I hope it's okay to post here, given I'm not a Christian (at least not yet!).

I recently made the decision to read the Bible for the first time (embarrassing that I've never done it before, given I'm 41 now). Found the Bible app, and I'm reading (and sometimes listening to) an easy to read version, just so that I can understand it more fully. Started with the New Testament but will read the Old Testament afterwards. I'm also going to read a more full version once I've completed the easy to read one.

I've been using AI to discuss my many queries as I read it to make sure I fully understand it but liked the idea of joining a forum where I can read and join discussions with Christians as I try to understand the Bible, learn about Christianity and consider embracing it. I'm joining in good faith and look forward to the discussions.

Yes, it is perfectly fine especially because you are being respectful, which not every unbeliever
is who joins haha some join just to stir the pot, but enough about them LOL. I want to caution
your use of AI in relation to answering questions because AI will give opposite answers to
similar queries depending on how you phrase your question. Although it is also true that
asking a question here will get possibly many differing responses. I would say that if you
are on a diligent search for truth then you are being drawn by God and He will guide you.
I was a "seeker" for many years and finally surrendered my opposition to God at the age of 49.
I say I surrendered but it is more nuanced and complex than that...

^ Gospel of John is often recommended as a great place to start reading the Bible.
This movie is a word-for-Word portrayal of John's gospel.

Also, please check out the Alpha Course.

There are 10 videos total, answering a lot of questions about faith, Christianity historically and in the modern
world, the estate of man, and God's design for humans. I hope you watch them. They could benefit you greatly
.:)
The Alpha course for me anyways and probably lots of others too is pretty amazing because it is so comprehensive...
but also because I went through it myself, starting out as a non-believer which I had been the majority of my life,
to coming to a place where I realized I no longer needed any more convincing of the Truth of God's revealed written
Word, and I had resisted fairly strenuously for some time! So it was quite a relief to get to that point actually, and
stop fighting, and finally surrender. I was baptized at the end of the course, close to 21 years ago.

Hello Squiggle.

Everyone should read the most popular book in history from cover to cover at least once.
Here's my favorite audio Bible.
You might enjoy this classic option.

Squiggle meet Scourby< 🙂

I recommend starting in the gospel of John.
This book is unique.
It is the only one that claims to be written for you.

Thank you all for the welcome! I'll definitely be careful with AI. To be honest I started using it because I have questions that probably seem daft so I found it easy to ask AI to try and explain them for me.

As an example in the book of Matthew, which is the first one I've read, there's a bit (8:32) where Jesus drove demons out of two men into some pigs which drowned and then he was asked to leave the town. I didn't understand why anyone would want him to leave when he'd done such a good deed. AI might not have got it right (it said pigs were valuable and it's possible that the people were more concerned by the financial loss than they were impressed by the deed, or they may have feared Jesus' power) but it was good to get an explanation as it had me baffled but I'd have been embarrassed to ask on a forum!

I'm definitely going to be respectful. The Bible is such an historically important book that I feel I have to read and respect it, try to understand it and take heed of the lessons within. Having a welcoming forum like this to discuss it will be vital in aiding my understanding and my journey. Thanks again!

You are welcome! If you take into consideration the fact that in that scenario, Jesus was preaching and teaching in the region of the Gadarenes, a predominantly Gentile area where pig farming was common, despite the pigs' status as unclean in Jewish law, and the local population was more concerned with the economic loss of their pigs, which is why they asked Jesus to leave their region, revealing a greater value placed on their wealth than on the healed man. Heh AI did help me answer although I did already grasp the basics and thought your AI answer was pretty good...

A great place to get Bible answers is to visit a Bible believing church. Ask a pastor, elder or deacon. Another way is a Christian forum with lots of interaction, like this one.

AI is artificial intelligence. A better “online” resource of answers is gotquestions.org. Those answers are backed up by scholars, not computer generated probability.

RoboOp asked about that a couple of weeks ago. He's trying to fix that issue, so he asked if we could report it when blocked from entering. I don't know if everyone got the memo, so passing it forward.

"Guard the heart", surely you will hear enough to put the
mind in a precarious relation with the heart. I will leave it there.
Proceed with an open mind and heart. (y)

Thank you so much for this, I've watched the first 6 of the alpha series and will watch the rest later on. The gotquestions site is brilliant as well.

One of the things I like on the alpha series is when the host mentions that he likes to see evidence for things. I'd always assumed to be Christian you had to completely take the Bible at face value and that there wasn't anything approaching proof, which is something I know I'd struggle with, because how could you put the Christian word above any other?

It's started my learning journey which is at a very early stage but I'm already fascinated.

Before I started looking into it I wasn't even sure if Jesus had existed. But just by learning a little about the Bible a few things are immediately clear. Jesus did exist. He fulfilled a number of prophecies, including some outside his control. He had disciples and therefore must have been a very wise man, and the disciples certainly believe he performed miracles. From his teachings he seems morally sound, in a time when that probably wasn't common (it isn't even that common now!). He did claim to be the son of God and those around him believed it. He was definitely executed.

The resurrection is really interesting, and again the alpha videos gave me a different perspective on it. I'd always assumed there was an innocent reason for his body not being there, one which didn't involve rising from the dead. But none of it really makes sense. The authorities wouldn't move his body, or if they did they'd display it when people started saying he'd risen. People wouldn't steal it and leave the valuables. Followers could, I guess, steal the body to spark belief, but that's very far fetched and not suggested anywhere (and if the tomb was guarded it wouldn't be possible). I don't buy the idea of them going to the wrong tomb, and again the authorities could have quickly squashed it if that was the case.

It seems historically accurate that Jesus was executed and that his tomb was empty. Reports of disciples seeing Jesus after his death, and their outlook and demeanor changing dramatically are compelling. And obviously if the tomb was empty, there's no other good reason for it, and multiple people saw him afterwards, then the only logical conclusion is that he was the Son of God. I'm not quite there yet but I'm certainly looking into the reports around his appearances post burial, who saw him, who wrote about them afterwards etc. Genuinely fascinating stuff and I'm so glad you directed me to it

I think the believability of the Bible sets it apart from all others.

I agree with that now. I mean when I first approached it, I didn't realise how believable it was. The fact it was written so close to the events, the fact the different accounts back each other up, the historical evidence for Jesus existence and crucifixion etc. I never fully appreciated just how much of it had it verifiable facts. It's amazing really, considering how long ago it was written. Really glad I've started reading/ studying it as I never previously understood just why so many follow it, but it's becoming clear the more I read

I am so glad you are benefiting so greatly from the resources being offered to you! I wanted to say too that we are not expected to believe without evidence, and the best one can hope to receive is from God Himself so heh you may have to stop calling yourself an agnostic. I jest. Somewhat. LOL I also wanted to mention Lee Strobel to you. He was an investigative journalist who looked into Christianity due to his wife being one... he started out a total skeptic but was convinced by the evidence. It is actually kind of really neat that you have this record of your journey from unbelief to... wherever it leads. Twenty one years ago I came to realize that the Alpha course was meant to convince people of the truth of God's revealed written Word, and then on the heels of that insight I suddenly realized I needed no more convincing. That was the end result for me after years of running and rebelling and being defiant... One of the things I say is that I am so grateful God was gracious enough to me to allow me to survive the stupidity of my youth...

From-Romans7-18-19.png

From Romans 7 verses 18-19 Journey from Inability to Ability I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out... I keep on doing the evil I do not want to do. Praise be to God for circumcising my sinful nature, causing me to obey by putting His Holy Spirit in me, and giving me a new heart.
