They've Taken Everything Away From Us!!! Single's Awareness Day Joy Is Officially Dead. 😭

Hey Everyone,

Sorry for all the drama but that's EXACTLY how I felt when I went to scope out the After Valentines' Sales (aka, Single's Awareness Day!) this morning after church.

It used to be that even with these smaller holidays, the local stores would mark down Valentine candy/merch to 50% off. And since Valentine's Day is often centered around chocolate... I might not have an official Valentine, but at least I could have some half-priced chocolate, right? RIGHT?!

NOT ANYMORE!! For some time now, Walmart (at least here) only marks down its after-holiday items by 25%, and the other stores now barely even give a discount -- I saw $15 boxes of chocolate "NOW ON SALE" -- for $13. A measly $2 off??? Are you kidding me??? Christmas is long over, but that's more than enough to turn me into a Grinch twice over!!

I was listening to a video of two guys talking about what gifts are best to give on Valentine's Day, and one of answered with the classic line:




The stores USED to promise us half-price candy after Valentine's Day. Obviously, this year, it was a promise they didn't keep.

Now of course...

I need a bunch of chocolate like I need a heart attack or hole in the head, but it's the ANTICIPATION, doggone it all!! To know I could go to the store and find at least one or two favorites at a decent price!! But not anymore.

I can't help feeling that all the fun and joy of the holidays has been taken away from us singles -- even if it was in the form of high blood sugar and tooth decay. Le sigh.

Was anyone else out trying to find a good bargain as well? How did it go?

In my area we have a store called Ollie's Bargain Outlet, Auldis, and some bulk food stores, most of which occasionally have hidden leftover holiday treats. Walmart for years has done away with holiday sales, instead they play a marketing game of actually setting things a little higher in price during peak buys, then they drop prices to a normal price, but label it as sale or a buy 1/get 1. This marketing trend became popular on amazon and a lot of online shopping then stores ended up following the trend too.

Good luck getting your chocolate! I had to give up on junk candies due to diet. Now I just get me some baking choco-chips (with cleaner ingredients) for straight up milk-chocolate, and those tend to have the buy1/get1 deals.

I think if you wait a day or two it will all go down to 50% off. They're onto the post-valentines day scavengers so they try not to discount it too much the day after in order to not lose too much profit. But then they will probably mark everything half off later. But there might not be much of a selection left.

After Christmas, I listened to a video explaining that Target was marking down all its after-Christmas merch on a gradual scale, spanning over something like 3 weeks. I didn't want to spend the time or gas money to keep going back.

Unfortunately, the Valentine things were slim pickings today as it was, so I'm wondering if anything -- except the really ugly stuff -- will last long enough for the full discount.

This could be a subtle way that the Holy Spirit is telling me I DON'T need to buy candy.

At some stores, I'll see Valentine's out before Christmas has arrived, or Easter out before Valentine's has arrived or Christmas out before the Halloween stuff is even on the shelves. I just love retail smh.

I worked in a store where it was our job to do the "changeover" after every holiday. Pallets of merch for the next season are always in the back ready to go several months before they are ever put out.

I didn't get to spend much time with family on Christmas Day because that same night, I was part of the team that takes down everything from Halloween and puts up the Christmas display.

It's quite an ordeal, but it was interesting and I kind of liked being able to see all the new things before everyone else.

But, that was part of retail. I was always thinking of the other end.

Without all the consumerism, a lot of good, honest people wouldn't have jobs to support to their families, so it's a never-ending teeter-totter.

The bookshop I used to work in went out of business the day before Valentines Day. So there was nothing left except and empty store.

I don't know if any jewellers do half price jewellery - I didn't see any....though, I don't think you are meant to buy jewellery for yourself. At least, I've never done it.

Perfumes stay the same price.

Cards just get hidden away. Chocolates are rarely discounted because you can buy them any time of year. What's left is flowers, but flowers are expensive no matter when you buy them. Also, roses are best here in November, Feb is not a good time to buy roses in season.

Yes I have noticed a conflict of interest. You have been lamenting the stores' losses and at the same time lamenting your own lost opportunities for good deals.

I hadn't even noticed the sales were practically non-existent. $2 is not a sale... or maybe I'm cheap. Either way, I'm happy to not spend $15 when I can make something better at home (like some pies lol).

There are chocolate easter eggs and bunnies already in store at the supermarkets where I am. They even had hot cross buns with the old Christmas stock. Waay too early. Hadn't the supermarkets heard of Lent?

40 days!! Why dangle the temptation in shoppers faces so early?
