A group of engineering students from Purdue University reported that its licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Twenty of the group's volunteers assumed the licking challenge-unassisted by machinery-and averaged 252 licks each to the center.

So humans are still more efficient than machines at licking tootsie roll pops. Well... That's something at least.

The enzyme that produces bioluminescence in fireflies, which are neither bugs nor flies but are actually beetles, is called luciferase.
And there is a femme fatale species of firefly that frequents the fireflies' singles bar' happy hour and mimics the flash of males in order to lure them within chomping distance.
I heard of a pack of wolves that sent out a female to lure a dog into striking distance. The pack pounced on and killed the dog.

Nature's out to get us. Otherwise we wouldn't need clothing, houses, weapons or antibiotics.
That's the reason I don't go camping. Nature hasn't forgotten it used to be perfect, and we are the reason it no longer is. It has been trying to get back at us ever since.

Humans have enzymes in their saliva like amylase for example. These work to breakdown carbohydrates like those used in making Tootsie Roll Pops.

Seems like they would have included that in their licking machine. Or anyway, they SHOULD have, if they wanted accurate results.

Oh well. A licking machine is a waste of a good tootsie pop anyway. Machines can't enjoy it. :p
