The electoral college alienates voters. Since I live in a red State and don't vote republican, it's kind of like saying here's my vote can you throw it in the trash for me?
US presidents aren't elected by a democracy of voters, but by a democracy of states, so to speak, with more populous states having more electoral votes. Each state's people elect electors, and the electors elect a president. It was designed that way to avoid the instabilities of a pure democracy.
If you don't like the way your state votes you have the freedom to move to one that votes like you do so your vote can count.

I agree. I think the electoral college made sense in 1776 when the states may have seen themselves as separate entities. But today with a free flow of people from one state to another there really is no real reason to do this. Electing a president who has more electoral college votes and fewer actual votes is guaranteed to cause resentment.
However, if you do away with the electoral college you can be sure that the campaign for president will also change. Right now they must have a strategy to win enough electoral votes, with that change they will be focusing on winning actual votes which means the message will be tailored to cities and the coastline of the US where 65% of US citizens live.
