In the U.S., to say "going to the dairy" would in fact mean "the farm" - because 'the dairy' is where the milk is taken from the cow. However, if you said (or implied) 'the dairy area/department/section/etc.' of a store - well, that is what that would mean.
in nz the dairy is its own store where you buy milk, eggs and bread. It was allowed to open when all the other shops would be closed, 7 days a week and even on public holidays.
this is because Nzers cannot live without their fresh milk. Or rather the baby boomers couldnt.
I was talking to this american woman, at a retail store i worked, she said pass me the chips please. I said its not chips, its crisps. She smiled and i laughed afterwards but it made my day. I love her, and i love american women.
