Yesterday, my five year old had her first eye exam. She did great! The eye doctor asked her if she was nervous, because she was talking non-stop, and she said, "No way! I am just SUPER. DUPER. excited!"

See, she thought she was going to be getting glasses. I have them, her dad has them, her big brother has them...she wanted to join the club, I guess. She said she hoped she could get some "pink princess sparkle" glasses.

What ended up happening, though, is that the doctor finished with the normal tests and then moved on to a bunch of tests I'd never seen before. And he re-did them a few times each, which had me concerned.

My daughter has...I guess it's called strabismus? Her left eye tends to drift off to one side when she's not purposely focusing it. It's happened since she was a baby, but her pediatrician never mentioned that it might cause vision problems. As a result of this occasionally wandering eye, her brain shuts off the signal to it- she can't identify some colors with it, and she's very near-sighted in that eye. If not corrected now, it can turn into a lazy eye, and cause problems with reading, and later driving, not to mention that kids can be cruel and she's about to start kindergarten.

So! We've been referred to Children's Hospital in Denver, where they will determine whether or not she needs corrective surgery on that eye.

My husband took this information very well- the doctor explained the situation, told us we should go to Children's, and my husband immediately said "Absolutely. Whatever we need to do." Meanwhile, I sat frozen in my seat, completely unable to process the information. Which is silly...it's not life-threatening. It's not like she's ill. She's not in pain.

But this is the first time I've received news like this. Seven and a half years of being a parent, and I've not once had to deal with anything more serious than an ear infection, a scraped knee, an upset tummy. I've seen other families go through serious things with their children that required multiple surgeries. I've seen other families that have one particularly accident-prone child, resulting in ER visits every other week. And here I am, internally freaking out because my kid might need the third most common type of eye surgery, where the biggest risk involved is that it might not work.

The last year has been a roller coaster. I hate roller coasters. They bring out the worst in me and show me what a wimp I can be.

I hope everything will go okay for you. That drive to Denver is a pain, but everything will work out well in the end.

I think I am going to treat myself with some luxury after two weeks with finals. I am placing an order from L'Occtitaine. I don't really need, but it does make me happy. (And it was on sale and I get free shipping.... who can resist that?)

Yesterday, I was struck by this great idea that my yard could use some spiffing up. I mean, in the eight years we've been here, I've done quite a bit with it, but since it's such a large space, I've by no means gotten to all- or even most- of it. So, in an effort to come up with some kind of plan, I drew myself a visual aid so I could see the whole yard at the same time, rather than going outside and wandering aimlessly around in the sun.

My first thought was that I have a lot of unused space. And trees. Not nice, tall, shade providing trees, either (with the exception of the ones on the north side). My second thought was that I'm really glad I'm not the one who has to mow the lawn here.

After much deliberation and over an hour of wasted time, I formulated zero plans and determined that the house should be doubled in size to fill up more space.

Also, I can't draw. Though I am pretty proud of those chickens.
I am going to hire you to do my garden next. Chicken included! This was impressive, and it looks like a huge garden.

At least this time of year she won't have to deal with snow going over the Continental Divide like I did on the way home from your wedding.

Mission accomplished!

...I survived the decorating deal. People liked the Edison bulb string lights so much they asked if they could keep them up for an upcoming wedding reception.

@AlaynaJ thanks :) I'm sure it will be fine...I just can't Not worry. Pretty sure it's genetic from one side or the other. And! At least it's summer time...as has been mentioned... I hate that drive in the snow, people drive like idiots over Eisenhower.

That sounds awesome! :D I may have to stow away in someone's luggage to get there though
It's a very big yard...which is both wonderful and exhausting.

MissCris lives in western Colorado. On I-70 at the top of the Continental Divide is Eisenhower Tunnel.

In local news, I just biked about 15 miles to work and it is my considered opinion that there is no such thing as flat ground. At least not in West Tennessee. A stretch of road can look perfectly flat, you can take a level a mile long and not detect any slope at all, but when you bike it you can feel whether it is going uphill or downhill. The difference being going uphill you feel like a wimp because the ground looks flat but you are struggling, and going downhill you feel like Superman because the ground looks flat but you are flying with little effort.

My enthusiasm for this getting-in-shape biking project keeps waxing and waning depending on my forward speed.

So on my drive Saturday, I was listening to songs we would sing back at my home church. I started to remember helping with the music team with vocals and leading worship about once every 5ish weeks. I said, “I miss singing. I miss leading worship” even though leading worship was not my forte.

Then yesterday morning, the music leader asked me to lead a song. I’m like “well... ok.” Lol.

Jesus basically said to me, “there ya go!” Lol.
