But instead of judgement the Gibeonites plea for and obtain a covenant of peace. Which Joshua confirms. They are given mercy. They seek a covenant KNOWING that Jesus is good and righteous and just.

they have very difficult choices to make and their path is very complex.
they are the chosen nation of God.
