Equity is just a lame excuse
I have had it with all the lame excuses. When I was a teacher we were judged based on our test results. Every teacher would blame their test results on the kids. I thought that was repulsive, and studies had already been done that showed the difference between high performing classes and low performing classes was not the kids, it was the teacher.
They would say our kids were poor (they look at demographics in NYC and our school was in the bottom 25% of income) because most were on a free lunch program. My feeling was that was an advantage, kids come to school everyday because they get fed.
They would say the kids were lazy. I remembered myself and my friends and we were lazy in HS. I knew I was extremely lazy and yet I was considered the hardest working student they had ever seen at my HS of 2,000 kids (this was because I never took home a book, I did all my work Mon-Fri between 7:30am and 3pm).
They would say that being on free lunch meant the kids weren't fed as well. True, but I went to school in a wealthy suburb where kids would spend two weeks on the French Riviera, or at Vale, or at Disney world. No one studies at those places. These rich kids are filled with distractions.
Step 1 you have to look at the results as your fault. Can't some of it be some kids fault who failed to study? Of course, but that is true in every class in the US. It all evens out.
Step 2 After careful reflection, modify what you are doing.
My first year my kids scored in the bottom 25% of the test results in NYC, a place where the bottom 25% is horrible. To be fair the school was in the bottom 25%.
The last year I have data for they scored in the top 6%. They were competitive with schools ranked among the top 100 high schools in the US.
Every year you make adjustments, you study the research on teaching, and you don't take these lame excuses. Other teachers would come to me preparing to their reports for tenure application because I had the data for the whole city, and then they would want to "massage" the data, let's just compare their results with other poor schools that are most black and latino. That is so racist. That is what equity is all about, an excuse for poor performance.
