Tell that to people who have been exonerated from crimes due to fingerprints, DNA or many of the other developments in Forensic science, all of which took place because someone was on death row and so the scientists dropped what they were doing and did the research for free.

There is no single factor greater than the Death penalty in reducing the number of innocent people in prison from 33% down to a few percent.
