There are two easy ways to know
Col 2:16 is not speaking of the seventh day Sabbath in the 4th commandment.
The first way is to reconcile Scripture with Scripture.
Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Its about the sabbath(s) (
Col2:16) that were nailed to the Cross.
Did the weekly Sabbath commandment get nailed to the Cross?
First lets go to what Jesus said- did He say it would be nailed to His Cross? If anyone would know would it not be He?
Isa 56:6“Also
the sons of the foreigner (Gentiles)
Who join themselves to the Lord, to serve Him,
And to love the name of the Lord, to be His servants—
Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath,
And holds fast My covenant—
7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain,
And make them joyful in My house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
Will be accepted on My altar;
For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.”
What is His house of prayer? Lets let the Bible interpret the Bible in this case- Jesus
He quoted on this prophecy
Mat 21:13 And He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”
His house of prayer was the temple or house of God for worship.
Was there ever a time where all nations- Jews and Gentiles came together on the Sabbath before the Cross? No. Does His prophecies come true? Yes.
Jesus related the Sabbath being kept by His faithful in
prophecy until His Second Coming- so the Sabbath is related to prophecy of His Second Coming
Mat 24:20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the [
c]elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand.
26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.
29 “
Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30
Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn,
and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His [
d]elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
And the Sabbath will continue in the New Heaven and New Earth
That from one New Moon to another,
And from one Sabbath to another,
All flesh shall come to worship before Me,” says the Lord.
Going by the words of Jesus alone we know God's Sabbath, the holy day of the Lord did not get taken away at the Cross.
Jesus prophesized these things about the Sabbath- does it play out in Scripture.
Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way,
nailing it to his cross;
So immediately after the Cross, was the Sabbath in the 4th commandment nailed to it?
Luke 23: 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils
. And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
So obviously the Sabbath according to the commandment- the one that was written by the finger of God, not the sabbath(s) written by the hand of Moses was kept right after the Cross, not nailed to it.
Jesus predicted those who do not defile the Sabbath would come together in His house of prayer for all nations- did that happen after the Cross
Acts 13:42 So when the Jews went out of the synagogue
, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.
If it was something that ended at the Cross the apostles would be correcting the people, but did they on Sabbath-keeping
Acts 13: 44 On the next Sabbath almost
the whole city came together to hear the word of God.
Of course not because Jesus predicted His house would be a house of prayer for all nations- Jews and Gentiles for those who keep His Sabbath
The Sabbath was part of the council for Gentiles just as Jesus said-the foreigners (Gentiles) who join themselves to serve Him and keep His Sabbath
Isa56:6-7
Acts 15:21 For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in
every city, being read in the synagogues
every Sabbath.”
Jesus said:
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go [
c]therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20
teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always,
even to the end of the age.” [
d]Amen.
The apostles observed every Sabbath, with both Jews and Gentiles just as Jesus commanded them because it is one of God's personally written commandments and what Jesus predicts always comes true.
Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue
every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.
What we don't see after the Cross, because it was nailed to the Cross was the annual sabbath(s) that had to do with animal sacrifices that were handwritten by Moses placed besides the ark of God's covenant that the Bible calls as shadow laws, animal sacrifices and offerings
Heb10:1-10 what Jesus was predicted to end
Dan9:27
