I think it does matter if you want to find the truth. And there are many methods beyond Carbon dating that indicate the age of something. If God gave us the intellectual ability to use science to find out about the world around us, why do we disagree with the the field evidence?
We disagree because of presumptions.

Yes, but what about relative age dating. Rocks are laid horizontally. The top layer of rocks has to be younger then the bottom layer
of rocks, assuming they haven't been turned upside down by tectonic forces. And what about the fact of the different rock types that exist within that layer and how each one was formed. There may be sedimentary rocks below igneous rocks below metamorphic rocks each indicating a different geological period. Another difficult point to ignore are the fossils within those layers and how they disappeared within the next layer. Wouldn't it take millions of years to form all of this? And why and how did all the life forms disappear from one layer to the next?
There’s the issue; you assume that present-day processes are the key to historical processes. It ain’t necessarily so.

that evidence is based on on things we can see today.

we can't assume things that happened 6000 years ago are the same as they are today.

so it is just a big guess.

also, if you believe in creation. and you believe creation is miraculous. then science can not prove or disprove miraculous events.

What do you say to people who say the earth is 4.6 billion years old?
It's not that old. But it's not as young as Ken Ham believes. An earth "day " didn't even exist until the 4th day of creation.

It does not matter to me, we do not disagree on the science regarding the aging, since I do not have an opinion. It does not concern me. Does not change anything, I will still be in my forties, the world is still going to be a mess, people are still a mess, Manchester city is still going to win the premier leagur, regardless of the age of the earth, or the shape. So, a pointless distraction for me. I would rather go pick some mushrooms, and make a darn good meal. Only reason for pondering this question is because the news is not news, we already knew everything in the socalled news 1 year ago. And perhaps it is interesting to know in relation to how long oil must stew under pressure till it is ripe for harvesting.

I’ve often wondered how long ago “before the foundation of the world” is.

What do you say to people who say the earth is 4.6 billion years old?
I sometimes tell them that God created the universe with the appearance of age.

For example, I don't think Adam and Eve were babies that God gave a bag of seeds to and said "plant these for food and good luck out there". No, I believe God created Adam and Eve as adults, on an earth that had trees with tree rings already in them and animals that were fully grown All the other biological and cosmological phenomena that under natural circumstances would take a long time to appear that way. But the creation was supernatural.

The universe appears to be older than it is (according to some modern dating methods), but it is not.

I'm glad you understand facts, now do you understand even harder facts, Jesus is the son of God and God the Father, God the Son/Redeemer, and God the Holy Spirit created the universe 13.7 billion years ago, day one as it is "known" is really YOWM 1 and the Hebrew word used for YOWM is used as a TIME REFERENCE and any space of time can be inserted as long as it matches the facts in reference. So, the first day lasted 9.2 Billion Years from 13.7 Million BC until 4.5 Billion BC.

Now less shut down the debate of the young earthers.......I must say, every time I see this argument I just SMH.

So, the question is can we understand how YOWM is used via intellect, or are we bound to our thought process that mandates it has to be a day when the Hebrew language was very primitive, they had only around 4000 words, and many words were used to many many things in multiple forms, like the word YOWM.

Some examples where this word is used in a different way besides a day can be seen BELOW: Notice it's always used as a PERIOD OF TIME of some sort.

2 Kings 17:37 And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore(YOWM); and ye shall not fear other gods.

Genesis 4:3 And in process of time(YOWM) it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting(YOWM).

Ezekiel 4:6 And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year(YOWM).

Exodus 13:10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year(YOWM).

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth(YOWM), seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Genesis 40:4 And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he served them: and they continued a season(YOWM) in ward.

Joshua 24:7 And when they cried unto the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season(YOWM).

1 Kings 9:3 And the Lord said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually(YOWM).

Genesis 29:14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space(YOWM) of a month.

Leviticus 26:34 Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long(YOWM) as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.

Deuteronomy 28:29 And thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways: and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled evermore(YOWM), and no man shall save thee.

Deuteronomy 5:29 O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always(YOWM), that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

Genesis 6:5 And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually(YOWM).

Genesis 41:1 And it came to pass at the end of two full(YOWM) years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

I could go on and on, but I think this shows enough variation and instances which show us that the Hebrew word YOWM is used for a PERIOD OF TIME of many sorts. Of course, it is going to be used for a day more than any other word because God is going to use "SPECIFIC MENTIONS OF DAYS" more than any other period of time. Whenever a Prophets says that there will be so and so many days of this or that he used the word YOWM. But when it was meant as EVERMORE he also used the word YOWM, and when it meant a YEAR they also used the word YOWM, etc., etc.

So God uses the word YOWM and it's up to us to EVENTUALLY figure out what "PERIOD OF TIME" He(God) meant by that !! The Hebrew language had 4000 words and no vowels at the time, it was a primitive language of course. We shouldn't allow the professors of that time (Pharisees, Scribes) to sway us into saying this has to mean ONE DAY, it was a period of time and it's up to us to figure it out in the end. All men knew back then comparatively speaking was that we had days/years/months. So they had to see it as something, what was it going to be ? Day, Year, Month, Evermore, Perpetually, Full, Always, X Required, Space of time, etc., etc. They sure didn't have a clue about how big the universe is like we do, they had no concept of billions of years like we do.

So God created the Universe in a period of 7 YOWMS...........which as shown above means periods of times in various ways. We have to figure it out, we can't allow the dog to lead us here, we have to lead the dog. We can't allow the word DAY (YOWM) to force us to look at things in a way which it drives people away from the Gospel. We want to understand the facts, therefore we can reach people in truth.

The facts are right there in print, the word YOWM is not only used for actual days. So, God gave Moses the first 5 books, how would God want 7s to Interpret or Translate YOWM? By looking at all the facts, we see light that it has taken billions of years to travel down to earth, or in some cases, millions of years. If God created the Earth 6000 or so years ago we would not be able to see the Stars in Heaven. Thus we know the earth is billions of years old, as are the stars. END OF DEBATE.

So, as I said then, the earth is some sort of an age, and the age does not matter. Only what it is, matters, how it treats us as humanbeings while we remain here on earth. Age is but a number on the wall, very much like a clock on the wall, that goes round and round forevermore day after day, year after year. Bit insidebaseball for the people who have analogue wallclocks of course, I do not, because age and time does not matter. So we should focus on what the timee is spent on.

1. Evening and the morning being used sort of destroys this theory
2. if god created the lights to be used on the earth when he created them it does not take billions of years, he is God he is able to make the ,get appear that day.

so your end of debate was just destroyed

I think it does matter if you want to find the truth. And there are many methods beyond Carbon dating that indicate the age of something. If God gave us the intellectual ability to use science to find out about the world around us, why do we disagree with the the field evidence?
The search for the Truth is never ending. However, the answer to the Truth is not in the sciences. It can only be found in the Scriptures.

The answer to the Earth's true age, is found in Scripture - In as much as, whether it be young or old. It depends on if you hold to the idea, that the Earth was "created" in six continuous days, from beginning to end, or you hold to the "Gap Theory". The "Gap Theorists", believe there is a gap of time between Gen.1:1 and Gen. 1:2. They believe the Earth is much older than 6,000+ years. They contend that the Heavens and the Earth were laid down eons ago. That the Earth was reformed or recreated, by the purpose of God, for mankind. This reformation took place in six days, some 6,000+ years ago.

They are accused of altering the Truth of God, to make room for the Sciences.

However, they do have some interesting points. Here is just one of them:

If God creates all things for it's intended purpose and it is equipped to carry out that purpose from the beginning, then why was the Earth found in darkness and void (Useless), at the beginning of Genesis?

I sometimes tell them that God created the universe with the appearance of age.

For example, I don't think Adam and Eve were babies that God gave a bag of seeds to and said "plant these for food and good luck out there". No, I believe God created Adam and Eve as adults, on an earth that had trees with tree rings already in them and animals that were fully grown All the other biological and cosmological phenomena that under natural circumstances would take a long time to appear that way. But the creation was supernatural.

The universe appears to be older than it is (according to some modern dating methods), but it is not.

Right because it was created, not born.

I do believe the earth was created in 7 twenty four hour days. in which the 7th day represents the millenial kingdom. When the Lord said it was good or very good it was exactly the way He planned it, holy and perfect. Another way of saying it was creation was without sin for 7 days when He spoke. So what represents no sin for seven days. The week of Unleavened Bread is the only feast to represent creation! Spring Feast today they mostly call Passover all 7 days

I think it was also , and I think mans pride tells us through science it could have only been created over billions of years but then again they believe it was all an accident created by a random unexplained explosion and just happened over time by chance

man is really foolish but if we would believe what God said we would have faith to understand him

I know we like to call the first couple chapters of the Bible "the account of creation". However, we should look at it as God moving from obscurity (as far as man is concerned) into a place man can understand Him. This isn't so much about the majesty of God as it is Him revealing Himself to man so that man might know Him.

We first might notice that both heaven and earth are created realms. Neither heaven and earth are eternal because they both have a beginning and an end. So, God was not sitting in heaven awaiting a time to do something. He always existed. At His behest, He begins to reveal Himself from the first point of the record, in Genesis 1:1. However, when He begins to reveal Himself, He creates what may accommodate who He already is. My point is it was not arbitrary or nice or artistic that God created the heavens and the earth: He has fashioned creation to house elements of His character and being in time and space so that He might be known by man.

So, in a very real way, all the scriptures are allegorical. That is to say: all scripture has a natural meaning and a spiritual meaning because they all point back to the One Who created time and space: the Living God. With that in mind, do you begin to see the answer for your question? I can continue if you wish but perhaps you already see it.

It is the original state of creation. Before the 7 days of putting everything together.
