Jesus sums up the spiritual intent of the "law" in The Sermon on the Mount. The gospel magnifies the law given at Sinai and through Moses to those weightier matters of the law such as justice, mercy, and truth. And really, it all gets back to love and grace. We obey God's commandments because we love Him, and we love humanity.
God had to be harsh and stern with the Israelites. They had been in bondage for hundreds of years, and all they knew was following the orders of their taskmasters, the Egyptians. The Israelites had no idea how to live in liberty and freedom, and their "stiff-necked" nature on the whole required stern discipline, rules, and regulations. Even then, they couldn't meet the requirements, and we can't either without God's help.
Sin, the transgression of the law, is a serious matter in God's eyes. There was harsh judgement on those under the old covenant who disobeyed, and our sinfulness could only be addressed and resolved ultimately by Jesus and His sacrifice.
You're right, brother--we need the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to live our lives as God intended. We do not have the power on our own to obey God's commandments or taking it to the next level and manifesting the fruits of His nature to live as Jesus did.
“The law and the prophets ( Old Testament ) were
until John:
since that time the kingdom of God is preached, (new testsment ) and every man presseth into it.”
Luke 16:16
The law says
“Ye have heard that
it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
(jesus said the opposite )but
I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”
Matthew 5:38-39 KJV
What Moses in the law commands
“When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that
she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house,
she may go and be another man's wife.”
Deuteronomy 24:1-2
Jesus tesching that
To obey Moses law there would be adultery
“It hath been said, ( in Moses law )
Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: but I say unto you, That
whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.”
Matthew 5:31-32 KJV
do you see how Jesus is actually teaching the contrary spirit from the angel ordaining the law ?
this
“then thou shalt
cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her.”
Deuteronomy 25:12 KJV
a Jesus teaches us to pardon sinners and not exact revenge or chop off limbs
“And
thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”
Deuteronomy 19:21 KJV
jesus teaches us to always give mercy and not take equal revenge like Moses law taught
jesus teaches us to stay committed to marriage not to divorce if we aren’t happy like Moses law taught
I know the verse about magnifying the law and making it honorable , but when you look at what Moses taught in his law. And compare it to what Jesus taught in His Law a
what we find is that Jesus was teaching the opposite , the contrary the reason is the law is for these folk
“knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;”
1 Timothy 1:9-10 KJV
to bring them to this place
“Now we know that
what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.( only a guilty sinner can repent and accept the gospel and they have to know first)
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for
by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
Romans 3:19-20 KJV
That was preached until John because the time had come for fulfillment of the gospel
“The law and the prophets
were until John:
since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
Luke 16:16 KJV
Jesus removed the vail over Moses words
“and not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that
the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished:
but their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away
in the reading of the old testament;
which
vail is done away in Christ. But even unto this day,
when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart.”
2 Corinthians 3:13-15 KJV
There’s no vail on the gospel it’s open and simple and plain
