Rather than piggybacking on what was most recently said, I'll start with the original question at hand. What would make my days and heart a lot happier would be free college for all who can pass the entrance exam for all citizens. No more minority grants to be sucked up by the institutions of higher learning. Just a decent education that doesn't depend on social, racial, geographic or other qualifiers to all citizens who can pass and more so free help to those who need their education to get beefed up a little to pass like math or English. A 12th grade education was a great leg up in the days of black and white TVs and Ozzie & Harriet but now days It's worth very little.
???? Actually..your response answers my OP TITLE question but how does it apply to my original OP explanation? ;)

As some of you know.i was a single mom to 4 kids most of my adult life..for years I've had single parents /unwed mother's on my heart for years..if I had the resources I would open a home for them..however..there's a woman in my small group at church that's a single mom to 3 kids..I can relate and I really want to do something special for her /them but it can't cost much..anyone seen the movie MOMS NITE OUT ..came to mind..lol..I don't know details bout the lady so I'm putting it out here on CC..help?

I'm praying for my 40 year old daughter. Divorced. 5 kids. Husband is in prison for molesting a daughter. She has done well, in my opinion, for the last three years as a single mom but I can see she is hurting and lonesome. She does not make much money and lives in poverty and I cannot help her much. She is an educated woman, accomplished pianist and good woman. I don't pray for money for her. I pray for a godly husband to share his life with her.

There are a lot of college degrees that are worth very little. By free college, please be advised that nothing is free from the government, the money comes from hard-working taxpayers. I suppose that the government could eliminate unnecessary programs to fund the free college tuition. Personally, I am tired of working and paying taxes that go to wasteful programs.

Funding "free" college would almost instantly become a wasteful program, if someone has no skin in the game then they aren't as likely to succeed. Someone who knows that they have a vested financial interest in completing college will work their butts off to complete it quickly and efficiently whereas if it's "free" there really isn't any motivation to complete. Why crunch to complete in four years when it costs you no more to complete in five or six especially when via government funded college you get free room and board along with it?

Once that program started suddenly attending college would become a fundamental right and every person (regardless of ability to complete) would be "entitled" to that free education.

Just a thought, and I agree that making it free is a bad idea... including for the reason Tourist gave (we all would have to pay for it)... But I was just thinking that if it was free, maybe they would make it mandatory like high school so that if one dropped out it would be as stigmaticized as dropping out of HS is now. Just a thought..

If college were free then it would just be 13th-16th grades. It would be high school 2.0 and all bachelor's degrees would be the new high school diploma.
Meaning the academics would be terrible (even worse than they are now) and employers would want more than just a bachelor's degree from you. So then people would run into the issue of having to pay their own master's degrees. People would start to wonder if maybe those should be free too. And it just goes on and on.

If something needs changing it should be K-12. So many students graduate high school without a good enough education. I tutor students and some of the middle schoolers can barely read! I know of several high school students who cannot do basic arithmetic. What is going on in public education?

I don't know if Japan still does it this way, but years back what we would consider to be middle school was the end for many. The top students would continue through high school and college on the taxpayer's dime but the lower achievers would get dumped into trade schools and from there into the workforce.

If everyone went to college there would be grade inflation that would render any degree that was actually completed worthless. I agree with you, without any skin in the game the college experience would be a joke. Also, if the government did provide 'free' education all those with student loan debt would start demanding that their debt be wiped off the books.

I am surmising that those that completed trade school probably made more money than some of the college grads as they learned a useful in-demand skill.

A big problem with the educational system in the US is that tenure protects the bad teachers as well as the good. Florida now has a mandatory test that each teacher takes at the end of the year. 30% of the teachers failed the retention test in 2018. It's a start in the right direction at least. I agree with your estimation completely.

I'm gonna be honest here...my senior year of high school I got gallstones and I was sick a lot...then I needed surgery. So I missed so much that school year. My grade in government was a 33. I still think today, why did my teacher give me a 70? Government is required to graduate high school. I also barely passed Algebra II the previous year and definitely flunked Pre-Cal. But the latter wasn't required.

I often wonder if my teacher gave me a 70 because I was a senior and the school wanted me to graduate. At the time, I was thrilled that he passed me. Later on (when I had to take government and remedial math in college), I wasn't too happy.

Is education wasted on the young? Or do parents and teachers need to be stricter?

They don't fail kids at all here. You pass into the next grade no matter how poorly you do. :(

Basic economics: the more there is of something, the less it's worth.

The same applies for college degrees. Currently, jobs that didn't used to require a degree now require them, jobs that used to require only a Bachelor's degree now require a Master's.

Perhaps it is the same way with friends. The more friends one has diminishes the importance of each.
