heatwaves, wildfires, floods. If there’s still any doubt that the summer of 2021 is a turning point for a global awakening over the looming climate crisis, you can add one more plague of biblical proportions to the list: famine.

The southern part of the island nation of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa, is experiencing its worst drought in four decades, with the World Food Program (WFP) warning recently that 1.14 million people are food-insecure and 400,000 people are headed for famine. Hunger is already driving people to eat raw cactus, wild leaves and locusts, a food source of last resort. The WFP, which is on the ground helping with food distribution, describes scenes of unimaginable suffering, with families bartering everything they have—even cooking pots and spoons—for the paltry tomatoes, scrawny chickens and few bags of rice still available in the markets. “The next planting season is less than two months away and the forecast for food production is bleak,” writes WFP spokesperson Shelley Thakral in a dispatch from the most affected area. “The land is covered by sand; there is no water and little chance of rain.”

The WFP warns that the number of locals facing phase 5 catastrophic food insecuritydevelopment speak for famine—could double by October. And the group has the responsible party squarely in their sight. “This is not because of war or conflict, this is because of climate change,” says WFP Executive Director David Beasley.

Historically, famines resulted from crop failure, disaster or pest invasion; modern famines are largely considered to be man-made—sparked by conflict combined with natural disasters or incompetence and political interference. Madagascar is facing none of those, making it the first famine in modern history to be caused solely by climate change alone. It’s unlikely to be the last, says Landry Ninteretse, the Africa director for climate advocacy organization 350.org. “In recent years we’ve seen climate calamities hitting one country after another. Before it was the horn of Africa, and now it is Madagascar. Tomorrow the cycle will go on, maybe in the northern part of Africa—the Sahel—or the west. And unfortunately, it is likely to continue happening because of climate change.”

Increasing temperatures are disrupting global weather patterns that farmers, particularly those in the developing world, have relied upon for centuries. Monsoons have become increasingly unpredictable, starting later than usual, showing up in the wrong place, or sometimes not showing up at all. This is wreaking havoc in places that depend on rain for agriculture. The southern part of Madagascar, a lush, largely tropical island famous for its biodiversity, has experienced below average rainfall for the past five years. Most people in the south depend on rain-fed, small-scale agriculture for survival, but because of the drought, rivers and irrigation dams have dried up.

The WFP says it needs $78.6 million dollars to provide lifesaving food for the next lean season in Madagascar, but it is going to take a lot more than that to help the countries most affected by climate change able to adapt in ways that prevent future famines. Southern Madagascar, for example, will probably need irrigation systems, along with more drought-tolerant crops and hardier breeds of cattle. Madagascar, one of the poorest nations in the world, is unlikely to be able to afford such innovations on its own.

As part of the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change, wealthy nations agreed to set aside $100 billion a year in climate financing to help developing nations adapt, but they have yet to meet that goal. In 2018, the latest year for which data are available, donors were still short $20 billion. But investing in climate change adaptation and mitigation plays dividends in the long run. The World Bank estimates that climate change could cause more than 140 million people to move within their countries’ borders by 2050 in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America, with severe consequences on economic development. Many others will seek to leave their countries entirely. “We used to see our brothers and sisters in the Sahel leaving because of conflict and looking for better economic opportunities, but now it is climate change that is becoming one of the major drivers, pushing out people who can no longer cultivate their land,” says Ninteretse. “This is not only going to impact Africa, but also Europe, Asia, and America as well, as people seek safer places where they can live.”

Madagascar may seem far away, but the issues should feel close to home, wherever “home” might be. “This famine in Madagascar, the heat wave in America, the floods in Germany, this is an indicator that climate change needs to be taken seriously,” says Ninteretse. “In the same way the world reacted the pandemic and were able to get vaccines in less than a year—If the world would have reacted in the same way when we started sending the first warning signals of climate change, the situation would be much better than what it is now.”

This is all unfortunate, but predicted. Throwing money at a problem isn’t solving the problem. It’s like getting medicine to hide a symptom instead of curing the disease. When famines occur, either people move to a favourable location and if they can’t then they die. Then the strong and resourceful carry on. They either become super competent at solving their problems or super militant and invade weaker places and kill them and take over. The strong bailing out the weak isn’t sustainable. Many will argue that view isn’t Christian. Christians are more than welcome to extend assistance in the name of Jesus and hopefully bring some to Christ. Making donations to worldly governments to preserve the lives of anti-Christians that God has abandoned may not be long term solutions. If you can’t feed yourself, you die. That’s how God designed it.

It is not "climate change" (There is no such thing - not by the modern propaganda definition.); rather, it is HAARP technology (and related).

It is man-made.

We (humans) have the ability to "toy" with the weather. And, the evil powers-that-be are using the technology to wreak havok in the world...

This is a CLUE:

The "irregularity" of 'nature' is being caused by mankind "messing with nature" through/with man-made technology.

if weather control is just a conspiracy theory, then why is there a united nations ban on the use of weather weapons.

made in the late 70's.

I thought it was an intresting news article, it is looking bleak at the moment in the world. i cant imagine what people must be going through over there. eating locusts and wild leafs and stuff to stay alive.

The articles seems to suggest they havent grown any crops for five years there due to lack of insuficient rain fall. and as a result theres now a famine there. The articles goes onto say the worst drought for 40 years. Only this time the article says its because of global warming, backing up this belief that it is global warming because of other events happening all over the world.

Is this the signs of worse times ahead. maybe we will just have to wait and see.

I’m certain worse times are ahead. It’s interesting though. I am interested to hear about how the Christians are holding up. God told me to be ready for anything awhile ago. I have made preparations for all sorts of emergencies. I wonder if He told anyone the same thing there. If that’s the case then He has saved many of His children to carry on.

Climate change is happening...of that fact there is no doubt.
Polar ice is melting at a phenomenal rate...
I even heard that they found an intact wooly mammoth with buttercups in its mouth still.
And I think that the latest find was an extinct species of lion cubs in Russian Ice.
So apparently these animals were surprised/trapped when the polar ice was formed.
Also since our use of petroleum and coal was at the lowest levels they have been in a hundred years due to quarantines...and the problem with polar ice melting hasn't slowed but instead sped up...

I don't think that there's anything we can do about it.

The dust bowl of the 1930s. Was it the result of man made climate climate change? How did man intervene to change the climate supporting the dust bowl? Where would the US be today had man not intervened?

The dust bowl of the '30's was not a climate change but an instance of extremely poor soil conservation brought about by several factors including a lack of groceries being farmed. (Which left the ground unplanted)

The normal winds blew the dust about unchecked by foliage. So tree windbreakers were planted... and they helped. So did the resumption of farming crops...and a little more rain.

This climate change is not regional but global. We have polar ice melting and ice shelving disappear.
Jet stream changes have been noted.

We can't effect change that is going to do anything...our distance from the sun hasn't changed...nor has the length of seasons. A day is still 24 hrs.

If the problems exist anywhere it will be Russia and China and Africa.

The actions taken by man changed the results of the dust bowl. Compare the inaction taken by the men of the USSR, India and China.

I should add that the reduction in the water level of aquifers nationwide needs to be addressed.

The modern-day catch-phrases "climate change" and "global warming" - and what they represent - are nothing to worry about. It is all propaganda with an agenda.

Hellooo Aquifers!

I love the conclusion -- "the biggest thing you did wrong was to tell Mr. Hobbs you can play golf" like AOC telling us she could fix climate change if we give her $10 trillion.

Our (the earths) climate runs in cycles. It has since God instituted the seasons. Periods of warming and periods of cooling have always occurred. Numerous things add to the cause for these cycles.

Man, in and of himself, IS NOT NOW, nor ever has he been the SOLE REASON for climate change. Be it warming or cooling.

Is there a warming trend in progress? Yes. However the problem with the argument for "man made global warming" is that any records being broken are by and far from decades past. There was no argument for mans guilt back then. Apparently, millions of man made global warming alarmist have completely forgotten the "DUST BOWL" years. They have also forgotten the Ice Age, and the following Melt Down Age. But, if they are reminded of these, they will probably just find a way to blame man, even though he was not even around during the Ice Age...............

Man WILL NOT destroy the earth. GOD WILL! And He will do this in HIS TIME, not mans.

As far as the arguments of the oceans rising...........I want to know WHY I SHOULD NOT HAVED OCEAN FRONT PROPERTY? Why should it only be for those idiots who spend millions building on SHIFTING SAND? And then they cry MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING when a storm comes along and wipes them out..........goodness

Yeah, not buying this either. FL, a state AT sea level, still has its beaches. Supposedly, that region has been experiencing an increase in the number and the strength of its tropical storms because of global warming. Unfortunately, the USGS website throws a monkey wrench into those works.

Famines happen. Forest fires happen. Pestilences happen. Wars happen. They always have, and they always will -- until Jesus is sitting in Jerusalem.
