Hi Mckerracher,
No I do not believe that we should get tattooed. Our bodies are God's masterpieces. I got one tattoo when I was 18 on my left arm, and now my views, beliefs, opinions, likes dislikes have changed and now I totally regret getting one. I know that my salvation is still secure and always will be but every time I look in the mirror I am reminded of the day I made that decision and it bothers me. Do from my own experience I have learned that what God has made is already perfect acc does not need anything added to it. think about it this way, if Michelangelo paint a masterpiece it probably would not be a good idea to pick up a paintbrush and start putting your own touches on it.
god bless you and I hope that you make the right choice.

Hi there. Obviously you are entitled to your thoughts and views about your actions.

Just wondering, if at 18 or whenever you happened to have gotten a Christian fish symbol <>< or a Bible ref. such as John 3.16 (in theory, quite possible, if it were some people), and such a tattoo design continued to open up opportunities from time to time for you to testify to people, would you regret it as much as you regret the one you have now?

Blessings.

If our Heavenly Father who created our bodies wanted us to have tattoos then He would have put them on us at birth. It takes a spiritual mind with spiritual understanding to know that marking our bodies is clearly not of The Lord. Tattoos no doubt originated from the mind of the devil. Anyone with spiritual eyes can look at a tattoo and realize how ugly they truly are. In fact, they mire the body, and that is the intent of the devil, to mire God's creation. I got a tattoo before I was saved and when I became born again I realized that they are not of God. It seems as if Christians today try to fashion themselves according to the image of the world. People will also say, well my tattoo is one of Jesus or a bible verse and it's okay. My response to that is Jesus should be seen in our hearts. Tattoos are nothing more than self image and Christ has called us to put to death our self and to live holy lives unto Him. Spirit, soul, and body.

If you happened to have had a John 3.16 tattoo and it had led to witness conversations with people, maybe you would think slightly differently?

Blessings.

My convictions would stay the same and my resolve not moved by opinions of men. No doubt if someone has John 3:16 on their arm and it leads to witnessing the gospel then God can use that for good. However I do believe it is not His perfect will to have tattoos just so someone can be a witness to the lost. Do you know what a true witness of God is? It is not an outwardly thing but an inwardly love that can touch the very depth of a person's soul. People should see Christ within working, and that is a beautiful thing. It is the Spirit of God that attracts the lost. Also, there are many other tools that can be used outside of the body to lead people to Christ.

Re. highlighted part, I strongly agree with what you say.

I see also that you say that God could use a faith based tattoo such as John 3.16 in blessing. We all have our personal motivations and strong likes and strong dislikes (maybe inevitably so, and Romans 14 on Christian liberty strongly implies this will be the case among believers).

Blessings, Brother and warm greetings.

Would Jesus get a tattoo if He were walking on this earth today? Would the holy apostles and prophets of old have them? I am confident without the slightest doubt that they would not.

I think we can also maybe recall that while Paul stood strongly against compulsory circumcision, which he taught would be tantamount to admitting that people were again under legal bondage...and yet, Paul circumcised Timothy, not because it was necessary or because it supposedly brought any spiritual benefit to Timothy, but simply as a pragmatic thing so that Timothy could have more witness opportunities.

Some Christians, agree with them or not, would regard a John 3.16 or Christian fish symbol <>< tattoo in the same light, I guess.

Blessings.

I want to obey my Heavenly Father, and I just cannot do what I want to do, even if I did want to get one, in which I do not. It is not my will but His that must be done.

I would tend to look at it from the angle of possibly increased witness opportunities for some - not all - Christians, particularly if the design is faith based. Like you say, there does need to be strong motivation.

Blessings.

Circumcisions were part of the old law, tattoos were forbidden in the law. The Christian fish symbol is not recorded as being tattoo'd on any disciple/apostle.

No it's not recorded, although its use is recorded widely among early Christians.

In Leviticus 19, where cutting for the dead is mentioned, the next verse mentions not trimming beards. I wonder if preachers who preach against witness tattoos ever shave?

Not trying to be awkward; just attempting some sort of consistency in application. The New Testament believer in any case is not under the law in the sense that Old Testament Jews with bushy beards were. (As it happens, I'm dispensational.)

Blessings.

I wonder what else you would consider "wonderful". You obviously have never read the book of Leviticus. That, or you are of the heathen, so it does not apply to you anyway, for God commanded us not to be as the heathen and carve or print images into our skin. Read it, then tell me how "wonderful" you think it is.

What if a John 3.16 tattoo produces a witness conversation? I guess this would be regarded as the whole point by the person motivated to get it. I talked to a guy with one, a while ago; and presumably other conversations have ensued also.

Seeing as how you looked at my avatar and seen my facial hair you are only looking for a fight, just to be right, and are trying to find fault with me for your own justification on getting tattoos. God above gave men beards to grow, He did not put tattoos on our bodies.

First you say it is not recorded, then you say it is widely recorded, which is it? And where are you getting this information?
Furthermore, Christ did not change one jot of the law, it is still in effect to this day. Stop wondering about what other people do and consider what you are saying is the truth or not.

Actually I hadn't noticed your facial hair. :)

I don't think I'm temperamentally divisive; it's more of an exegetical issue for me, I guess: why would preachers who shave be against a John 3.16 tattoo? (Looking at it in a more abstract way now.)
Blessings.

The Christian fish symbol <>< has a long history, actually, and has been and is widely used among Christians in a variety of means.

I don't see how the New Testament believer can be under the law, as the Jews were (I'm admittedly dispensational):

Hebrews 7.12 onwards:

For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. [SUP]13 [/SUP]For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.
[SUP]14 [/SUP]For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.
[SUP]15 [/SUP]And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,
[SUP]16 [/SUP]Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.
[SUP]17 [/SUP]For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
[SUP]18 [/SUP]For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.
[SUP]19 [/SUP]For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

Blessings.
