I think rugby could work but soccer might do as well. I dont know if they have any teams though. It would only take 45 minutes and the match refs can then decide on what the winner gets.

I have been to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Oahu, Hawaii. That was seriously the longest Luau I have ever been on. One time is plenty, but the center did go over the different cultures in the Pacific Ocean, I believe this included New Zealand.
I will admit that the Samoans were the funniest and the New Zealanders were the scariest. The New Zealanders might of stuck their tongues out at me, and I didn't do anything to them! Not really nice at all. I was trying to learn about different cultures and they stuck their tongues out at me. You believe this?!?!

well if you ARE Maori then its part of your greeting customs for people you actually arent sure of its a challenge. If you accept the challenge, and not intimidated, you are not going to get the tongue, you'll get the hongi! Also helps if you bring a koha (a contribution or donation) if you are on Maori land as you are the guest if they are the host.

In NZ unfortunately the rivers and streams have now become polluted and maori are working on getting them recognised as living entities so they can be protected and cared for again rather than as dumping grounds for waste as has happened. Though some have been dammed for hydropower so some good has come of it as renewable energy, but health of rivers needs to be readdressed.

So how mainstream are Maori? well after the second world war many maori in rural communities started migrating into cities for jobs and started mixing with pakeha (non-maori) but it still a way to go as legacy from land wars means some pakeha still have hositlities and racism toward maori and treated them as inferior. eg not letting them rent areas, forbidding them access, not letting them speak their own langauge or have any say over important matters which affect them, not respecting their culture or just plain avoiding them. some still think they are a problem that will just 'die out' or go away. War and land loss has meant many maori live in poverty that is quite unacceptable but nobody really wants to do anything about it cos govt system is designed for a british/european way of life.

i live in the north Island (also known as the 'winterless north' cos it doesnt snow where I am)
If I want snow need to go further south. Ive not been skiing but I have snowboarded. There are two main skifields one is on a volcano in the middle of the north Island and the other is in the South Island on the southern alps in a tourist town called Queenstown
Surfing there are many surf beaches on the west coast, the most famous being Piha which is not far from. where I am. But I am definitely not a surfie... haha
If you wanted to live somewhere that had a mountain to ski on AND surf beaches then Taranaki would be the place but youd be far way from everything else. And race relations are not the greatsest there ( small towns, small minds)
it amazes me that people think they can just up sticks and move to a new country and not really care about their family and friends left behind but people do it often without blinking and expect the host country to cater to them when in all likelihood there will be little land supply left to build a flash new house for you and you will have to learn new customs not expect everyone to cater to you, it will be a lot of hard work, and even if you bring a billion dollars into the country just cos you can, doesnt mean people will accept you. (one money launderer did that and built his own compound, apparently nz is host to rich criminals now) but if you want to pick apples, teach, or work in restaurants for low pay you can.
why not just have a working holiday here and then go back to your own when you done. If you want to be a surfing or skiing instructor then could work.
But from what I heard americans who settle here is not easy for them. Ive known do many that got marooned here and split up because they married a nzer. lol

I have no plans of going to New Zealand, but did in the past. It wasn't just New Zealand, I looked at many different countries. Recently, I was looking at Armenia. They have the highest Christian population per capita and they don't speak English. So, it will be pretty difficult to get in an argument. lol Probably not moving to Armenia anytime soon, but don't see anything wrong with keeping your options open. I recently moved to Canada and feel like it was a good move so far, but it does take awhile to get used to living in a new country.
It shouldn't amaze you at all, that people pack up, and split to find a better life. This is normal. America is filled with people from many different countries, as well as New Zealand I'm sure. I believe Rome was a mecca for people from different countries back in the day, and the land prospered.
