Two flight attendants are flying on a small plane. They look out the window and see what appears to be fuel leaking from one of the wings. Both of them begin handing out parachutes. One flight attendant, not wanting to alarm the passengers, says to each one, "Put this on because it will greatly improve your flight". Some are skeptical, but reluctantly agree to put one on while others flatly refuse. Soon, the willing passengers discover they are very uncomfortable, the others who refused are now mocking them, and the promise of an improved flight was false. They angrily take them off and cast them aside, determining not to fall for such obvious lies again.
The other flight attendant, however, says to the passengers as she hands out parachutes, "at any moment the plane may run out of fuel and only this parachute can save your life." Many refuse, reasoning that a flight attendant doesn't know squat about airplanes, but some wisely choose to believe her and gladly accept the offer. As they sit uncomfortably, the others begin mocking them as well, even those who had previously accepted a parachute but chose to discard it. However, despite the mocking they are thankful for the gracious gift given to them and patiently endure the discomfort and abuse. After a time, the plane indeed runs out of fuel and begins to dive toward the ground. As the wise passengers parachute down from the doomed plane to safety, those who refused to put on a parachute now scream in terror as they fearfully plunge toward certain death.
Around the turn of the 20th century, the presentation of the Gospel began to change. For centuries, the Gospel was presented with urgency and power in an attempt to compel sinners to repent from breaking the commandments of God and accept Jesus' as both their Savior from sin and their Lord to be obeyed, lest they be found guilty of sin and cast into the Lake of Fire. However, as the church began to place less and less emphasis on obedience to God's commandments, a new kind of Gospel presentation had to be found. And what became the primary reason for why a person should accept Christ? "Life Enhancement"...that having God in one's life will make everything alright. Through the years, this wishy-washy, milquetoast method of Gospel evangelism has done more harm than good. The result is half-hearted converts with faith not firmly rooted in the Word of God, "loaves and fishes" type Christians who are in church for what they can get out of it rather than for what they can do for Jesus, and even those whose religion revolves around "needs fulfillment" where they identify a need, fulfill that need, and then congratulate themselves for a job well done...and the message of the Gospel is completely lost.

The Gospel in not about "Life enhancement" - the truth is that "all that choose to live Godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution". What the Gospel does provide is the power to "endure to the end" that we "shall be saved". Endure what? If the church would truly embrace the message of the Gospel and what it truly means to "believe on Him" - to "obey His every word" - they would soon discover the answer: that what we must endure is the wrath of our satanic enemy who hates with intense hatred those who make a break from obeying him and choose instead to love and obey God. The church needs to return to the old fashioned, Gospel presentation which says, "For God so loved the world that HE GAVE His only begotten Son that whosoever BELIEVETH ON HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH but have eternal life."

The simple fact is, alot of people believe they can get saved last minute, so they don't see the need to live Godly lives until the end. They don"t have that immediate fear. I think this may caused by "faith alone" belief which gained popularity starting in the 1500s, and maybe even by OSAS belief.

Some people think they are saved as soon as they say the salvation prayer. In an attempt to convert the masses, evangelicals have made salvation seem easy. Maybe it is that easy, I am not commenting on that.

I was Evangelical for 33 years and found parts of it quite troubling. It got worse the more I studied the Bible. One person even told me to stop reading the Bible and I would be less troubled. Turning to secular counseling was a huge mistake and I trusted them enough to take the drugs they prescribed. I think I took them for about 10 years. My life was in ruins. My 38 year marriage was gone. The family and friends did not talk to me. I've been off the Drugs for more than that now and there is no way to restore my life.
I am leaving a lot of detail out, and won't speak of it. Micah 6:8 is my favorite scripture. I wish I had seen that much sooner.

Hello Phoneman-777, theologian/pastor A. W. Pink addressed this very issue not long after the turn of the 20th Century saying (in small part),

Pink - Modern Evangelists Can Be Cause of Fatal Deceptions.jpg
If someone (who claims to be a Christian) is interested in all of the benefits/blessings that God has to offer them, but they, at the same time, have no desire to be (as Pink says) "delivered from their carnality and worldliness" in this life/do not want, with all of their hearts, to please, honor and glorify God in all that they do/say (and even think) in the here and now, then chances are good that their "claim" of having become a Christian is, sadly, nothing more than that :(

~Deut
p.s. - in saying all that I just did above, I believe that it is also important to remember that our obedience to God is the result or fruit of our salvation, never the cause of it, and that from first to last/from justification to glorification. We are saved by faith in the works that Christ did for us .. alone, IOW, by His shed blood/death on the Cross in our stead, as well by His having lived a perfectly righteous life before His Father on our behalf, the life that we were supposed to live before Him, but could not .. cf
2 Corinthians 5:21.

I've never known evangelicals that would say the Bible isn't important, let alone tell someone not to read it at all. Was there a particular denomination you attended? Seems very odd to me.

Wrong forum, perhaps?
Only perhaps.🤪

I would hope the ones in charge would have secured the safe landing of the plane to the nearest airport in order to avoid undue panic and loss of life .

Though as a metaphore relating to God, it's all according to plan. Man's choices do not overcome that.

One real problem with Evangelism is that no one can really define what it is.
"Evangelical" is sometimes used as an all-encompassing term for Christians.
Even Billy Graham, who was heralded as a leader in the rise of evangelicalism, said once that he was unsure how to define an evangelical Christian. He said, “Actually, that’s a question I’d like to ask somebody too.”

Any Christian can claim to be Evangelical. But if you ask them what that means, they may not have a clue. Evangelism, like the term Fundamentalism can seem to mean many different things to different people.

Both Evangelism and Fundamentalism are fairly new arrivals on the scene of Christianity. Evangelism is said to have started between the 17th or 19th century and Fundamentalism during the 19th century.

Hello @arthurfleminger, I believe that this (not 'truly' understanding one another because of the various meanings that we apply to the same terms) is often what is at the heart of some of the differences that we have with each other (or better, that we think that we have). I have found this to be especially true out here in online Christendom (of course, I have found the opposite to be true as well, sometimes thinking that I am "on the same page" with someone, only to later realize that I am not).

Evangelism is sharing the Christian gospel. Evangelicalism is a loosely-defined subgroup within Christianity.

From the human standpoint, the Gospel has always been easily condensed down to this: "If ye love Me, keep My commandments". ;)

What does loosely defined subgroup mean???????????? Does it mean that anything goes, does it mean that you, as an individual are the final authority and your own pope in matters of faith and morals? So, tell us, what do you mean that Evangelism is a loosely defined subgroup, Doesn't make any sense to me. Thanks.

So, tell us, what do you mean that Evangelism is a loosely defined subgroup,
That is evangelicalism, not evangelism. Evangelical churches are essentially Gospel preaching churches, and at one time they would have been considered fundamentalist. But over the last fifty years, there has been a downward trend in failing to preach the true and pure Gospel of God regularly and consistently (as well as teaching sound Bible doctrine). Also serious efforts at evangelism have not been consistent. Furthermore during the Billy Graham ministry, evangelical churches were expected to cooperate with the Catholic church, which introduced serious spiritual confusion. But Graham was a fundamentalist preacher who changed is position regarding the Catholic church (which is not evangelical).
