Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head: This was a literal anointing of Saul. The word “anoint” means to rub or sprinkle on; apply an ointment or oily liquid to. When Samuel poured it on his head, Saul was anointed with oil.
What happened to Saul’s head and body was a picture of what God did in him spiritually. The Holy Spirit was poured out on him, equipping him for the job of ruling as king over Israel.
Where does it say anywhere God goes against your true desires?
I read where God uses it to make sure you're stuck forever.
Look at Pharaoh. God present him, through Moses, and he starts hardening his heart. God ultimately seals that hardening.

Who said anything about going against your desires? Once God saves a person, He gives them the desires of their heart. God literally replaces our once sinful and selfish desires with those that are holy and God-centered...Psalm 37:4.
Right. He was equipped for a task. He was set apart for service. He was even attended by and experienced spiritual reality to authenticate that this was so.
Not one mention of salvation.

No wonder David would not harm a hair on Saul's head. He was anointed by God! Don't see that this has anything to do with salvation.

I anointed my bagel this morning with a smear of cream cheese for the divine purpose of deliciously alleviating myself of hunger.
God simply appointed Saul as King over his people. And why did he do this? Because the people looked upon the gentile nations who had a king and complained because the thought they needed one as well. This anointing had nothing to do with salvation!
Saul was never referred to as "The man after God's own heart"!
I know of no Reformed author that believes such a thing. Do you? If so, who? And can you quote him?
