Would it be wrong to ask God to do something as a sign. Like say someone asks God to make it rain for 1 hour as a sign that God wants them to do a certain thing. Is that wrong? What about what Gideon did?

Hi, Selenah, I trust you been living your life for God since we talked last, you, young lady, of having the two snuggly, buggly, charming, batting-eyes, kitty cats :)

Perfect Love casteth out all fear. Hmmm....does perfect Love also cast out all doubt.

I mean, IF we understand God to be perfectly Loving to His own, that is, those who elected Him as their Saviour to lead their life, then, does that kind of stand to reason that perfect Love casts out all doubt from inside us, too ???

For without doubt, we don't need signs, do we :)

God says those are 'blessed' that believe on faith without needing signs. But, this is not a salvation question, just a 'faith' question of understanding, sel :)

John 20:29 - Jesus said to him (Thomas), 'Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'

When Peter walked toward Jesus on the surface of the Sea of Galilee, the more he doubted, the more he sank. I have asked for signs in my past. I pray I have more faith in the future. I think I limit what God can do for me when I tell him I need a sign. I think it is showing my lack of faith in His perfect wisdom. It is a difficult thing for me to accept. Then again, I am not perfect and will never be.

asking for a sign is asking for a glass of water while you are drowning. its not that we are nit given signs its that we don't know how to read.

This is what Jesus said.

Matthew 12: 38 Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given it but the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the south will rise up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.

Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or the height above.

But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.

And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also?

-Isaiah 7:11-13

To demand evidence that God is real or Jesus is His Christ like an atheist or whatnot would do, Jesus did condemn that.

To seek a sign from One whom you already acknowledge as the LORD because you are weak in faith and you need help to stay in faith to His promise, God said to not ask that and to call that tempting Him is to weary Him.

It depends on why you're asking. Are you asking for help, or are you demanding a requirement to believe?

I was mostly talking about asking for a sign about what to do. Like "God, if you want me to do _______, make it rain for one hour."

Hmmm, sel, one things for sure, you sure do know how to ask tough questions :)

God wants a personal relationship with us and His Holy Spirit leading us will lead us to understand Him, we will need no signs IF we are living our life in Him in true faith. And, we do not need to tell God that we need rain in order to not do something, for we will know from Him as a sequence of events, preponderence of coincidences that can be no other way than God leading your life, milady.

Didn't the Saints do that in the Scriptures? When they did, God performed, it was not called out as sin.

Gideon lacked faith in God because he asked God for a sign after God had promised that He will guide him in defeating the Midianites. Gideon simply needed to trust God's promise.
God may show someone signs to increase their faith but that doesn't mean He is pleased with them for asking. God loves those who show obedience based on faith like the man Hosea.

If you feel that the LORD is leading you to do something, make sure that you have a personal relationship with Him first--salvation (so you can trust Him completely) and that the task is according to His will. How do you know God's will? By searching the scriptures and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you, because the devil can make counterfeit.

Yes, we have the scriptures and the Spirit!
But...I feel like we may be making this sound easy...when many times, it really isn't that easy to discern what it is the Lord wishes us to do.

I just didn't want to blow you off with a quick answer, sweet child. I love your posts, your questions, and your love for the Lord. ♥

I will pray that you will hear the Lord clearly. I don't think, especially at your age, that it would be a bad thing to speak to your parents, or to those in spiritual authority over you (like a pastor/teacher/elder) for help in direction.

With a mother's love,
ellie

hi selena,

do not ask "Lord if you want me to......., let it rain for an hour.

rather ask the Lord as if you were standing right in front of Him.

"Lord i ask for... or can i.... ? then wait on Him without expecting
any sign(s).

the desires in your heart is not from yourself but from God that
put it there.

Matthew 7:7-11

love.

An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. Matt 16:4a RSV

Um okay guys I guess it does seem kind of wrong to ask God to do things like that. I used to ask God for signs like that ALOT when I was younger and still do sometimes. Always wondered if it was right or not.

I don't think its wrong to ask God for signs. Why would anyone think that it is? That seems silly to me. He will either give you one or reveal what needs revealed in some other way when its time. I don't think its wrong to ask God anything.

"Father, I struggle in this. My spirit is convicted that this is right, and it has peace, but situations lead me to question whether it is or not, and in my mind I am conflicted. Father, please give me some type of sign that this is your will and this is where you want me."

^Example of a Godly reason to ask for a sign. You remember the messenger of Abraham? He asked for a specific sign from the LORD that the woman he talks to would be Isaac's wife. The LORD answered and that specific sign was carried out. It's not wrong to ask if you are seeking to do His Will but you need help from Him to know what it is,
