The bible does not teach that the last resurrection is unto damnation, it is what both Calvins and Arminians assume. The last resurrection is unto judgement.
So do you think the tax collector seeked God after he went home justified, or before?

I'll share with you something I wish someone had shared with me early in my walk with God. I can't tell you I would have welcomed it or abided by it at that time. But I find it increasingly beneficial for me now. Every biblical example and story is revealing truth. But not exhaustively so. Every story isn't designed to teach every doctrine. Rather, they are generally only revealing a singular truth, and often only a particular aspect of that truth. Because this is so, if one isn't careful, one can easily draw conclusions that are never intended.
Sometimes it is easy to spot. No one believes Jesus is advocating for sinful behavior when He commends the unjust steward. He is merely stressing the need for His people to exercise wisdom. In other cases, it's not as obvious, and we can easily ascribe more to passages than scripture is teaching.
To say they were tricked is not quite right either, because Adam was not deceived... only EveI do not say they had a sin nature, they were innocent. But they were tricked.
It is not wholly true to say they had freewill for God said "of that tree thou shalt
not eat." But the fruit of that tree opened a whole new dimension, a new world.
So God's embargo was a curtailment of Adam's will. He had a choice, choice is
not freewill unless we have set the conditions and consequences ourselves.
Adam could live, that was God's will or he could die, dead men have no freewill.
But they were tricked, it was God's embargo that curtailed Adam's freedom of will,

Was Matthew a tax collector? Was Zacchaeus a tax collector? I could have presumed the man who was juxtaposed to the Pharisee. Your question didn't give enough information for me to be sure.
And you are free to learn from my experience or dispense with it as you choose. And I never suggested not sticking with the full counsel of scripture. I merely shared concerning how we form our doctrine from individual passages.
