Sounds like they have a chip on their shoulder for the UPC. It's pretty ridiculous IMO to put a sect that believes Jesus is God and being baptized in Jesus' name on the same list with Islam, Jehovah's Witness, Scientology, Mormonism, etc.
They believe that Jesus is God only because they teach a "Oneness" doctrine (modalism) emphasizing a single God manifested as Jesus Christ, (non-Trinitarian). They deny the triune nature of God as revealed in Scripture, as well as teaching that one MUST be “baptized in Jesus’ name” ONLY to be saved and that true salvation MUST be evidenced by speaking in tongues. No rigid baptism formula, no tongues, no salvation. :cautious:

Do you think someone is going to be hurt by believing Jesus is God or being baptized in Jesus' name?

One will be hurt by teaching Jesus is God in the form of 'modalism' which denies that Jesus (God the Son) is distinct from God the Father in person and is God the Father manifested (basically masquerading) as God the Son, along with teaching that one MUST be water baptized using the rigid formula, "in Jesus' name" ONLY and MUST speak in tongues or else one will not be saved.

According to their doctrine, being water baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19) is an invalid formula which will cause one to remain lost. They teach a dangerous false gospel. Do you not see the danger here?

How will they be hurt? Do you seriously think God would cast them away for believing Jesus is God or being baptized in his name?

I think the tongues part is ridiculous, if true. I see absolutely no danger in believing Jesus is God and being baptized in his name.

That's because eis means "into". It doesn't mean "because of". In other words, be baptized into receiving forgiveness of sins, not be baptized because of forgiveness of sins.
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3-4‬ ‭

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:27‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:11-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

There’s a constant push to eliminate anything that teaches people what to actually do when you believe….. but why ?

The tongues part is ridiculous indeed and so is modalism, along with demanding that we must be water baptized "in Jesus' name" ONLY or else we won't be saved, which means all Christians throughout history who were baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit will not be saved.

The spirit of disobedience at work

indeed and even more specifically this being fulfilled

“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭4:1-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

or peters version of the same warning

“But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭2:1-2‬ ‭

Good question - maybe even the most vital one.

“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
‭‭

“And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Its never changed

What I mean is Gods word says

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38-39‬ ‭KJV‬‬

and then another word comes along

"hssss.. Yea, hath God said, be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..."

"hssss.. Yea, hath God said, be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..."
Amen !He did actually Peter was speaking by the spirit of God .

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. …..

….( peters conclusion after his first sermon speaking filled with the spirit ) ….Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:4, 38‬ ‭

his witnesses speak for him after he ascends to heaven look what happened at Jesus baptism

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:1, 9-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

look what paul says it means for those who are baptized into Christ

“And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham…..

…. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. …( the son ) ….And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:8-9, 26-27, 29‬ ‭

see what he’s saying ? God told Abraham “ all the families of the earth will be blessed tbrough you “from the start .

“and I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭12:3-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭15:5-6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭17:4-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

remember …

For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.….And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:8-9, 26-27, 29‬ ‭

thats to the church

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”( gods children in Christ )
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

to the church.

“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:11-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

To the church ….

Paul taught the most about baptisms meaning for a believer in Christ …..he just wasn’t called to do the baptizing. Others had been.

And for many it won't until it's all over and done.

However:

13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. 14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil. (Eccl. 12:13-14 NKJ)

8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered. 9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, (Heb. 5:8-9 NKJ)

Indeed

“obey Him,”

amen 1 hear the gospel 2 believe it and 3 do what you are learning from Jesus and his apostles more and more as you learn and grow in practice and purpose

It's interesting how you're noting how some of these theologies seem to work quite hard at diminishing, even negating the obedience. I agree with you.

BTW, I see the Text telling us that believing and obeying are so intertwined as to be inseparable and simultaneous, so I'd modify "2" above to say believe/obey it and from there into "3" it's a continuing and growing faith-obedience / obedient faith doing.

Good comments.
