Nicotine is the most wonderful tranquilizer of any, the problem is that the way it soothes is gone in a flash and it becomes an irritant that can only be soothed by more nicotine. It makes the body crave nicotine.
I sincerely quit smoking at least 5,200 times, every night for over 20 hears, and started smoking that many times for my prayer life was taken up with a plea to be rid of the addiction. When I finally rid myself of it, it was because I had so overindulged a night I was so upset I back to back smoked. (The doctor had misdiagnosed by husband as being terminally ill) I landed in the hospital with nicotine poisoning.
I don't think there is any doubt smoking is no way to grow spiritually. Our body is a temple of God, not to be damaged with such smelly things. But our way of handling the addiction can be worse than the addiction itself.
