It's a little cruel, but not as cruel as what they do to male bulls. I used to think the saying "taking the bull by the balls" was just a figure of speech, until I read about Rocky Mountain Oysters and the accompanying "Testy Festy" celebrations held to consume the harvested "oysters". I guarantee you males of all species cross their legs and thank God they're not bovines when they first hear of this practice!
At the end of the day, God gave man dominion over the animals, and I understand that an excess of males necessitates an annual harvest of the accompanying excess "oysters", but if you're talking cruelty, I think any male creature would rather be whipped a thousand times than subjected once to confiscation and subsequent consumption of his nuts.
