Did they repent because speaking in tongues or because of Peters speach of the gospel?
I would say ot has mothing to do with speaking in tongues, if you read the text.
Why would they need to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus if they where allready saved

It quite common to see dissociation of the spirit.

If the gift of tounges is not for communicating with each other why is one person needed to speak it and another needed to interpret.

Isn't the gift of tounges to shock unbelievers into repentance,

How do the unbelievers become shocked if there's no telepathic communication involved
Where do you get this stuff?

Did you even read 1cor chapters 12-14?

1cor 12:1-3

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that[a] you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb[b] idols, however, you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus [c]accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

Whether you like it or not, this is the foundation of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit That one must build upon going forward in the text.

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.

Therefore I make known to you:

1. no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed,
2. no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

After this word by Paul from the Holy Spirit, Pual then goes into the Gifts. FYI IF you don't do 1 or 2, you do not move into any of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Paul then says :

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

What do we see about the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

1. Diversities of gifts
2. Differences of Ministries
3. Diversities of Activities
4 Manifestations of the Spirit

Did Paul give them? Did the Apostles give them? NO!

1. The Spirit
2. The Lord
3. God the Father,

The Gifts come from the Holy Spirit, but there are also the gifts of Christ found in Eph 4:11 That are also listed in chapter 12 of 1Corinthans FYI, you talk about adding things to scripture, "teacher" was added; it was originally Prophets, (a)postles, evangelist, and Pastors. Pastor= Teacher also.

After Paul establishes who the gifts came from and how one can be known from dumb idol worship and a move of God, Paul addresses what the gifts will do and who there are for within the unified Body at Corinth and where ever the church is.

12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For, in fact, the body is not one member but many.

The body :

1. many members but one body
2. One Spirit we were all baptized into One body

There are indeed many members. Yet all members of the Body are needed. So the body is without any kind of schism. Once this is understood, Paul then goes into the appointment of the gifts in the body and what they are for and do.

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

28 And God has appointed these in the church:
  • first apostles,
  • second prophets,
  • third teachers,
  • after that
  • miracles,
  • then gifts of healing,
  • helps,
  • administrations,
  • varieties of tongues.
Who appointed these in the church? GOD.

  • varieties of tongues.
Who appointed these in the church? GOD.

Then Paul explains Maturity in the gifts and appointments :

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

What are the best gifts? Plural, not singular.

The best gifts are the ones listed above that are NEEDED to do the work of the Lord at the time you need them.

That is the most excellent way to use them.

Example:
If someone in the body needs healing Discerning of spirits may not be the best gift to be asking for in that situation. Maybe ask the Lord for the gift of Healing. I'm sure speaking in tongues was not the gift needed at that time.

Person(s) who think the text suggests speaking in tongues and interpretation or healing is not the best gift are reading into the text out of a bias.

Now this might be a shock to some, But the context of 1cor 12 doesn't end here, and chapters 13 and 14 are unit chapters with 12.

So if you did not know, Paul did not write in chapters and verses. Those were added later for easier reading.

YOU must continue the text in context with chapter 13, which opens with :

1.Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

Paul admonishes the church of Corinth and explaining the operation of all Gifts must be done in Love and must be the motivation of the gift to begin with.

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.

The context of chapter 13 is LOVE and using gifts for reasons other than love or having love as the motivating factor. IT profits you Nothing!

4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

What is the meaning Paul is conveying?

Love does and doesn't do :

Love does :
  • Long-suffering
  • Kind
  • Rejoices in truth
  • Bears all things
  • Believes all things
  • Hopes all things
  • Endures all things
  • LOVE Never fails
Love doesn't:
  • does not envy
  • does not parade itself
  • not puffed up
  • Does not behave rudely
  • Does not seek its own
  • Does not provoke
  • think evil
  • does not rejoice in iniquity

Paul then returns to the teaching of Maturity :

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child;

but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Nowhere in the scriptures is the gifts of the Holy Spirit called childish things.

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face.

We cannot fully know all things, but what we can know and see are:

Faith
Hope
Love

Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

My Cessationist types would have you believe this is all there is to say about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. and nothing more after verses 8-10 of chapter 13.

The context of gifts of the Holy Spirit must be seen in all scripture contextually. And chapter 14 of 1Corthians is very much important.

Chapter 14:

Pursue( to seek after eagerly, earnestly endeavour to acquire) love, and desire (to burn with zeal in the Greek )
Spiritual gifts,

but especially that you may prophesy.

2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God,

for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

5 I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied;

for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Greater means More effective Unless there is an interpretation.

Prophesying and tongues & interpretation both are able to edify the body. According to 1cor chapter 14: 5

Paul then teaches more on Maturity and operates in the church setting of these two gifts Prophesying and tongues and interpretation of tongues.

6 But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

7 Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played?

8 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?

9 So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken?

For you will be speaking into the air.

10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance.

11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language,

I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.

12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

Paul said if I come to you speaking in tongues what shall it profit you?

UNLESS I SPEAK TO YOU EITHER BY REVELATION, KNOWLEDGE, Prophsying or by Teaching

No sound or language spoken, just like a flute or harp or trumpet, is good unless there is understanding.

That is why interpretation is needed. In one's desire to seek The gifts of the Holy Spirit, it must be done for the right reasons.

1. the betterment of others, the body, the church, and self.

13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

Your desires to speak in tongues in the church setting? You must pray that you interpret also.

14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15 What is the conclusion then?

I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.

I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say?

17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are not about you; they are about the body and edification of all.

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;
19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

21 In the law it is written:

“With men of other tongues and other lips
I will speak to this people;
And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,”
says the Lord.

22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers;

but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are [f]out of your mind?

24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all.

25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

25 And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

Paul teaches more about the operation and maturity of the Gift of Tongues and Prophesying :

26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation.
Let all things be done for edification.

27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.

30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent.

31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

Operate the gifts properly and judge by the word of God what is being said.

"And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets."

If you did not know prophets speak the word of God, and therefore going forward, we judge what is said by the word of God.

Paul's further teaching to these saints and closing of the text.

34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

36 Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached?

37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.
40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

There is nothing in the whole Bible that says or suggests the gifts were not got today or gone away when the last Apostle died.

The only thing that hurt the operation of the gifts to not be seen down through the church age other than Historically documented moves and utterances and work of the Holy Spirit are:

1. saying Jesus is a curse
2. One who is not saved
3. immaturity
4. self-desiring or ungodly reasons to use them
5. No love as the motivation for using them
6. Not judging what is said by the word of God
7. no order or discipline when operating the Gifts.

I know this is a long one, but it is what is needed to be said by the Word of God.

Did they repent because speaking in tongues or because of Peters speach of the gospel?
I would say ot has mothing to do with speaking in tongues, if you read the text.
The text indicates that the "tongues" were the "Attention getters" - a "trumpet sound, as it were. Then Pete preached to the Crown, the Holy Spirit convicted the crowd of SIN and of Judgement, and gave the increase.

Everything worked together according to God's plan for the occasion.

Paul says what he WRITES is a COMMAND from GOD and 1 of those COMMANDS is: and do not forbid speaking in tongues
Not sure I’d classify that as a commend; Paul admonishes the church in Corinth not to forbid the speaking of languages at a public worship and, although he does lay down some ground rules as to how it should happen, he does not outright forbid people to worship in a language no one else at the gathering may speak/understand. One of the purposes of Pentecost was to make the God for the Jews accessible to all people and dispense with having to do so via a specific sacerdotal language.

People who are not born again cannot speak in tongues.
Anyone can learn to produce glossolalia in relatively short order - for most it's a matter of overcoming inhibitions about playing with the sounds of your language.

Maybe so, but people who are not born again cannot speak in tongues.

Why did Paul write what he did in 1 Cor 14? Why did he say he would rather speak five words with his understanding so he could teach people than 10,000 words in a tongue? Why did he say that speaking in tongues in public without interpreting is like speaking into the air?
The answer's in 1 Cor 14 - if you speak in a tongue that's NOT UNDERSTOOD, it doesn't mean SPIT.

[quote} The Bible says that when a person speaks in tongues in public, they must interpret. Why?[/QUOTE]

The Bible Doesn't say that. what it says is: If you speak in tongues in a meeting context, the the tongue should be interpreted either by the speaker, or by somebody else.

OBVIOUSLY if nobody understands the "tongue" (which was apparently the Corinthian case), then the gift of "Interpretation of tongues" is necessary to know what the message is.

Simple common sense.

Personal opinion: The Corinthians were apparently a raucous bunch, and people were "Showing off" with their "Prayer language", and not speaking in tongues because the Holy Spirit burdened them to, but just because they wanted attention (My tongue is better than yours!!!).

HOWEVER, in fact, WHEN the Holy Spirit burdens a person to speak in tongues in a meeting, He's already lined up an interpreter, to make the message known. SO when the Holy Spirit wants you to speak in a tongue in a meeting, you don't have to be concerned about an interpreter. It's already arranged.

Anyone can learn to produce glossolalia in relatively short order - for most it's a matter of overcoming inhibitions about playing with the sounds of your language.
Agreed!!! Phony tongues can be faked with a little practice. UNFORTUNATELY, some Pentecostal preachers suggest that people should "prime the pump", by making random sounds, or talking baby talk "to get it started". "Oneness Pentecostals" teach the heresy, that "if you ain't got tongues, you ain't saved at all". So getting their victims to "speak in tongues" acceptably is high on their "to do" list. If they're PHONY, no problem.

The answer's in 1 Cor 14 - if you speak in a tongue that's NOT UNDERSTOOD, it doesn't mean SPIT.
All tongues (speaking in tongues) are not understood. When a person speaks in tongues he does not understand what he is saying (1 Cor 14:2). Since generally speaking, people who meet together in church all speak the same language, nobody else will understand either, which is why tongues, when spoken aloud in public, must be interpreted.

The Bible says that when a person speaks in tongues in public, they must interpret. Why?

No, the person who speaks in tongues is to be the one to interpret (1 Cor 14:5, 13).

OBVIOUSLY if nobody understands the "tongue" (which was apparently the Corinthian case), then the gift of "Interpretation of tongues" is necessary to know what the message is.
Nearly always, nobody will understand, which is why in public, interpretation is necessary.

Simple common sense.

Again, the person who speaks in tongues is to be the one who interprets.

Phony tongues can be faked
If someone is faking phony tongues, are they doing it right? How does a person fake something that’s phony? :)

How do you know if a person‘s speaking in tongues is legit or not? Get the opinion of a professional linguist like kavik?

All tongues (speaking in tongues) are not understood.
FALSE!!! Sometime the tongues are understood often with even the correct regional accent.

When a person speaks in tongues he does not understand what he is saying (1 Cor 14:2).
True statement

Since generally speaking, people who meet together in church all speak the same language, nobody else will understand either, which is why tongues, when spoken aloud in public, must be interpreted.
Also true - just common sense.

No, the person who speaks in tongues is to be the one to interpret (1 Cor 14:5, 13).
FALSE!! The tongues speaker May also interpret, but the Holy SPirit generally selects someone else to do that. I've been burdened many times to interpret someone else's tongues.

Nearly always, nobody will understand, which is why in public, interpretation is necessary.
True statement

Again, the person who speaks in tongues is to be the one who interprets.
Doesn't matter how many time you repeat an error. It's still a FALSE TEACHING, and your cites don't back up your claim.

Part 3 ending
Thanks for explaining all this.

Your first response sounds like you've got a bee in your your bonet.

I can't think why, but maybe you've heard the same argument I've proposed from a cessationist.

Funny thing tho I'm not one.

The Gift of tounges is a Gift from the holy spirit for Christians now.
But it's safe to say with this Gift you don't possess it.
Who can speak by the gift of tounges unless by the spirit.

And yes it says its for edification, and yes its A direct communication between a believer and God.

But I think you forget when your speaking to the father then the edification you hear might not just be about encouragement, as in a way of all loving and full of compassion in the way the holy spirit would speak to you.

When the father speaks to you direct, then you need to listen, because under normal circumstances you would only speak to the holy spirit.

Speaking in tounges was also something the father did when he spoke to his people in the old testament,

Let's see you answer this,

Are we still his people.

And are we going to dismiss acts 2 completely.

Seems to me When tounges are spoken repentance follows or an act of putting something right to.

Is edification just about encouragement or is it also about correcting

My view the gift of tounges is the father speaking himself.

I don't know what yours is.

Whether or not there's an Interpretation following is a clue.

I recall an instance in Marion Ohio at an FGBMFI meeting some years ago:
A man got up and spoke in tongues. The fellow on my immediate left stood and began the interpretation. while he was speaking I was burdened to interpret. then he stopped in mid message, and I immediately took over from where he'd stopped, and spoke what the Holy Spirit gave me for about 35-40 seconds or so, and then the flow of words stopped, so I did too. Immediately, the fellow on my right stood, and continued from where I'd stopped, and finished the message.

OBVIOUSLY the Holy Spirit WILL NOT "interpret" something that He didn't say.

Your next comment will probably be "How do I know the Interpretation is "real". Since it's essentially "Prophesy", then "the others" should judge according to 1 Cor 14:29.

SImple as that.

Not sure I’d classify that as a commend; Paul admonishes the church in Corinth not to forbid the speaking of languages at a public worship and, although he does lay down some ground rules as to how it should happen, he does not outright forbid people to worship in a language no one else at the gathering may speak/understand. One of the purposes of Pentecost was to make the God for the Jews accessible to all people and dispense with having to do so via a specific sacerdotal language.
he says it is to be accepted as a Command from the Lord, that seems clearly written.

in the late 70's early 80's we traveled from 30 miles east of Ft. Wayne, In to a revival being held in Marion, Oh. as a kid, that was a long drive.
