Does one have to hear the gospel to believe, or does God operate independently of the gospel to create/produce faith in us?

Agreed. But how would anyone actually know Ps 2:12 ?? Or are you saying a person could just somehow believe in God?
This depends on the persons understanding of what their belief is. We have different perspective on things. Me personally, my belief is understanding and sharing the gospel of the Lord.

Romans 10:14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Agree completely. FYI: especially during the early church, when there was no NT and a lot of preaching about Jesus involved using OT scripture! How would they “hear”, or understand, without a preacher? Thank you for your input, God bless.

I do not like to use a quote to prove a point but this passage does speak to the issue:

Romans 1:20
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

God's creation has certainly had a major impact on my faith. This issue sounds a little like the "chicken or egg" question. Could we find faith in a universe that spoke an entirely different language? If there was no beauty or no truth would we ever find them?

All creation speaks of the creator. The Gospel and creation both speak to the goodness of God. If we choose to be deaf to one the other is moot.

Only those who believe by grace through faith in the shed righteous blood of Jesus for the propitiation of their sins attain to life ever after. All others suffer the second death in the Lake of Fire. God has promised to reveal Himself to those who diligently and sincerely seek Him. God's promises are true :) Also, Scripture attests to the fact that God's existence is manifest in creation, and those who deny Him are suppressing the truth of the matter, as per Romans 1:19-20, which says they are without excuse.

For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.

Generally speaking, pride is the culprit for denying God.

Knowing there is a God, and understanding that means we have a Creator, it logically follows that desiring to know Who He is and whether or not He has a purpose for creating us would become a worthy pursuit, and important to find out the truth of the matter. God reveals Himself in a multiplicity of ways; the Holy Spirit helps in this regard :)

And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness
and judgment: in regard to sin, because they do not believe in Me; in regard to
righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.

The role of the Holy Spirit is comprehensive. He is our Comforter,
Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, and Strengthener.

He also convicts the world of sin. People know God exists, but deny it.

Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him
must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

God resists/opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.

Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.

When the Holy Spirit enters a person to dwell, the Gospel comes with Him.

Gods attributes are seen in his creation so that people are without excuse, so I believe God can convict someone independently of them having to be told the gospel.

Nature is probably the most powerful thing that opens the soul
