You can bet that this guy was elected to cast an aire of legitimacy toward criticism of America.

That would be very French, like when King Louis IV slaughtered the Knights Templar on Friday 13th, 1307 and seized their assets, and the Pope Clement V did nothing, even though the Templars were suppose to answer to the Pope only. The French King had sway over the Pope then. Though God's vengeance came against them both, Jaques de Molay, the Last Grandmaster of the Templarx being burned at the stake in 1312 cursed both the King and Pope and said they would die within the year, and they both did die within the year.
However, I doubt Trump asserted influence over the Conclave. What is interesting is in the Conclave (2024) Movie the one who becomes Pope was newly made a Cardinal, just as Pope Leo has only been a Cardinal twenty months. Interesting.
Donald Trump is going after child traffickers. If the Catholic church was used as a conduit for these child molesters and we know that much of the NGOs assisting the illegals entering the country were Catholic charities, then he could easily have had information that would have blackmailed the cardinals.
Trump posting a meme of himself dressed as the Pope is incredibly weird. Either you believe this guy is a complete egotistical nut job running the US government, or else you believe that meme was a signal. If so then JD Vance being the last person to see the Pope alive, followed by that meme followed by the first American Pope are three dots that are connected.
