when I tell you "I prefer Scripture to Calvin" what makes you think I "want to hear true Calvin or false Calvin" ???
Job 23:12 ... I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
Psalm 119:103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Jeremiah 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
God's Word is food to the new creation within the born again believer.
Here is instruction Paul gave to Timothy concerning the Scriptures:
2 Timothy 3:
14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
To turn from Scripture to read what someone wrote about Scripture is like having someone chew my food for me and then give it to me to eat.
And I'm not saying we shouldn't read books written about Scripture, or we shouldn't go to a good Bible teaching church ... I'm just saying I prefer Scripture to what someone says about Scripture.
And when I read a book about Scripture and go to church, I check out what is written in the book or spoken in the church against what is written in the Book if you catch my drift ...
