Hey Everyone,
It's officially December and I have been eagerly awaiting a chance to try out this game!
For anyone who might not know, a White Elephant Gift Exchange is (according to Google) -- "A party game in which guests exchange wrapped gifts that are often impractical or amusing. The goal is to have fun, not acquire a valuable item. The game is also known as a Yankee Swap or Dirty Santa."
In the "Dirty Santa" version, guests can "steal" wrapped gifts from other players if the think it's something they'll like better -- even though they have no idea what it is since it's still wrapped. When I've played this game, the "gifts" are inexpensive, silly gag gifts given just for laughs, or unwanted things you have at home or received in other gift exchanges. It can also be very funny if, for example, a man winds up with the "gift" of a frilly, sparkly hair accessory (and it's especially funny if the man is bald!)
I have been trying for weeks to think of how to play this game in the form of an online threads (I've read about texting versions but it's all done in real-time with visuals, which we don't have here,) so let's give it a try and see how it goes! We might need to tweak a few things along the way, but that can be part of the fun!
Here are the "rules":
1. Read what "gift" has been left in the latest post.
2. If you'd like to pick up it, write, "I'm taking the (name the gift so we don't get confused,) then post a picture or tell us what "gift" you're leaving for the next person.
For example: "I'm taking the shiny hair bow, and leaving this fake mustache instead."
3. If you don't want the gift, write, "I'm passing on the shiny hair bow and leaving it there," so the next person knows it's still up for grabs.
If people keep passing, write, "I'm passing on the shiny hair bow, too," so that we know the last gift mentioned is still in play.)
4. For those who are truly "special" , you can choose to briefly wear/use/enjoy the the gift for a minute, but then put it back down again for the next person to decided on.
For example: "I'm trying on that shiny hair bow, but I'm taking it out of my hair and leaving it for the next person -- even though it still has 3 of my hairs attached to it."
The next person can choose to pick up (maybe they'll say it's still perfectly fine, brush the hair off it, and use it themselves, then pass it on again,) or take the hair bow to keep and leave the next gift (describing what they're leaving in words, a picture, etc.), or not touch it all, saying that they are passing and leaving the hair bow as the next gift.
5. If the current gift doesn't seem appealing, a reader can go back and "steal" another gift from someone in a previous post. If this happens, the last gift mentioned is still in play.
For example: Let's say the fake mustache was the last gift mentioned but I have the hair bow and Lynx wants it instead. He can then say, "I'm stealing the hair bow from Seoulsearch and leaving the fake mustache instead."
I know it might get confusing but we won't know if we don't try, right? (And thanks to @Lynx for his ideas on how to work out this thread!)
So -- let's get this party started right!!!
The first gift I'm going to put on the table is:
This lovely nose hair trimmer -- never used, I promise -- and the picture is for demonstration purposes only!
Ok, who's next? What will you decide to do with this gift? 1. Pick it up and keep it (while leaving another gift.) 2. Pass and let the next person decide. 3. Try it out -- and leave it as the gift for the next person.
And yes. Part of me wants to see who has the gall to use a nose hair trimmer and then leave it for someone else!!! (Especially on a Christian forum!!)
So... One again, we have this very useful nose hair trimmer up for grabs -- What will YOU choose to do?
All are welcome to play, but I thought this also might be nice for singles who often don't receive any gifts during the holidays -- and after this thread, they might not want to!
