Russia does not need to defeat Ukraine militarily. They are well on the way now, courtesy of the West's ignorant indifference. Russia will be content with a compliant Ukraine government such as in Belarus. If the West forces a capitulation by Ukraine with no security guarantees, it is over. The present Ukraine government will be overthrown and pro Russians installed. That's enough for Putin to declare victory.

What do you mean? The Islamists were banished to Idlib, so there was peace in the areas controlled by the SAA for several years. There was corruption, but that's definitely better than head chopping
 
SDF controls Syria east of the Euphrates River; about 25% of the country. This is the part in which the US is garrisoned. No chance that Jolani (HTS) by himself can capture it, but with the help of Turkey that wants to rid Syria of Kurdish (SDF) control, it could happen. Violence is guaranteed

I think "banished" is not the best choice of words. HTS captured Idlib. At first, it was another version of the Taliban in Afghanistan. That went about as well as you'd expect. I imagine that HTS did not need dissent in Idlib as they needed a base to continue their attacks in Syria. So yes, Idlib and areas controlled by Kurds were not as brutal as the rest of Syria.

It's too early to say what the future holds for Syria. It could become separate states, ruled by various factions. It could be a total disaster like Afghanistan. Turkey wants to reconstitute the Ottoman empire. No doubt he is inspired by Putin. Jolani may be sincere, a Muslim version of Nelson Mandela. Even if he is, there is no guarantee that he will be able to please both conservatives and more liberal Syrians. He's already being criticised by both sides. Usually, that means people are doing the right thing. I'd not be investing in Syria right now.

Yeah they captured Idlib initially, but what I meant was that they were sent there from every other city and region they occupied after Russia negotiated their transfer to Idlib in green buses. That spared Syria a lot of bloodshed and destruction. Consequently, Idlib is under Islamist rule with its typical oppression. The rest of Syria didn't want that; that's what the whole war was about. So it returned to a peace it knew before the Islamists started trouble.

"Peace" is one word for it. Anyone who dared to disagree with Assad was imprisoned, brutalised, tortured, raped etc. HTS has opened Assad's prisons and the stories are grim.

You may have noticed just how few Syrians chose to defend the Assad regime. That speaks volumes in itself.

You're believing a lot of myths. CNN just got caught trying to perpetuate that narrative when Clarissa Ward discovered one of those people in a prison, who turned out to be a corrupt gov't official that Assad had imprisoned. Corruption by many gov't/military officials who were bought off by foreign money to betray Stria is what destroyed it. Assad tried to reform it but was unable. Same thing as what's happening in Ukraine. You're not close enough to the real news to know what's going on. You probably get your info from TV
