I thought it might be educational if people would share some New Age practices they've encountered in church. I have some of my own but I'll give others a chance to respond first. Where are all these New Age teachings and practices coming from, and why do people accept them so easily?
I was a New Ager 20 years ago. I was thinking I could get energy from rocks, trees, nature. Get it by meditation to be 'one' with them.
It's very very subjective. I didn't know what I was opening myself to.
Of course it feels good getting into nature and breathing in fresh air, but there is no foundation of truth.
One guru says one thing..another something else ... Another something else.. they often actually contradict eachother.
They are meant to be the source of 'spiritual wisdom'.
Now where does it affect the local church?
1.. taking individual interpretation of scripture and that becomes an 'own truth '... Even though it could be completely out of context. That isn't letting scripture speak for itself.
2... Elevating subjective experience over objective truth.. so when praying some may get hyped up or super relaxed.. and think that feeling is the Holy Spirit.. but it could be just emotions. Feelings come out of solid faith.. but not solid faith out of feelings .
3.. self edification, self empowerment, self enhancement, self help.. this is the main area I think where it would come in.
Christianity is about self denial and humbleness, not pumping your ego up.
New Age would be full of self pride. That's not Christianity.
