why speak in tongues? Jesus said we would in Mark 16 and they are a sign to the unbeliever 1cor chapter 14 and he who speaks in tongues speaks to God not a man unless there is an interpretation
It is a well know fact that the word "tongues" is "languages"
G1100 = glōssa = Of uncertain affinity; the tongue; by implication a language....
Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues (glōssa), as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Act 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of
every nation under heaven.
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded,
because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
Act 2:7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
Act 2:8 And how hear we every
man in our own tongue (glōssa), wherein we were born?
Why do i need to speak in a mysterious language to speak to God? God understands all languages and the Holy Spirit can interpret all languages into the Heavenly language. Why not just speak in the language we can understand?
Maybe you are saying bad things about God and blaspheming His name? You would not know if you do not know what you are saying.
1Co 14:6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues
(glōssa) , what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
1Co 14:7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
1Co 14:8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
1Co 14:9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue

easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues

1Co 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue
