I wonder why people followed Jesus then... I guess they were not seeking.
Have you ever noticed how a good number of them approached Jesus, asking him what they needed to do to inherit eternal life?

Why was that happening with the Jews?
The Pharisees had the people brainwashed into salvation by works.
Not only works... But works that the individually would prescribe for the people to do.
It is one main reason Jesus hated the teaching of the Pharisees.
In the mean while...
Jesus was seen by the people as a rabbi with his disciples.
Rabbis with disciples were known to promote a series of works to do to be saved.
Jesus was seen a very well known rabbi among the people.
So, many wanted to learn from him what works he would prescribe for salvation.
And?
That is why Jesus slammed them with needing to eat his flesh and drink his blood!
For he was purposely hitting them over the head with what they would think are works that He knew would repel them!
For he did not want people following Him who thought one is to be saved by their works.
Just the same.
Eating His flesh and drinking his blood, were spiritual, and not to be taken literally.
They were pointing to salvation...
So, in that way, Jesus shook off all the dead weight that had been dragging behind Him.
Setting was: John 6:60-66
Especially... Verse 60!
"On hearing it, many of his disciples said,
“This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
They were waiting to hear from Jesus what works he would have them to do.
And, they did.
And, that is why they took off...
