Jesus gave His apostles/disciples, His Church a number of great commissions such as spreading His Gospel and baptizing all nations.
I am reading John Cha 20 and am puzzled??????????
This reading occurs after Jesus has arisen and appears to his disciples/apostles/church.
Verse 23: 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Was this another commission which Jesus gave His Church?
How come we don't hear these verses preached in our churches?
remember this when God breathed life into man ?
“And the LORD
God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Genesis 2:7 KJV
it’s Jesus fulfilling a figure he does it many times in the gospel
like this figure
“And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai,
two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.”
Exodus 31:18 KJV
this fulfillment
“Now
Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but
what sayest thou?
This they said,
tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But
Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them,
He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
And again
he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And
they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.”
John 8:5-9 KJV
you see how Moses word was to kill her and Jesus word saved her from condemnation of Moses law which demanded her death for adultery
“And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”
Leviticus 20:10
Jesus stopped them from obeying Moses law
the figures are throughout the gospel it’s subtle ways for Jesus to say “ I’m Your God I have come “ subtly so those who we heard scripture would recognize and accept him which many didn’t
“He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
John 1:10-11
Some other examples the figure
“And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel,
I AM hath sent me unto you.”
Exodus 3:14 KJV
the revelation
“Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was,
I am.”
John 8:58 KJV
The prophetic figure
“Therefore
my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that
I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.”
Isaiah 52:6 KJV
the fulfillment
“They answered him,
Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them,
I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.”
John 18:5-6 KJV
Really the whole gospel is this way even things like this the figure
“And
Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that
if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.”
Numbers 21:9 KJV
the fulfillment
“And
as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal
life.”
John 3:14-15 KJV
the figure
“Then said the LORD unto
Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day,
that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.”
Exodus 16:4
the fulfillment
“Then Jesus said unto them,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but
my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For
the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. And Jesus said unto them,
I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
John 6:32-33, 35 KJV
when we’re reading the Old Testament it’s like we’re seeing Jesus through a dark veil in figures and shadows
Even genesis is considered Moses law because he wrote the first five books of the Bible so what I’m saying is that’s just a figure of Jesus telling people who had known the scriptures this is the new beginning for mankind God had king promised a new creation of man
mans beginning
“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Genesis 2:7
Mans new beginning
“And when he had said this,
he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:”
John 20:22
it’s a figure of a new creation of a person a new beginning without sin
“Therefore
if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17
