It has also been explained to you that prophets were used to lay a foundation in the building of the Church. That foundation are the scriptures. There is nothing you can say that has not been said by God in full. You can claim you are a prophet till the cows come home, it doesn't make it so. The scriptures trump your experience every time.
When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.
“Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt.
Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” Matthew 2:13
Joseph was not a prophet. He never assumed he was…
Some become mislead in believing they are a prophet just because God gives them dreams.
In the early Church, those with the gift of prophesy without having the completed cannon
of Scripture would give forth instruction that otherwise no one could study about.
For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God.
Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.
But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening,
encouraging and comfort. 1 Corinthians 14:2-3
There is no comfort to be found in being a preacher of doom.
Especially one who offers no solid teachings as to comfort and encourage and to strengthen.
This would be a true prophet as one functioned in the early church...
But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others
than ten thousand words in a tongue. 1 Corinthians 14:19
Being a psychic is not the same thing as what was given as a prophet.
But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying,
they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, as the secrets
of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming,
“God is really among you!” 1 Corinthians 14:24-25
That is what a prophet in the early church could do!
Today, a few mature pastor teachers having the completed cannon of Scripture to work
with in the anointing of the Spirit, can do what the prophet used to do before the Scriptures were completed.
Having dreams that come true does not make one a prophet.
That was only a small part of what a prophet contributed to the churches.
We can all have dreams that come true. Some, more than others.
