The Bible's word "prophecy" is roughly equal to our word today "preaching," when it applies the Bible passages to the hearers' lives.

Can you show some examples of usage of the term in the Bible that illustrates that it means that.

I think Peter gives us a good rule-of-thumb understanding of what the word means. Peter wrote that holy men of old spake as they were carried along by the Holy Ghost.

That's generally what it means-- Spirit-moved speech. Often prophecies were preceded by 'Thus saith the Lord' followed by quotes from God.

Evangelists peached, but evangelist and prophet are different ministries in Ephesians 4.

As I see it, the gift is new life from God through risen Son to all the people to believe it or not. Not be anybody better than anyone else ever in my honest opinion.
To ge the done work of Son done once for everyone and love all as are loved by God first. That be Son going willingly to his flesh death in our places, that was not understood until after he was risen from the dead, by his Father, those two did it for us, what was required for new life to be given to anyone. He had to go through death first, in fulfillment of Law and prophesy Matt 5:17, then yell to 'it is finished" in John 19:30
Then be risen on that third day to get seen by over 500 witnesses back then for assuredness. The disciples report this, are taught this in Acts for forty days before Pentecost, then Pentecost
The Holy Spirit, Father now lives in and through us all that will not quit belief to this does work of Son for them also

That is correct. And either speech or writing. Prophecy is divine revelation given by divine inspiration, and includes both foretelling and forthtelling. The prophets were primarily in the Old Testament (OT), but all the apostles who wrote were both apostles and prophets. Paul and John were both, Peter to some degree. The OT is called the Law and the Prophets, but Moses himself was a great prophet. Probably the greatest.

I think John was the greatest, the one who told the Messiah was there and Baptized Jesus. which Israel had not had anymore prophets until John the Baptist, three hundred years after the last Prophet from God. yet after the risen Christ as our Lord Messiah, there are no more Old Testament Prophets. Today God comes to live in us each as his personally. Hebrews 1 teaches this to me at least
