Hi Sawdust
New here.
Interesting topic.

John baptized with water to prepare for the Kingdom that was about to come in the teachings of Jesus.
John baptized for the forgiveness of sins.

Matthew 3:11
11 “As for me, I baptize you [a]with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you [b]with the Holy Spirit and fire.

He stated that Jesus would come baptizing with fire and the Holy Spirt.

In the Mosaic Covenant the Holy Spirit existed, of course, but He did not indwell persons.
In the New Covenant the Holy Spirit can now indwell persons.
This is because Jesus is God and when we accept Him, we will be indwelt with the Holy Spirit.

However, when Jesus told the Apostles to go and teach all nations and to baptize them...
He meant with water, and Jesus even gave them the FORMULA for baptism.

Matthew 28:19
19 [a]Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

In the NAME of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is a formula...
No formula necessary for when we are indwelt with the Holy Spirit.

Water is always necessary for baptism: (even after the resurrection)

Acts 8:36
36 As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch *said, “Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”[a]

It's interesting that the apostles didn't leave Jerusalem until about 38 years after the ascension, except for Peter and Luke. After they finally did dispersed outward, it was then that legend has them being killed in various ways and in various places throughout Asia Minor, the Middle East as far north as Magog. The Kingdom Gospel pretty much died with them and those they ministered.

Blessedly, our sins were not remitted based on water baptism since we are saved only by grace through faith in Christ and His death, burial and resurretion on the third day for mankind, coupled with nothing else of works and self effort, not of religious sacraments and rituals, lest we should boast as do those who put their faith in getting wet through dunking.

This is why you think I am rude.
You refuse correction after making dumb mistakes.
We all have made dumb mistakes!
I have had my share.

In the beginning Peter made some mistakes.

Like when Peter suggesting they vote to see who was to replace Judas.
We don't vote to grant someone a gift!
The Holy Spirit determines who gets what gift.

All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit.
He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides. 1 Corinthians 12:11

Even Paul made a few mistakes.

And, now it is your turn.
You are making some mistakes.

Not rude. Just sharing His Word.
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but one who hates correction is stupid. Proverbs 12:1

Just sharing His Word.

You interperted HIS word and your rude and you twist it to I"m the problem.

Got it.

That's why the King James appeals to many of them. .

Many times we can't understand what is saying.
Which opens up for some the freedom to make something up to say what he wants then to believe it is saying.

These teachers do not have to be smart. Only clever. And dumb.

We are in spiritual warfare.
The spiritual enemy will use and exploit those who crave maintaining the strength they had before they were saved by clinging to their natural stubbornness and obstinance to get their way.

It's dumb... it's dumb... it's dumb.
But they continue because they are numb.
Always being inspired by a wrong spirit.

Just move on, leaving them behind in their village.

Therefore, let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ
and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of
repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction
about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead,
and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so. Hebrews 6:1-3
Spiritual retardation is a self-inflicted state of loss.
They do not want to give up their old ways of getting their way,

Not wanting to be made humbled by being exposed and having to face their own stupidity once again.
Avoiding the pains and hurts of their past that they developed defense mechanisms for covering over.

Ironically... they turn their faith in Jesus Christ into a new defense mechanism to be stubborn, rather than
developing the spiritual growth mechanism to transform into a soul that no longer is stupid, but made wise
in knowledge of sound doctrine understanding it with accurately.

Ironically... Playing stupid to protect the stupid, ends up making one dumb. It lowers IQ.

So be it.

Where the KJV is superior in its many ways, you're right that the more ignorant play upon some of the difficulties in the older English in relation to modern conventions and vernaculars to dupe others in dishonest ways.

Lets look at verse 5 AND 6.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Did you notice the same thing like Acts 2:38-39 BUT in this case the promise was fullfilled?

They were BAPTIZED THEN PAUL laid hands on them and then they received the Holy Ghost.

Your statement is deceiving!!

Have you received the Holy Ghost like they did????

How were you baptized?

Yes. Let's look at the entire passage:

Acts 19:3-7
3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized [a]in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
7 There were about twelve men in all.

Verse 3-5 I've already stated that John's baptism was different than the baptism of Jesus.
One was for repentance and one was for receiving the Holy Spirit AND, of course, repentance - the baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit - which is what Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:19 - is a complete baptism.

Notice that the Holy Spirit is involved.

Verse 6 Paul laid hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

The laying on of hands was a way of passing on aurhority...
in this case the authority of receiving the Holy Spirit in a special way...thus the speaking in tongues.

This is a gift and will not be given to everyone that bellieves and is baptized.

1 Corinthians 12:7-10
7 But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
8 For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit;
9 to another faith [f]by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of [g]healing [h]by the one Spirit,
10 and to another the [i]effecting of [j]miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the [k]distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

Many received the gift of tongues so that the gospel could be preached...as all heard in their own language in Acts.

Acts 2:6
6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together and they were bewildered, because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own [a]language.

If your statements are correct, then we would all speak in tongues at baptism.

Clarify that with scripture.

When we are baptized, sins are forgiven and we receive the Holy Spirit:

Acts 2:38
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Sins are forgiven AND we receive the Holy Spirit.

It's interesting that the apostles didn't leave Jerusalem until about 38 years after the ascension, except for Peter and Luke.

What about Paul?
What about the other Apostles?
They just stayed in Jerusalem for almost 40 years?
This is not correct MM.

For instance, Paul began his missinary journeys about 10 years after he got knocked off his horse.
Ditto for Peter going to Rome...where he became the Bishop of Rome.

After they finally did dispersed outward, it was then that legend has them being killed in various ways and in various places throughout Asia Minor, the Middle East as far north as Magog. The Kingdom Gospel pretty much died with them and those they ministered.

The Gospel died after the Apostles died??

Blessedly, our sins were not remitted based on water baptism since we are saved only by grace through faith in Christ and His death, burial and resurretion on the third day for mankind,

Agreed. We may not understand fully why we must be baptized...but if Jesus commanded to do this...then there is a reason and we must comply.

coupled with nothing else of works and self effort, not of religious sacraments and rituals, lest we should boast as do those who put their faith in getting wet through dunking.

Well, that could be debated.

If your statements are correct, then we would all speak in tongues at baptism.

Thank you, first Johns baptism is different, why?

John's baptism was before JESUS accended, after JESUS accended HIS disciples waited as JESUS told them to and this happened.

Acts 2,
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

DID THAT HAPPEN TO YOU?????

Then Peter gave this message,
Acts 2:38-39
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, (((and))) ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

IF you notice he told them to be baptized in JESUS name for remission of sins.

SO JOHNS BAPTISM ENDED AND BEING BAPTIZED IN JESUS NAME STARTED.

Now we move on to Acts 19.

verse 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

SO THEY WERE BAPTIZED IN JESUS NAME, PERIOD....

AFTER THEY WERE BAPTIZED IN JESUS NAME, THIS HAPPENED.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

PAUL LAID HANDS ON THEM AND JESUS FILLED THEM WITH THE HOLY GHOST, PERIOD.....

I sure do notice the Holy Ghost being involved.

Sorry it is PROMISED TO ALL!!!!

How can you get the gifts of the Holy Ghost without having the Holy Ghost?????

How can we have a body if we are not all in the same accord?

YOUR CLAIM that they were speaking in languages to preach the gospel is CRAZY.

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Just because they heard in their own language does not mean they were speaking in their own language!!! BECAUSE NO MAN UNDERSTAND WHEN THEY SPEAK IN THE SPIRIT.

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

We need to read HIS word as it is.

I NEVER SAID, "If your statements are correct, then we would all speak in tongues at baptism."

Why would I say that when I can't back that up with HIS WORD??

Acts 8, baptized and then received the Holy Ghost DAYS MAYBE WEEKS LATER.
Acts 10, received the Holy Ghost FIRST then was baptized.
Acts 19, baptized and received the Holy Ghost minutes later.

BOTH WERE PRESENT, BOTH BAPTISM FOR REMISSION OF SINS AND JESUS FILLED THEM WITH THE HOLY GHOST.

JESUS said we need BOTH, and without BOTH we are damned!!

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water (((and))) of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Mark 16,
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Again I ask you have YOU been filled with the Holy Ghost SINCE you have believed????

How were YOU baptized???

AGAIN JESUS SAID IT, not me!!!

Do you konw what happenes to liars and deceivers?

I don't really think you understand the importance of chaning HIS word and I'm not saying you changed it.

BUT if your shaing the word that has been changed you are just as responsible for it.

KJV Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye (((shall))) receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Notice the word "SHALL"?

Meaning future!!!

The one you shared say "WILL"

I will leave the interpreting to those who do not follow HIS word ending up in story time.

You interpret it as being baptized with water. Where does it say anyone is being baptized with water?

If they are not being baptized with the Holy Spirit how are they receiving the Spirit?

KEEP IT SIMPLE NO NEED TO BELITTLE ME, JUST STICK WITH HIS WORD.

I have not belittled you but you need to stop yelling at me. It is very rude.

It's sometimes a little funky. I usually copy the quote brcket item and insert it manually within the other person's text, both before and after the content ofninterest. You also have to remove the forward slash in the bracket to open the quote, and leave the forward slash at the end of the quote to close the quote block in the final display. He meant with water, and Jesus even gave them the FORMULA for baptism.

Did He? Then why did He say baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Spirit? Why not say baptize in water calling on the name of the Father, Son and Spirit?

Why would He mean water when He knew his baptism was one with the Spirit and with fire?

Baptize means to inundate or submerge. One can be submerged in God (Father, Son and Spirit) without water.

The fact that the disciples kept baptizing in water was because they were slow to learn that a New Covenant was in operation, one established by the blood of the Lamb and it would require new methodologies. They had been baptizing in water under the Old Covenant in preparation for the Messiah but once He had completed His mission, the baptism was to switch to His baptism, with the Spirit and fire.

Peter had forgotten until his encounter with Cornelius and was recounting the story in Acts 11 when he finally remembered what the Lord had told them.

How can one be reborn of the Spirit, indwelt of the Spirit, sealed by the Spirit, filled by the Spirit and given a gift by the Spirit if the baptism one is to receive is with water? All those things occur with the baptism of the Spirit.

Water simply will not do what needs to be done. The time for symbols regarding sin and righteousness on credit is past. Christ achieved the reality of dealing with our sin and we enter into a real righteousness when we are baptized in Him.

John used water as a symbol of the reality Christ would accomplish with the Spirit.

Ephesians 4:5
One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

Since this verse mentions THE PROMISE of the Holy Ghost but no one is filled with it how do they get rid of their sins?

Who says they're not filled with the Spirit? You do, that's who. There is nothing there to say they are not receiving the Spirit when they are baptized in the name of the Lord. If anything, logic demands the opposite of what you say. If they are baptized, they will receive the Spirit. And seeing as one is baptized with the Spirit when they believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, it is only logical they will receive the Spirit.

You can continue to claim you don't interpret the word but you have your own particular understanding even when the word makes no mention of the things you say. They are your assumptions, not the word.

Thank you, first Johns baptism is different, why?

John's baptism was before JESUS accended, after JESUS accended HIS disciples waited as JESUS told them to and this happened.

Hey Ouch
Can't figure out how to separate my replies...
so I'll use the color green for my repllies....

Jesus told the Apostles and disciples to wat in Jerusalem because it was necessary for them to be empowered by receiving the Holy Spirit.

We can't take one occurance and generalize it.
Jesus also told the Apostles to forgive sins...but we don't go around forgiving sins.

I think I already stated that we will not all be getting the same gifts.

OK But I don't understand why this is a problem.
Jesus said to baptize in THE NAME of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.
THIS is HOW Jesus said to baptize.

Do we believe what Jesus taught or not?
I believe I've said that John's baptism was for forgiveness and Jesus' baptism was for forgivenss
but with fire and the Holy Spirit.

Are you of one of these denominations that believes that we must baptize in the NAME of Jesus?
If so, I'm not here to debate this since we'll be going around in circles.

Now we move on to Acts 19.

verse 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

SO THEY WERE BAPTIZED IN JESUS NAME, PERIOD....

Right! Instead of in the name of John.

OK We're going around in circles here. I've already replied to this statement and you're just repeating it.

Sorry it is PROMISED TO ALL!!!!

WHAT is promised to all?
Speaking in tongues?

How can you get the gifts of the Holy Ghost without having the Holy Ghost?????

EVERYBODY that is baptized receives the Holy Spirit.
NOT ALL those that are baptized will receive any one PARTICULAR GIFT.
You need to clarify this or this is going nowhere.

How can we have a body if we are not all in the same accord?

I agree!

YOUR CLAIM that they were speaking in languages to preach the gospel is CRAZY.

Oh. OK.
But even Gemini seems to know this accepted teaching.

The Apostles received the gift of tongues at Pentecost primarily to facilitate the immediate, miraculous spread of the Gospel to diverse nations, allowing them to preach in languages they had not previously studied. This supernatural ability served as a sign of the Holy Spirit's empowerment, validated their message to unbelievers, and reversed the language barriers created at the Tower of Babel.
Key reasons for the gift of tongues included:

  • Evangelistic Tool: It allowed for the immediate communication of the Gospel to the international crowd in Jerusalem, overcoming language barriers.
  • Sign to Unbelievers: It served as a miraculous sign to unbelieving Israel that God was doing a new work, signifying that the message of salvation was now for all nations.
  • Empowerment of the Spirit: The gift was evidence of the Holy Spirit's baptism, providing the Apostles with supernatural power to fulfill the Great Commission.
  • Reversal of Babel: It symbolized the unity of the church and the reversal of the confusion of languages from the Tower of Babel, allowing people to hear the wonders of God in their own tongues.
The gift allowed the Apostles to immediately begin building the church across cultural boundaries, as described in Acts.

Oh my. And yet Paul states that if one speaks in tongues and others don't understand him it will create confusion.
One is to speak...and another is to interpret.

And the point is: They were speaking Hebrew or Aramaic or Greek (maybe) but others there from outside of Jerusalem were UNDERSTANDING in THEIR OWN LANGUAGE.

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

We need to read HIS word as it is.

1 Corinthians 14:2 is referring to praying.
Why would I want to speak to someone in tongues if they don't understand me??

I NEVER SAID, "If your statements are correct, then we would all speak in tongues at baptism."

We need both.
Agreed.
But WHY are we damned?

Please explain better.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Again I ask you have YOU been filled with the Holy Ghost SINCE you have believed????

Baptize means to inundate or submerge. One can be submerged in God (Father, Son and Spirit) without water.
Well, usually persons are submerged in water.
If I tell someone I'm going to be baptized...they'll get a picture of water.
That's because WATER was used to baptize.

This might even work as a theory...
except that the Apostles passed on what they learned...even when they were not so slow anymore...
and they taugth that WATER is to be usesd for baptizing.

MUST I attend an Assy of God church or I will not be saved?

John used water as a symbol of the reality Christ would accomplish with the Spirit.

You interpret it as being baptized with water. Where does it say anyone is being baptized with water?

If they are not being baptized with the Holy Spirit how are they receiving the Spirit?

I have not belittled you but you need to stop yelling at me. It is very rude.

You don't call this belitting?

To be honest, you have me worried. You do not seem to understand the basic concept of what the Gospel is or what actually results from believing in Christ.

I fear it may have been another spirit that has taken hold of you. I pray this is not the case and that you have simply been taught poorly.

What do you think they are talking about in in Acts 2:38 when it says "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins"

I going to have to refer to what happened when baptiing for remission of sins started.

Matthew 3:1-6
King James Version
1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

Was John baptizing in water??

Was John baptizing anyone with the spirit??

I didn't ask you anything about the spirit, put the spirit to the side since Peter that is TO COME.

I ASKED YOU HOW DO THEY GET RID OF THERE SINS?

WHY DEFLECT??
