I heard recently that Filipino culture is generally far less materialistic than many other cultures.
If this is true, it is a pleasant change. Has this been your experience? What would you put that down to, is it by choice or by circumstance?

Hmmm... I don't know about this...because I know some people who are materialistic people (men and women ) who are Filipinos and non Filipinos. I don't know if I,myself a materialistic person I like nice things and a comfortable life at least where I won't eat a rancid food just to fill my hungry tummy...

I came from a very big poor family. Once upon a time i experienced eating a moldy pizza,ate rice with just salt in it...and licked clean the lid of a canned sardine....was difficult to be in that situation

I worked hard to get out from where I used to be...I worked hard to buy the things I want .. I worked hard to give my family a better life....


I like nice things but I am not afraid to experience hardship and dirty my small hands to do hardwork... I value GOOD FRIENDS,FAMILY, GOOD LAUGHS, love,good times over material things because we cannot simply buy THEM in stores even if we got a lot of money or maybe if we can, definitely they are fake and won't last long....

I've been looking to find a Christian wife for a while, and did an internet search to see what ladies in different nations have generally been deemed to be less materialistic, and are more feminine/genteel in nature than those generally of other nations.

I realise that it depends on an individual's upbringing and outlook, but PH came up as a nation that's ladies matched the criteria.

So I joined Christian Filipina, and did more research on the internet, including YouTube. I checked out Filipina Pea's YouTube channel, and even though she seems forthright enough to tell it as it is, some of what she says seems to contradict other comments she has made in the past.

There's a swag of things I have learned through my research, not the least is that although there seems to be widespread poverty in the PH from high unemployment and low wages, yet people are able to eke out some kind of existence and still laugh along the way. That shows a good depth of character, if it's correct.

So, you seem to be saying that people can be as materialistic in PH as in other nations, if they have the opportunity to do so. But in your case you are able to keep materialistic excesses in check for the reasons you stated, which are good ones.

I hope I'm not embarrassing you, but I wonder if I might ask a few more questions please? Not related to materialism, but as to why there seems to be so many single mothers looking for companions on Christian Filipina, and is it true that foreigner husbands have to provide money for the care of their wife's family, and is it safe to drive on PH roads because no one seems to abide by the road rules. The reason I ask these questions is, that if I were to move to PH, would my kindness be abused, and am I likely to be killed or maimed in a road accident.

The reason I ask these questions is, that if I were to move to PH, would my kindness be abused, and am I likely to be killed or maimed in a road accident.

As far as I know many of our road users follow the road rules but you know I think... it is quite normal sometimes to encounter reckless drivers on the road isn't it?

Our roads are just like other roads...where sometimes accidents happen and some days you might encounter some irresponsible drivers.

I think...Just follow the road safety etiquettes and you'll be fine...


Well,I am a Filipino and I lost count already of how many times people took advantage of me...so it is all up to us...no one can take advantage of your kindness if you won't allow it. Observe your surroundings and pray to God to give you a godly wife who will love you and take good care of you and will not rip you off and will not leave you even if you don't have money anymore...


No...it is not your duty to take care of your wife's family....but it is happening in my country well I can't say it is not happening because I've seen some...

It is nice to help specially if you are helping the family of the person you love...but it is different if they are abusing your kindness already...set boundaries to avoid this kind of situation to happen to you...Happily give but learn to say no sometimes... I am not Filipino, nor ever even been to the Philipines, yet i'll share my limited input on the matter.
First off is my father, who was in the Korean War, in the Navy. The Philipines was a common place to dock and get some leave. Especially if you frequented the bars, one thing you could count on was the women there throwing themselves at the American sailors. Why? Trying to marry a 'rich' American so they could get out of the Philipines.
Even on CC i've had my own experiences. I used to be more active in the chat rooms, and i eventually had to make a rule not to interact with women from the Philipines. The reason why? There were so many PM's from them trying to find a man from another country. They were on the prowl with no other motive than a man with enough money to move them out of their country. And if you told them you weren't rich, or not rich enough to get them out, many would literally not say another word to you. Some of the nicer ladies would chat longer, but still disappear shortly after.

So if you're looking to the Philipines for a wife, be warned of how common it is for women there to look to find a man to use.
Obviously not All the women there, i did end up making some friends with women from the Philipines and none of them seemed to have this goal in mind. But it does seem common enough to be a risk.

There seems to be very little feminism as we know it in their culture. As other people have noted, the biggest hazard are the gold diggers.

Yes, I got caught. I was introduced to a filipina by an administrator of a Christian Singles FB site. He said I should be careful not to mislead her, or mistreat her in any way because she had suffered online abuse in the past. I don't mistreat people, irrespective, but I was extra guarded against saying anything that might be misconstrued and hurt her feelings.

The guy that introduced us, he being the admins, I assumed he had a true insight into her situation. I am always careful not to be taken in by scammers, but learning about her 'plight' I decided to send her $100 aud (not a huge amount to waste) through him to help her. But when I got a photo from her of her laying on her bed in a nightie, I realised something was amiss. So I did some research and came across the soft core scam culture that is evident in the PH, and put some questions to her to test her integrity. She tripped over her own lies.

Apparently for many filipinas we Western men are fair game. It's a shame, because I suspect the rest are sincere and would make great wives!

Please be careful sir ...as I've said those types of women do exist...just be careful...sending an inappropriate picture is definitely a red flag...one more thing conversations with her always go directly to money...that's another red flag...it is the same if you are a woman talking to a foreign man and he always turns the conversation to sexual things... the kind of people you should always avoid...

I was watching a YouTube video about BGC yesterday. It seems well laid out, tidy and orderly, but a bit more expensive accommodation wise than other cities, it seems.

Do the people that live in cities know of the poverty that is in PH city slums, and feel guilty about it, or are they insular about it all? How do those living in the slums feel about the modern buildings and wide spaces and western lifestyle of cities like BGC, or are they unaware of their existence?

I am sure everyone can see or aware of it...distribution of wealth usually is not fair in countries like the Philippines where the rich becomes richer and the poor just live...

I understand how big the gap between those people living in luxury and us the poor people but what else we can do but work hard lol so that our younger generation kids will have a better life in the future... besides we can't expect the rich to help us...or force them to give some of their wealth to us...but you know a wealthy follower of the Lord Jesus knows this... Jesus taught us to be kind to help the poor They know that everything we have everything else that exists is all HIS...And when God's children give God is pleased.


I've been to BGC and that place is really nice. BGC is not the only place with high rise buildings actually there are many places like BGC in Philippines how do we feel about it. They are nice and beautiful sometimes I wish I were rich lol




Life is not fair to some that's what I've learned growing up..but We have Jesus that gives us hopes...and is always faithful and true.




If you will find a good filipina Christian woman and You will live in the Philippines someday, always remember that family is important to us especially our parents....

We are taught to be respectful to everyone especially to our elders...

Usually in our culture family bonds are often tight knit lol so don't be surprised if you'll meet also your wife's distant relatives like her grandfather' s great grandfather aunt lol



Filipinos are hospitable...When we have visitors at home we will do a lot of home preparations like put new clean curtains, bed sheets,new plates, spoons etc we will give then the best accommodation so that they'll feel at home and enjoy their stay.

There are many good and positive things you'll discover about our culture just take your time...if you will meet the right people in Philippines you'll enjoy and love your time and stay in Philippines.

Your answers and other information that you have provided help give a more insider based understanding of reality compared to what might be glossed over or even darkened elsewhere. I've no doubt PH culture can teach me a thing or two, and change me for the better. But I'm a bit of a realist and don't think I would fit well into PH society, and it would be unreasonable for me to expect a filipina to move to my homeland and turn her back on her culture and responsibilities.
