I think its a reference to the formation of the church that started at Pentecost and finally replaced the Mosaic system at the destruction
of the Temple and Priesthood.

That is a spiritual statement- see means understand and 'son of man coming' means the kingdom of God.
It is the same thing as:

Matt 26:
62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”

64“You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Simple, some lived to see Christ coming with the Romans armies in the 1st century - it was not a visible return. When God appeared on the "clouds" in the OT He was never seen, yet His presence was there.

Mat 26:64 Jesus *said to him, “You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN.”

Mat 26:65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy;

The reason the high priest accused Jesus of blasphemy is because he was stating he would be coming in judgment on the "clouds of heaven" as did Yahweh in the OT.

He was claiming the prerogatives only associated to deity.

Jesus stated that the people of the high council would live to see his presence/coming.

It's the disciples of denial that claim Jesus never returned.

Heb 10:27 For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”

The DOD have him tarrying for 1975 years and counting.

In it’s simplest form, it refers to the resurrection of Jesus and the
victory He won reclaiming the damage done in Eden. Jesus returned
to His rightful place when He left and the Holy Spirit the comforter came.

We need to bring the context into focus. So here is the context (KJB):
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. (Mt 16:27,28; 17:1,2).

Then we need to connect this to Matthew 24:30: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

So what we learn from these passages is that at the second coming of Christ (which is literal and visible to the whole, not something *spiritual*), He will come with power and GREAT GLORY accompanied by His angels (as well as His saints, which is not mentioned here).

Within six days of saying that some would not see death before they saw Christ coming in His Kingdom, Jesus was transfigured -- made majestically glorious -- in the presence of Peter, James, and John. So they literally saw the glorified Christ long before His actual second coming (which is yet future). This is the only way that this passage makes sense, since before His ascension the apostles asked about the restoration of the kingdom of Israel, and Christ told them indirectly that He had another objective at that time -- the Church.

To get the answer to what the Lord was talking about, we need to look at all three versions of what Jesus said:

"Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.” - Matt.16:28

"Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God arrive with power.” - Mark 9:1-3

"But I tell you truthfully, some who are standing here will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” - Luke 9:27

There are those who use this to scripture as their proof that Jesus' second coming would take place before those who were standing there had died, i.e. that His second coming would take place within that generation, but that is not what Jesus was saying. Regarding this, consider the following scripture:

"And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you." - Matt.12:27

So according to the scripture above, the act of driving out demons by the Spirit of God, meant that the kingdom of God had come upon them, which is the same phrase used in the scripture regarding some not tasting death until they see the kingdom of God arrive or the kingdom of God. Luke, being more detailed gives us the answer to Jesus' saying:

"But I tell you truthfully, some who are standing here will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” About eight days after Jesus had said these things, He took Peter, John, and James, and went up on a mountain to pray. And as He was praying, the appearance of His face changed, and His clothes became radiantly white."

In the scripture above, after Jesus says what is highlighted in "red," it then goes on to say "About eight days after Jesus had said these things" which demonstrates that what is about to be said is related to what Jesus previously said, which is that He took with Him Peter, John and James up on a mountain to pray and that His appearance changed so that they saw the Lord in His glorified state.

Conclusion: Those standing there who would not taste of death before they saw the kingdom of God, was Peter, John and James. The refence to them "not tasting death until they see the kingdom of God" is referring to Peter, John and James seeing the Lord in His glorified state and has nothing to do with the second coming. It also has nothing to do with the formation of the church or Pentecost.

I just got done posting pretty much the same information. As I said in the post, people attempt to use that verse regarding "those not tasting death" to prove that the second coming of Christ had already taken place, namely 70 AD, before those standing there had died, which scripture proves to be false. They also attempt to prove the same with the scripture which says, "This generation shall not pass away" inferring that Jesus was referring to the present generation from which He was speaking, which is also false. In doing so, they leave out the fact that the generation that the Lord was speaking of would be determined by all of those signs that He listed and which still haven't taken place yet.

True that, for I have been alive on this planet since the time that Jesus was alive on earth waiting for Him coming in His kingdom, and I am over 2000 years old, although I do not look a day over 938 years old, which I can also testify that Jesus is real, and a wonderful man, for I have been there, done that,lol.

But we know that a person cannot live for 2000 years, neither would God cause them to live for 2000 years to see the coming of the Son of man in His kingdom if it referred to Jesus coming in the future, and establishing His kingdom with Him ruling and all the saints will Him.

Mat 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

Joh 21:21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
Joh 21:22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.

Mar 9:1 And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.

Luk 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

Mark and Luke both say kingdom of God.

Luk 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

When a person receives the Spirit the kingdom of God is within them.

Act 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

So what makes sense is that some of them did not die, and witnessed the outpouring of the Spirit, which they received on the day of Pentecost, and people could receive, and the kingdom of God had come, and with power, for the kingdom of God comes without observation at that time, for at that time the kingdom of God is within you, although I believe there is still a kingdom of God where the saints will dwell together, the New Jerusalem, for Jesus said He goes away from this earth to prepare a place for the saints, that where He is at they may be also.

Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Joh 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Joh 16:16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

So at the day of Pentecost is when the kingdom of God had come, or as Matthew says it, the Son of man coming in His kingdom, for it is Jesus that came back to them in Spirit.That is what makes sense to me.

So how do you think he will ''see'' the Son of Man in this context unless Christ was talking about some other way apart from a physical personal appearance. The same line of thought can be applied to the Matthew 16 :27-28

Jesus is indeed the kingdom of God- when the Pharisees asked Him about the kingdom, He used some terms that He later used on Himself:

Luke 17:
20Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, 21nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”c

22Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. 23People will tell you, ‘There he is!’ or ‘Here he is!’ Do not go running off after them. 24For the Son of Man in his dayd will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

And Jesus also used so many similar statements that if one is to make a conclusion out of them, they would only conclude that "He is and was and is to come the Almighty" meaning that He has always been coming:

John 16:16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”

John 14:15“If you love me, keep my commands. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will bec in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

When Jesus spoke those words to the High Priest, they were not simply to him personally but to Israel and all unbelieving Jews in the future: Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (Mt 26:64).

This ties in with Revelation 1:7: Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

"They also which pierced him" is a reference to unbelieving Jews in the future who will see their true Messiah and weep and mourn because they failed to believe on Him.

This was already prophesied by Zechariah long before Christ said what He said, and John wrote what he wrote: And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. (Zech 12:10).

Just fyi regarding the above, let's not forget to include what was said regarding "what is it to you if I want him to remain alive," which is as follows:

"Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you? You follow Me!” Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”

Therefore, Jesus did not say that John would die, but only said, "what if I want him to remain until I return." The Lord's point was, "don't worry about him or anyone else Peter, you follow me!

Hi Tanakh,

When Jesus told the high priest that "he would see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven" he was either referring to the people of Israel of whom the high priest belonged. However, if the Lord was referring specifically to the high priest, then he was saying that he would the Son of Man arriving on the clouds while in Hades, so that he would know that the one whom he had crucified was their indeed their Messiah.

Jesus was referring to Daniel 7:13. The high priest knew that prophecy well, and is why he became enraged and demanded Jesus be executed.
