Hello Pearshaped, welcome to CChat! I'm glad that you found us & joined in the discussions with us :giggle:

I'm sorry to hear that your walk with Him seems, well, pearshaped, right now! Is there something specific that you'd like us to pray about for you and/or for your walk with Him, or would praying that He would finally see you past these difficult times pretty much sum it up, for now anyway? Thanks!

I know what you're saying about feeling younger than we actually are :) Of course, at my age (I turn 70 next year), I always get myself in trouble if I abide that notion for more than a very short time ;) (I wish that it was true sometimes however because I know that my 6-year-old granddaughter wishes that it was :giggle:).

I'm also very sorry to hear about your chronic illness :(

Lastly, I hope that you find all of the things that you're looking for here at CChat (you should :)(y)).

Praying for you!

God bless you!! (Numbers 6:24-26; Isaiah 40:31; Philippians 1:6)

Hi David,

thank you so much for your kind words and the bible verses !

Yes if you like to, could you pray for real repentance and since my faith and trust and love is shrinking, a bucket full of all these four ?
That would be so kind and lovely from you. Im really in a pit..
oh and could you pray for brokenness ? I think thats what I need..

I have trouble with evil rebellious thoughts and since this battle has been going on for long (2,5 years) and I was not good in fighting it, repentance, faith, trust, love for Jesus everything is shrinking drastically.
But Im convinced true deep repentance is the key. But its not so easy anymore…

Of course I tell God Im sorry and that I want to change but next day one or two evil thoughts are there again. and so it goes.

I read in my bible every day but it feels empty and if I dont „fill myself enough“ with reading the bible the next day is mostly even worse. thats -in a nutshell - my story.

Oh wow you have grandkids, what a joy it must be (but probably loud,too.. ; )

I have trouble with evil rebellious thoughts and since this battle has been going on for long (2,5 years) and I was not good in fighting it, repentance, faith, trust, love for Jesus everything is shrinking drastically.
But Im convinced true deep repentance is the key. But its not so easy anymore…

I read in my bible every day but it feels empty and if I dont „fill myself enough“ with reading the bible the next day is mostly even worse. thats -in a nutshell - my story.

Hello again Pearshaped, thank you for telling me/us all of that as it is helpful to know what/how to pray for you, specifically :)(y)

I also know what you're facing when you speak of being in a battle against evil, rebellious thoughts, ones that just won't stop coming into your mind, because I faced the very same thing when I finally became a believer 39 years ago. It was HORRIBLE and painful, my "thought-life" that is, and it went on for so long that I thought it was something that I was going to have to endure for the rest of my life (on this side of the grave). PTL however, that's NOT what happened (I am happy to be able to report), because there is a cure or fix for this horrible problem of ours that the Lord established for us a long time ago :giggle:

First however, you need to know/understand that the horrible/evil thoughts that keep coming into your mind, while terrible and painful to you as a Christian, are NOT sinful, in and of themselves anyway (though our common enemy would certainly have you believe otherwise, of course :(). So, as soon as an evil/rebellious thought enters your mind from now on, do what the Bible tells us to do and REFUSE to accept it (by taking it "captive" and giving it over to the Lord to deal with instead .. e.g. 2 Corinthians 10:5), again and again and again, as necessary.

2 Corinthians 10
5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

I believe that this (refusing/taking captive our evil/rebellious thoughts, that is) is also the principal way that we obey another command from God, a command that comes with a wonderful promise attached to it, as well .. e.g. James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9).

James 4
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil ... and he will flee from you.

It seems that Satan and his demons like easy targets to aim their "flaming arrows" at, so they will eventually leave you alone when you continue to resist them, just as the Lord promises that they will (for a time anyway).

Finally, be sure to remember that the very One who saved you is always right there with you in every battle that you face (against both temptation and sin), including 1. making sure that the temptations that you face are not beyond your ability to endure, as well 2. giving you ways to escape from them (so that your temptations never need to become sins (y)(y)).
1 Corinthians 10
13 No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.

Praying for you!

God bless you!!

p.s. - this is enough for now (and my granddaughter awaits :)), but I will return later and get back to you about the final part of this, the Christian "discipline" that I just mentioned which, more than anything else (at least it was for me), will put an end to your endless/horrible/painful "thought-life", once and for all :) (the following Scripture refers to it, just FYI, both what needs to be done, as well how we best go about doing it in our daily walk).

Psalm 119
9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word.
11 Thy word I have treasured/hidden in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.

Hi Pearshaped, why do you believe that the evil, rebellious "thoughts" that are troubling you right now are sinful :unsure: Are you pondering them at length perhaps, or considering acting on them in some way :unsure: If you are not (and it doesn't sound like you are), then I don't believe that such thoughts, as disturbing as I know that they can be, are actually sinful (though sadly, they often serve the enemy's purpose pretty well by distracting us & causing our walk to become ineffective, to one degree or another :().

As far as getting rid of your horrible "thought-life" goes, I believe that "treasuring/hiding" God's word in your heart (by memorizing certain, key verses and passages from it) is the best and perhaps only truly effective way of doing so (at least in my case it was). However, I should also mention that it is anything but easy to do, and to be honest, it feels a bit legalistic at first (because memory work, even Scripture memory work, is hard, repetitious work, especially at first). That said, I promise you that the benefits and blessings that you will receive from doing Scripture memory work will FAR outweigh any amount of effort/work that you have to put into it :)

Most importantly, at least at first (especially for people like you and me), memorizing God's word, even a small part of it, will begin to cause your mind to be emptied of all of the horrible, painful thoughts that you are suffering through every day, and then fill it with something that is infinitely better instead :giggle:(y)(y)

The other amazing thing (along with your mind being emptied of the bad stuff) is that Scripture memory work will give no quarter or space for the bad thoughts to return (or for new, dark thoughts to gain any sort of foothold (y)). I'm not sure why or how it does this, I just know that, for me, it did and still does, decades later :)

So, if you'd like to look into the idea of memorizing Scripture a bit further and/or if you'd like some help knowing what to do and how to get started, just let me know (as I'd be happy to help :)). I was part of a group called The Navigators when I finally began to memorize Scripture. In fact, the program of theirs that I was involved in required me to do so (which made it easier to do, I suppose).

The Navigator system that I used is called The Topical Memory System, just FYI. It's a system that the Navigators have been using to train their overseas missionaries with for about 90 years now, so it is a proven system, and one that is available for anyone to use who wants to (and it's free). It even comes in the form of an Apple or an Android app now, which I HIGHLY recommend (we used printed flash cards when I went through the program .. actually, I believe they charge a very small fee for the apps, come to think of it).

Of course I tell God Im sorry and that I want to change but next day one or two evil thoughts are there again. and so it goes. I read in my bible every day but it feels empty and if I dont „fill myself enough“ with reading the bible the next day is mostly even worse. thats -in a nutshell - my story.
When you begin to memorize Scripture, you will begin to know Scripture (the portions of it that you memorize anyway) in a far deeper way than you've ever known it before, and by doing so you really give the Holy Spirit something to work with (so to speak). In fact, it becomes harder and harder to sin because the Holy Spirit will bring some of your perfectly memorized verses/passages to the very forefront of your mind as soon as you are tempted to sin (to remind why you shouldn't ;)).

It also becomes FAR easier to quickly recognize Satan's and his demons' attacks for what they are (all of their well-crafted lies, half-truths and deceptions, that is) because, as the Lord Jesus tells us, "you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free" .. see John 8:32. (I don't know you well enough yet to be sure, but I think that this idea, of deepening your knowledge and understanding of the truth of God, is probably the most important thing for you to do right now .. along with believing/trusting God by always choosing to take Him at His very word, no matter what Satan and/or your feelings are telling you in the moment .. just remember to take any/all such thoughts, ones that you know are opposed to God's truth "captive" as soon as they enter your mind, by refusing to believe them).

Oh wow you have grandkids, what a joy it must be (but probably loud,too.. ; )
Oh yes, Loud, but really FUN, and a great blessing too :giggle:

God bless you!!

p.s. - I'm very sorry for making this post such a long one, but I thought a somewhat extended explanation was best. Also, I've always found the following quote (by theologian/pastor Charles Spurgeon) to be an encouraging one in times of trouble, and I hope you do to :)

Spurgeon - Kiss, Waves, Rock of Ages.png
"We know that God causes all things to work together
for good to those who love God, to those who
are called according to His purpose"
Romans 8:28

Hello @Pearshaped, finally, concerning the distance that you are sensing between the Lord and you right now, here are some of the things that help me stay closer to Him in my daily walk.

First off, carefully consider what this verse (which is a wonderful command with a wonderful promise from God attached to it) has to say.

Psalm 37
4 Delight yourself in the Lord*, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

The key to this verse is not found in chasing after the things that we think that we want from Him, rather, the key is found in always chasing after Him instead :) He knows what we need before we do, and far better than we ever will, so focus solely on Him, on "delighting yourself in Him", and He will see that you have what you need and what your heart truly desires, too.

*(One quick word of caution, many have interpreted this verse incorrectly as, "Delight the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart", but that interpretation seeks to establish a kind of relationship, a quid pro quo, with Him that He simply will not abide, because it is useless, both to Him and, more importantly in this case, to us)

That said, the next question is, what are some practical ways to begin to go about doing this :unsure: Here again, the Bible has the answer for us in this little passage.

1 Thessalonians 5
16 Rejoice always;
17 pray without ceasing;
18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Some refer to this as "practicing the presence of God" in our daily lives (in fact, about 500 years ago, Brother Lawrance wrote a little book with that title). BTW, if you think about it, how beyond "cool" is it that the Creator and King of the Universe Himself wants us to not only include Him, but to make Him front and center in the moment by moment of our (seemingly insignificant) daily lives (which means that either our lives are not so insignificant to Him, and/or He knows how absolutely vital our growing relationship with Him is, for us).

If you'd like to give this idea a shot, the best way to begin is by remembering Him more and more often throughout your day. Then, whenever you do, think of or look around for something to rejoice in and thank Him for, like an amazing Bible verse, or your salvation, or all that He did and continues to do for you as His adopted daughter. Quite frankly, even the simplest of things will do too, like your warm home or bed or blanket/etc., anything that you feel you can rejoice in and thank Him for going forward from here. Eventually, you will even be able to rejoice in and thank Him for the stuff that you see as "bad" in your life, knowing that He is using everything in your life (even the things that you see as being "bad" in the moment) for your good .. e.g. Romans 8:28, 32/Hebrews 12:7-11.

That's it.

Praying for you!

Blessings to you in Christ!!

--David
p.s. - I LOVE your BEAUTIFUL country (though I've only spent time in parts of it, like Geneva & Montreux, Zermatt, Interlaken and Fribourg (where my wife and I visited one of her college friends and her family). I've also found it interesting how many different languages are spoken in different regions of your country :)

Genesis 32:22-32
New International Version

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”
But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”
“Jacob,” he answered.
28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
31 The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip. 32 Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

dear David, Thank you so much for this solid, good and easy-to-apply-advice.
You dont know how much I appreciate this and also your prayers ! THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I will give that a shot. Hope it helps to change my heart and increase my Love and trust toward God.

oh that is lovely to hear, if you ever get a chance to come to switzerland again, try the village Adelboden.
its small, some things are not special while there is a feeling that the earth is still „good“ there.
in this area there are still houses where the doorposts are carved with bible verses. A thing you dont see anywhere here.

I will come back, dont be surprised I wont have acces to my phone the next few days ! (I get a new one)
Hope you had a nice thanksgiving and a good time with your grandchild and children.

Hello Pearshaped, thank you for letting me know all of this, and please keep me/us updated on how things are going for you, particularly spiritually (as well any prayer requests).

Thank you too for the heads-up about Adelboden. It looks like an absolutely WONDERFUL place, and it is now on my list of must-see villages :) (I'd LOVE to see the Scripture-laden doorposts that you spoke of :) Also, one of the pictures that I looked at had a herd of cows walking down what appeared to be Main Street .. it certainly looks like a very charming place) :giggle:

Thanks for letting us know why you will be gone for a few days, and I look forward to your return here and to talking with you again!!

God bless you!! (

Psalm 41
New International Version

1 Blessed are those who have regard for the weak;
the Lord delivers them in times of trouble.
2 The Lord protects and preserves them—
they are counted among the blessed in the land—
he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.
3 The Lord sustains them on their sickbed
and restores them from their bed of illness.
4 I said, “Have mercy on me, Lord;
heal me, for I have sinned against you.”
5 My enemies say of me in malice,
“When will he die and his name perish?”
6 When one of them comes to see me,
he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander;
then he goes out and spreads it around.
7 All my enemies whisper together against me;
they imagine the worst for me, saying,
8 “A vile disease has afflicted him;
he will never get up from the place where he lies.”
9 Even my close friend,
someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
has turned against me.
10 But may you have mercy on me, Lord;
raise me up, that I may repay them.
11 I know that you are pleased with me,
for my enemy does not triumph over me.
12 Because of my integrity you uphold me
and set me in your presence forever.
13 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.
