Where can I find the names of the 12 disciples in one place? I'm preparing SS lesson for teenage boys.
To make this clearer, make a list:“And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon called Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.”
Luke 6:13-16 KJV
He asked where in the bible one could find a list in one place ....To make this clearer, make a list:
1. Simon Peter
2. Andrew
3. James (the son of Zebedee)
4. John (the son of Zebedee)
5. Philip
6. Bartholomew (Nathanael)
7. Matthew (or Levi the son of Alphaeus)
8. Thomas (Didymus)
9. James (the son of Alphaeus)
10. Judas (the brother of James and son of Alphaeus, as in the KJB).
11. Simon the Zealot or the Canaanite
12. Judas Iscariot
Please note that ALL the modern versions call the first Judas in #10 "the son of James". That is incorrect. How could an apostle have his son along when the apostles were relatively young men, and the son of James would have been a child? John Gill in his commentary makes the correction: "And Judas the brother of James,.... Of that James, that was the son of Alphaeus; though the Syriac and Arabic versions call him "the son of James", very wrongly: this Judas was also called Thaddaeus and Lebbaeus, and is the writer of the epistle that bears his name". Matthew Henry says almost the same thing: He that in Mark was called Thaddeus, in Matthew Lebbeus, whose surname was Thaddeus, is here called Judas the brother of James, the same that wrote the epistle of Jude.
So there were three brothers who were sons of Alphaeus.
Since he is preparing SS lessons for teenage boys, that list must be further clarified. As you can see the modern versions have already made a serious error which must be addressed. He asked where in the bible one could find a list in one place ....
Alright brother.Since he is preparing SS lessons for teenage boys, that list must be further clarified. As you can see the modern versions have already made a serious error which must be addressed.
Indeed, that is incorrect:Please note that ALL the modern versions call the first Judas in #10 "the son of James". That is incorrect.
Why not BROTHER like the KJB? Relative can mean anything including cousin, uncle, nephew, etc. So you simply like to pick on me as though that makes you smart. But in fact it makes you the opposite.James's relative Judas
You simply refuse to admit that your assertion was incorrect. Why not BROTHER like the KJB? Relative can mean anything including cousin, uncle, nephew, etc. So
you simply like to pick on me as though that makes you smart. But in fact it makes you the opposite.
That is insufficient to see the relationship in a translation. So the interpretation of "brother" was necessary to clarify what that meant. And as you can see, all the modern versions copied each other in their false statement that he was the son of James. Even on the surface that is plain stupid. But then the modern versions prefer stupid over wise. The text reads Judas of James and that's good enough for me.
Revelation 21:14 KJVIn truth, only a few of the Apostles names will be found in Scripture. One might remember, Jesus sent out a whole bunch of disciples during His Ministry here on earth. ie: the 70 who went by twos...
(just saying)
The literal translation of Luke 6:16 is "Judas of James." The King James, as well as the other versions, make educated guesses as to what their relationship was. The text reads Judas of James and that's good enough for me.
Revelation 21:14 KJV
[14] And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Yeah was just messing around cause you said apostles lol sorryShould have specified DISCIPLES, huh?![]()
KJV: 16And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.
CJB: 16 Shim`on, the one called the Zealot; Y'hudah Ben-Ya`akov; and Y'hudah from K'riot, who turned traitor.
This is one of the few times the Complete Jewish Bible does not shine more light onto a particular Scripture...huh? Oh well,...
No idea what you're talking about or what your point is.
