I seem to recall reading in the OT (which I don't study as much as I should) an account of some guys sent to kill (or capture?) somebody but they were detained en route by either fits of laughter or was it prophesying or? It was something unusual.

Not referring to the 50 soldiers destroyed by fire or the Syrian soldiers struck with blindness.
I tried googling it but the details are so foggy in My mind I cant seem to get a Lock on it...Maybe I just made it up.

1Sa 19:18
So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
1Sa 19:19
And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.
1Sa 19:20
And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
1Sa 19:21
And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.

That sounds like the story of Balaam, it does have some humor and is referenced in more than one place, the main story is in Numbers 22, it’s worth it to read the entire encounter but the verse below is a high point for the reader, a low point for Balaam.

[Num 22:23 KJV] 23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

Revelation as well as Jude and Peter also reference this story:

[Rev 2:14 KJV] 14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

[2Pe 2:15 KJV] 15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam [the son] of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

[Jde 1:11 KJV] 11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.
