Hi , has anyone here watched the Passion of Christ ? The film Mel Gibson directed ? Would u recommend it ? I'm a bit of a softy and cry at films , I'm often inconsolable 😬 . I also don't enjoy gratuitous violence and I've heard it's quite distressing . Can u tell me what u think please ?

I didn't know what to make of it. I thought it was a good movie but I'm not sure how much of it was real and how much was just gratuitous violence to sell a movie. I've heard Roman crucifixions were brutal, but I wonder if they were that brutal. It's definitely violent and bloody. It's in Aramaic, Hebrew and Latin, but it has subtitles. Sometimes people can't enjoy a movie if they have to read subtitles.

Thanks for your feedback , I know lots of people who have watched it but only a few if them were Christians and they said it was brutal . I shall probably give it a go . If u feel like it , have a read up about Roman brutality . Apparently , the Romans used lead cooking pots and pans and lead would have gone into everything that they ate . Then look into how lead poisoning affects humans . Not a pretty picture 😵 . It goes some way to explaining their hideous torture methods and madnesses .

From a non-carnal view , it is a very impactful movie, and you will be emotionally processing it for a while after you see it. Go with friends you can share with afterwards.
Pray He guide you through it before it starts.

I've not watched it. I have seen a few scenes and yes, it is violent. No, it's not gratuitous. Jesus really did suffer more than any man.

I love the movie....but.... given your self description I would be careful. For many of us this film has stayed with us for a long time. I'm not sure it is good for sensitive adults and is absolutely not for children.

I always recommend people watch it. Is it horrific, graphic, unimaginable? Yes. That is likely some of what Christ went through. (I believe he suffered worse.)
I re-watch it every year, around resurrection Sunday. Because I never want to lose sight of the pain that God-man took in my place. I never want to take His love & sacrifice for granted.

I watched it, and from everything I've read and heard, the brutality was very correct. I've read that to be "scourged" was often fatal. The whips that the Romans used had pieces of metal or lead attached to the ends of them, in order to inflict maximum damage and pain.

If you are, as you stated, then I would tell you to not watch the film. You could watch it up to the trial and scourging, but that part of the movie is very difficult to watch. I am not squeamish in movies, but, knowing this is what my savior endured for ME made it very painful to see. I have not watched it a second time, and may not ever.

Knowing what he suffered for us is important.... I think many people just gloss over his death.... "yes he was crucified for us"... without knowing the extent that he suffered for US.

It might help to know where the word "excruciating" originates....

The word "excruciating" originates from the Latin word "excruciare", meaning "to torment, torture, or crucify," which in turn comes from "crux," meaning "cross". The word's etymology is directly tied to the pain and suffering associated with crucifixion, a Roman method of execution.

It is a difficult movie to watch, however.

Thank you for your reply , I'm grateful for the input and I shall think about it a bit more before I decide .

If you are going to buy I or rent it; I recommend getting it in Aramaic, to experience the story in its original language.

It makes you focus on body language and emotions more, helping you to be more engaged in the brutal beating and death of our Lord and Savior.

Thank you , I'm ok watching stuff that is pure fiction , but this isn't fiction and I know it will upset me , but as someone else said , I think it's important to have a good idea just what our Saviour went through . All for love .

The film was originally in Aramaic, I wasn't aware there are English versions. Don't let the language scare you, you will not even be aware of the language once it begins.

Tons of people are afraid of death but when you watch the brutal beating and death, you experience it and you aren’t as afraid of dying anymore.

That is what happened with me at least. So as I suffer in the real world, to die is gain and to live is Christ.

Just remember it's all theatrical. Sure it depicts something that did actually happen; but the movie isn't real. If you ran into Jim Caviezel, he'd look very alive and normal.

U know , thinking about that , he certainly suffered more than any other who has been crucified . Usually , if someone was scourged , they were then released . Jesus was scourged and then also crucified , I'm guessing that's why Simon of Cyrene had to carry his cross , it would have rested on his back but as he'd been scourged he wouldn't have been able to carry it himself .
