God's holiness and righteousness cannot just overlook sin. I've spent time in a clean room where pharmaceuticals were made. I had to wear head to toe disposable garments to get in. The room was flooded with formaldehyde before any processes were performed. Not even a bacteria could survive.

If human "clean" is so severe, how much more clean is heaven. We need more than forgiveness. We need to be clean. Jesus shed His perfectly clean blood that was without sin. His death paid the price of sin, His blood cleanses sin as if it never happened.

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for your souls upon the altar; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul." Leviticus 17:11 When Jesus shed His blood, His life was poured out also.

If Jesus had committed even one sin. He would not have qualified as the sacrifice for the sin of mankind.

If you want to know how much God hates sin, look at what Jesus endured. If you want to know how much God loves you, the sinner, look at what Jesus endured - for you.

The answer is that God forgives sin based on an acceptable payment being made for sins.

Sin is often likened to debt. When a debt is paid in full, there exists nothing to collect any longer. On the cross Jesus paid our sin debt. God can forgive us because there no longer remains a balance due.

It‘s a mystery. Be thankful that it happened. Jesus Christ is the best thing that happened to humanity and Creation.
