Yeah, I'd rather not go very far. It seems like if something went wrong with the car, my options would be fewer.

lol...in all seriousness...I have no clue about Nissans. I've never known anybody that drives one.

Nissan running gear holds up very well if properly maintained (the same could be said of most of your major Japanese automakers - Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru...less so for Mitsubishi). I seem to notice, however, that Nissan interiors don't age well. The upholstery and switchgear in Hondas and Toyotas tends to hold up quite well. I've driven plenty of used Nissans that run great, but all the buttons and knobs and levers inside the cabin are falling apart. :/

Honestly, my first choice is a CR-V, but I'm looking at all my options. I'm not sure how much my settlement will be, and I'm looking for a car to get me through nursing school and a little beyond. Thanks for the input!

I don't know anyone who has owned a nissan, so I don't know if they are good or bad, but I hope you are reading the ratings and user reviews because the user reviews are especially helpful since they are opinions of actual owners of the car. Also, the editor's reviews are usually right.

Yeah, I'm reading online reviews and such. I just saw a Nissan at school and wondered what y'all thought about them.

I know the Xterra has won Import Car of The Year a few times in the past and it seems to be a great SUV in terms of features and stuff but I don't know how dependable they are or how good their build quality is.

Now I know. It looks like its very dependable (beyond 2006 models), but they say the interior is lacking and it doesn't get good mileage for its class
2011 Nissan Xterra X SUV 4.0L V6 5-speed Automatic Reliability

(from Edmunds)
The 2011 Nissan Xterra may lack the funky styling and unique features of its off-roading competitors, but it's the easiest to live with on those days when you're not rock-crawling and mud-splashing.

Pros
Serious off-road prowess; powerful V6; innovative cargo features; most livable truck in its class.

Cons

Unimpressive interior design and materials; poor fuel economy relative to similarly priced crossovers.

Me personally. I stick with American Made and Owned autos.

So id never have anything new. it would be old old old. and id rather have a diesel then gas. at least with deisel I can make my own fuel.

I own a 1994 Nissan pickup the thing has taken a beating from me. 75 mph car crashes, street racing, drifting, and hill climbing. The thing is the biggest trooper i have ever seen. Makes a Honda civic look like a joke. But that being said the only car in the world i would trade this thing in for is a Subaru. Your looking at about the same if not a little higher price then a civic. Better luxury in the subaru both get phenomenal gas millage and both are reliable beyond nearly every other car out there. Just to me a impreza (subaru) looks a lot nice cleaner, and its faster.... :) get the Impreza wrx sti. Your looking at killing mustangs in a 4 cylinder. But from my experience imports have a lot more dependability and 4 cylinders are the cheapest safest and more dependable.

Also a side note. CONSIDER A SUBARU BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE IF YOU LIVE IN A PLACE WITH A LOT OF WEATHER!

Subarus will beat 99% of trucks and cars in extreme weather. On youtube you can see them pulling ambulances out of snow, semi's out of snow. plowing through 4 feet of snow off road like nothing. Given a lot has to do with the tires and driver. But what civic can you say does that... what maxima can you say will go further then any dodge up a hill dodge = best truck for weather a lot of low end torgue with that Cummings turbo diesel ... I live in a rural area so subbies are awesome!.
