The disciples had been asking what works must they do (pointing to works conjured up by men).
Those works were the works of men.
Jesus in response said...
God has a work of His own for us to do.
The law
“And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour;
as he hath done, so shall it be done to him; breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.”
Leviticus 24:19-20 KJV
“And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”
Exodus 21:23-25 KJV
“And
thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life,
eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”
Deuteronomy 19:21 KJV
“For the law was given by Moses,
but
grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
John 1:17 KJV
The Lords word
“
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but
whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.”
Matthew 5:38-42
that’s two different mindsets one is “ if someone offends me and hurts me I’m told to retaliate in equal measure an eye for an eye tooth for a tooth life for a life ect told and taught do not show pity but take equal revenge
the other is telling me when someone offends you don’t retaliate with evil but overcome evil with good . Leave room for the lord to take vengeance and take non for yourself but instead forgive when someone sins against you bless when someone insults you and don’t curse in response ect
different testaments and mindsets
The law
“When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it
come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then
let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.”
Deuteronomy 24:1-2 KJV
The lords word
“And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him,
Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them,
What did Moses command you? And they said,
Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.
And
Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; and
they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
And in the house
his disciples asked him again of the same matter. And he saith unto them,
Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.”
Mark 10:2-5, 7-12
It’s important to make sure we’re listening to the right word and covenant because one of them is not like the other
“but their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth
the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament;
which
vail is done away in Christ.
But
even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.”
2 Corinthians 3:14-15
What I mean to say is there are
the works of the law we find in Moses doctrine e.g. “ eye for an eye tooth for a tooth go ahead and divorce and remarry if your not happy “
and then there are the actions of faith we find in Christs doctrine “ turn the other cheek don’t take revenge forgive don’t get divorced unless there’s adultery but if you do don’t remarry “
Two doctrines are present in scripture
“Whosoever transgresseth, and
abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God.
He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
If there come any unto you, and
bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:”
2 John 1:9-10 KJV
