What does it mean that we who are in Christ have been released from the Law? What is the meaning of the sentence? And what is it's meaning for us?

Romans 7:1-6 NASB20 - Or do you not know, brothers [and sisters] (for I am speaking to those who know the Law), that the Law has jurisdiction over a person as long as he lives? For the married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he is alive; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is alive she gives herself to another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress if she gives herself to another man. Therefore, my brothers [and sisters,] you also were put to death in regard to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might belong to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were [brought to light] by the Law, were at work in the parts of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

How have we died to that by which we were bound? What were we bound to and what have we died to?

Paul is speaking to the Jewish Christians who were having a hard time letting go of how they worshiped God for over a thousand years. I suggest that is what the first 11 chapters are dealing with. Jews were bound to the law but Gentiles were not. Paul tells them in the previous chapter that if they died with Christ, in baptism, then they will live with Him (no longer bound).

Paul is speKing to the Gentiles and Jews and us today.
We have been freed/released from the law that bound us. But notice that Paul said "so that we serve in newness of spirit..."

We are freed from the condemnation of the law. So we are not called sinners and condemned to eternal death. The law can't condemn us because Jesus paid the price in full. But we are told to serve (do what is right, defined by the law) in newness of spirit.

Just because we are forgiven for sinning doesn't mean we should continue to sin.

The law still defines what is right and wrong. Filled with the Spirit we want to obey the law. All glory to God.

Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Rom 8: 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Jesus died without sinning so He can free us from the death that sin ( the transgression of the law) results in.
Eze 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die.
*If the law is gone...removed...no longer revealing what sin is...
*We are not sinning
*Which means we don't need a saviour from sin.
Rom 7:6-14
6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter. 7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. 12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

Does that mean that after I'm baptised, I can steal your car, commit adultery, and the law no longer means anything.

If we confess our sins and repent.....this means the law still stands.... we can be freed by faith in Jesus.
By faith the law can not condemn me but by faith I want to obey the law of liberty.

Rom 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Rom 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

How have we died to that by which we were bound? What were we bound to and what have we died to?
(Romans 7:1-6) "Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? {2} For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. {3} So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. {4} Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. {5} For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. {6} But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter."

The Old testament LAW was made up of two parts.. The actual laws and then the punishments ascribed to each Law.. So the OT Laws two parts where integral to the OT Law.. Jesus by providing Atonement for transgressors of the Law ( That's everyone ) has made the OT law no longer over us, in that we shall not be stoned to death if caught in adultery.. or any of the other punishments prescribed in the OT Law.. And we shall not face the curse, The second death in the eternal lake of fire because we have failed to do the Law.. For the curse of the law is the punishment ascribed to it..

Deuteronomy 27:
26 "Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen."

This does not mean that it is ok to murder or steal or commit adultery.. Those laws still reveal the will of God and are linked to The LORDs laws to Love God and to Love our neighbors.. But again even if we as faulty human beings fall down and break these laws we are still covered by the Atoning Blood of the LORD Jesus..

I am caught between two things on this. First though I know that I am not bound to the Law.

Okay.

So, there is the idea that God is not wanting the wicked to perish or die in their sin, even if there is a death penalty ascribed to what they have done, but that they should repent and turn to righteousness and live.

The other idea is that even if a person turns to God and Jesus for salvation, they yet shall be punished with the death penalty for their capital crime or offence.

What is the Law that you believe we are to obey?
The moral law of love.
Love God with all your heart.
Which is greatly described in the first 4 of the 10 commandments.
Love your neighbour as yourself.
Which is the last 6 of the 10 commandments. Even then it is about the heart and motives which God knows.

The laws that I believe we don't need to keep are those that are a shadow of Jesus, and which Jesus fulfilled when He came and died. And the civil and social laws that apply to the nation, government of that day.

God's moral laws don't change.

If we are FREE in Jesus, we may suffer in this world and be persecuted. But we can have peace and know that we have eternal life.

1Jn 3:1-4
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Are we free from sin or free from the law and are we bound to the law or supposed to obey it?

I can see the logic.
If we love God it results in respecting and loving our Parents..
And by learning to love our parents we learn to love God as the Almighty God..

We should always made God first. And love God above everyone else.

Are we free from sin or free from the law and are we bound to the law or supposed to obey it?

There is a new covenant for Israel.
There is an everlasting covenant that hasn't changed. Adam and Eve were told that God would save them. Abraham understood that God would save him and Jesus ratified that promise with His blood.

If we are not in Jesus we are not free in any way. No Jesus = no power to overcome sin and no forgiveness from sin.

To be Justified by faith = to be freed from the guild of all sin. Imputed rightousness.
Christ's righteousness covering us.
Free from the guilt of the law and the penalty of the law.

To be sanctified by faith = to be free from the sin we once were slaves to.
Imparted righteousness is the righteousness of Jesus in our hearts changing us and causing us to like Him. We become free from the sins that once controlled us.

By faith in Jesus we are freed from the penalty of sin and the sins...

Sin is the transgression of the law.
If we are not sinning we must be obeying the law. No middle ground.

I understand that I am to be married to Jesus and not to the law any longer if I ever have been.

What is imputed righteousness?

I know that sin is transgression of the law or that sin is lawlessness.

I know that I understand about Jesus.

Why do you say, "If we are not sinning we must be obeying the law."?

Gentiles were not bound to the Law, but we were bound to sin.
I know that Gentiles know of God by creation and conscience, knowing the difference between right and wrong.

Romans 2:15 NASB20 - in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience testifying and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,

In this world under the authorities on earth a offender may indeed face the death penalty or face other penalties like big fines or prison sentences.. But all those penalties are as nothing compared to the eternal penalty of being cast into the eternal Lake of Fire.. That's what Jesus saves us from.. That eternal lake of fire.. So yeah if i end up murdering someone and i am executed, so be it.. I do not believe or think that Jesus should save me from the judgement of the worldly authorities.. I do however believe and think Jesus will save me from that eternal lake of fire.. That i will have eternity with Jesus as a perfected being in His perfect eternal existence..
