owns all things... thankfully His love is not jealous showing us he is a God of great mercy .

Acts 1:7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

It was none of their business. Just like with Peter and John in John 21 . This is where its seems Peter was jealous of Jesus attention of John and wanted a little glory of his own. . . went off to town to started and new oral tradition of the fathers to be added. .Jesus called him a liar.

In Christ's offering of the signs of the times all things continual as from the beginning, wars and rumors of wars people getting married having children etc .It will be as in the days of Noah, on the last day he will come like a thief in the night. We have a unknown exact warning to the day. Like that of Noah we can be on guard .No direct answer did he give he gave . Many different metaphors in that parable.

One thing I noticed with signs is where the father of lies saying signs we expernce are all one as with prophecy . In effect he is saying (don't rightfully divide…) There are signs . And there are sign and wonders or signs with wonderments.. a source of future hope causing a living hope.

The last sign and wonder two parables working as one was given. Jesus says its a evil generation (natural unconverted man) that does seek after them.

The sign of Jonas and Jesus has been fulfilled . We are to compare the spiritual understanding of one parable to another.

Luke 11:29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they "seek a sign"; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

(the generation of Christ )The Christian generation, as those who do not seek after signs But walk by faith according to prophecy.

Matthew 24:1 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
Matthew 24:2 And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

Mark 13:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
Mark 13:4 Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

Luke 21:1 And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
Luke 21:2 And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
Luke 21:3 And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
Luke 21:4 For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.
Luke 21:5 And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said,
Luke 21:6 As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Luke 21:7 And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?

Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
And they asked him, saying, Master, but when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things shall come to pass?

The SIGNS of thy coming, the end of the world, the sign when all shall be fulfilled, and the sign when these things shall come to pass.

We know the period being spoken of is "the end of the world" - and we know the end of the world consist of the last generation, the fig tree generation because we are told the fig tree generation is when all will be fulfilled. We know the fig tree generation came into being when both the good fig and the bad fig were planted when Israel became a nation again in fulfilment of the prophesy of Daniel in 1948.

We know that Jesus will not return until this generation. and He is going to give us the signs that will be happening in this generation and previous to His return.

And that is my take on Verse 3 of Matt. I believe to get this story you must include in your analysis Luke and Mark.

They asked 3 questions:

When these things will happen (the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem);

What wil be the sign of his "presence" (which is not equal his "coming" (wrong translation));
Presence will be the beginning of the end,

And the sign that all the world is at the end of the end.

They asked for signs.

In effect he was telling the disciple they were not walking by faith . . . the sign they were seeking after was right before their own eyes .The sign of Jonas the last sign and wonder.

Every time Jesus was misunderstood or when he hid the meaning in a parable the disciples would revert back to natural man walking by sight and play. (the generation of mankind) . "Whose the greatest Alpha Dog." And Jesus (the Alpha and Omega) world have to bring them back in .

They were in fear of losing their false security.

This was still early in the reformation. Many things were being taught by Jesus as how we can hear him by faith. He who is spoken of as in "last times) reformation …. spoke through His the Son of man directly. The promise of the sign of Jonas. The generation of Christ fulfilled in the genealogy of Mathew.

Jesus closing up the genealogy book sealed it ..

Not the generation of evil called "sign seekers" or "experience wonderment seekers".

Matthew 1 King James Version (KJV) The book of the "generation of Jesus Christ", the son of David, the son of Abraham.

He gave the answer as a kiss on the lips (short contact) in the parable. (walk by faith not looking to the things seen the temporal).

The goal of his earthly ministry . . . how we can hear him who has no form better and better. He does the teaching and as the good teacher brings to our memory previous teachings

2 Corinthians 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
