Nothing for me to be careful about here and the answer is NO because this is not authentic faith but an empty profession of faith/dead faith. SAY he hath faith is the key word in verse 14.
In James 2:19, we read that the demons believe "mental assent" that "there is one God," but they do not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ (Acts 16:31) and are not saved.
Those that believe in Him are not as worried about working as much as knowing that He has worked, is working, and will work in them.

Good works accompany Salvation by grace through faith. But those good works are not the means of attaining Salvation or retaining it. They are the work of the Holy Spirit inside true believers.
The Spirit can be grieved by a believer's behavior when one becomes unfruitful. The believer is disciplined and in some cases even removed but is not condemned.
We all go through very difficult periods in life that test our faith. We do not always respond appropriately, even on a daily basis. But He is still at work in us and we learn when we are willing.
We are growing in grace and the knowledge of Him. We still have sin but true believers confess their sin and are forgiven. We are still admonished and encouraged to prove our own Salvation and make our election sure by doing what is right as best we can as we learn.
None of us reach sinless perfection in this life. We are objects of His grace and mercy who look for our redemption to come in and through His Son.

You don't get to decide what is authentic faith.
And the scriptures don’t say anything about the faith being spoken of as not authentic.
Do you have faith? If you tell me yes then you have just professed you have faith, just as in verse 14

I'm quoting James and he clearly said SAYS/CLAIMS to have faith in verse 14 which proves my point. That is not genuine faith but a bare profession of faith.
James is discussing the evidence of faith (says-claims to have faith but has no works/I will show you my faith by my works - James 2:14-18) and not the initial act of being accounted as righteous with God. (Romans 4:2-3)
And? The demons believe who Jesus is but they do not believe in/have faith in Jesus for salvation.
I say I have faith…. Please tell me how you would determine if my faith is authentic.
People desire all kinds of wicked things. God does not give them those desires.

Satan and demons believe the word of God.
There is no salvation for them though Jesus, they have already been judged, thus there is no point in believing in salvation through Jesus. Yet they still believe.

Indeed, desires of the heart. Who knows the hearts of men? Within the same, who can claim a man’s faith not authentic?
If we are going to start deeming a persons faith not authentic by what we believe we know, where does it end….
Jonah disobeyed and tried to hide
sound like non authentic faith to me.
David counted the men after being told not to.
Peter denied knowing Christ, that has to be non authentic faith… Who amongst us is willing to say Peters faith is not authentic? I would suspect that person can walk on water.
