Could You Spend 3 Years on a Cruise Ship?

I think sea sickness is a rare thing for a few individuals, I don't think I would get sea sick because I have been on a ferry boat and cruise tour boat I've never been sick on a boat, I don't get sick on a plan or in a car or on a bus or on a train.

Two summers ago I went deep sea fishing off the coast in Orange Beach AL with about 40 people on a charter boat. I took Dramamine to combat seasickness but what do you know, still got seasick. Lol. Only one other guy and I ended up losing our breakfasts, and his trip was almost ruined. But I wasn't too miserable and after the last time I felt almost normal. I'd still go again!

It just happened that I got to go cuz it was a company trip for the company my brother and some friends work and my friend invited me. It was really fun and I'm glad I got to go. We mostly fished for red snapper. Honestly I didn't fish much lol.

I think if you gifted this to someone who really was interested and couldnt afford it they would love it and they would think they were 'the king of the world'

But only two restaurants and a cafe. hmm
And the casino has been replaced by a 'business center' . I am not sure about the golf stimulator or simulator. Do I really want to pretend I can play golf at sea?

Where is the spa and massage pampering salon? The underwater aquarium? The karaoke booths? Also, it does not mention how many lifeboats are available in case you do want to abandon ship or mutiny. It does say they have xray machines, a defibrillator AND a dentist. Also you could have your plastic surgeries done on board.

It sounds like they want to target retired male execs that want to have cosmetic surgery when. they are not sightseeing UNESCO sites.

I'd be worried about poor Wi-Fi and seasickness. Otherwise, I suppose I could do it. If $30,000 per year really included basically everything, it wouldn't even be unreasonably expensive.

If you have children dont forget the babysitters. Ive read an accountof a couple who took their two children on a round the world sailing adventure, they were aged 9-14 I think it was five years they spent away, and they were doing lessons out of books but sometimes would join schools on the islands they visited. The dad did radio spots for the BBC.

I think this would be quite different but imagine if a class did this for their history or social science lesson and got to visit places all around the world. For 3 years.

I mean apart from the amenities on board the main reason is to visit all those places right? Who really gets to do that in their lifetime. Though it may not seem you anchor at any one place for long, thats the only thing.

Theoretically, this is supposed to include (this is directly copied from the article):

"Pricing, which includes all meals, drinks (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic), laundry, Wi-Fi, gratuities, housekeeping, and port fees, starts at $90,000 and go up to $330,000 based on accommodations. There isn’t the option to do shorter legs; however, it is possible to go in on one room with family and friends and divvy up the costs with who is on the boat at any given time. The company is also offering a matchmaking scheme, where passengers co-own a cabin with another group and split time on board."

I was talking with my small chat group about whether or not they would be interested in something like this and if they think they could last that long on a ship. I know that I for one would go stir crazy being confined to one place. My daily life might be boring, but we have a dozen grocery stores around here so I can at least mix up my regular chores!

However, even though $30,000 is an awful lot of money, I've lived in or near cities where the cost of living is even higher, so seeing as this is supposed to include meals, laundry, and port fees, some might consider it a bargain -- especially since you can split the costs with others in one cabin.

It will be multiple choice with visible answers, with some of the options saying the same thing in different ways, but let's just swim with it and have some fun!

no with 90K you could easily pay for a decent funeral and still live on the rest. you could then put the rest into savings, RRSPs, GICs and other investments for your family once your gone and increase your finances in the process.

I've really enjoyed readings people's responses to this thread, and most importantly, the differently reasonings behind them.

I have to admit, my first reaction would be similar to Canadian's as far as choosing the most practical answer. If I only had 3 years to live, I'd definitely want to make sure any expenses would be taken care of so I wouldn't be a burden to my family. However, my more adventurous side would definitely want to adopt Sculpt's answer, most especially if I could somehow go with a friend.

But I also wonder, if I had everything settled and taken care of in advance (funeral arrangements, etc.,) would God possibly direct me (or someone else) to go?

I had a time in my life where for several years, I had to travel once or twice a year to see family. One of the most important things I learned on those trips is that sometimes I wasn't taking them just for myself, but for the people I was visiting or meeting along the way.

For example, on a visit to my family's church, I wound up talking to a girl there for over 2 hours regarding her life and challenges as a Christian. Even though we didn't keep in touch (she was married and had a lot to keep track of,) I knew that part of the purpose for that trip was that one conversation with her.

I was raised to think of things in a very frugal and practical frame of mind, so that's what I tend to gravitate toward by default. But every now and then, God has led me to instances in which I didn't really want to spend the money, but it wound up being for the benefit of someone else.

It's interesting to me that God might actually lead someone to go on a trip like this for the ultimate purpose of encountering someone they might meet, help, or lead to salvation along the way.

It might even be that the staff just needs someone who is polite and friendly to them rather than entitled and always complaining. I've had many instances in which I knew, but not until afterwards, that God had led me into certain situations in which I was there specifically for the staff, whether to offer an encouraging word, or to write a letter to their boss on their behalf.

Shes coming over in the school holidays. I dont know if my boss knows but she had a pretty poor impression of the way shes trying to 'manage' me with all thats going on at work lately. I dont really need to be managed by some else. I have a Masters degree, so not sure why some workplaces keep treating me like their slave.

Have you ever read Around the world in 80 days by Jules Verne. Also 20,000 leagues under the sea. I love travel and adventure books like that and things like Michael Palin Pole to Pole and Michael Portillo going on railways, or Anthony Bourdain visiting every eatery, and other presenters doing it for tv to show the armchair peeps at home what the world is like though I can imagine its a LOT of work behind the scenes fixing all that travel to be able to film everything.

If the cruise ship is as huge as it seems to be in the picture it might only be able to visit the most populated ports though. Imagine the same journey for three years but by airplane. You'll get to see a lot of airports. Some people just go to the airport for their holiday and have a good time there. Like the Kath and Kim episode, or Tom Hanks in the Terminal.
