I’m pretty sure the lesson is you’re not supposed to create pictures of what you think Jesus, heaven and the things in it would look like because our limited human intellect cannot imagine what those things actually look like. It’s like disrespectful because you are human and what images you create cannot compare. Jesus and heaven are way more glorious and beautiful than what we are capable of imagining. It also can be a protective commandment as it is a gateway to division among God’s people, as you see everyone in this thread is busy arguing about what things of heaven look like.
You're not supposed to make images because they poison us, Love is spiritual, not physical/visual.

I'm just asking because the commandment to not make any graven image or likeness of anything in heaven above, earth below, or the water under the earth is pretty broad.

That means we probably shouldn't be watching TV, looking at the Internet, looking at magazines, avoiding any sort of mental imagining of things in heaven, earth, or the waters. I mean, it sounds like OP is saying to find a rock to crawl under and hide.

Unless the commandment is about not worshipping or bowing down to those images then I can understand that. Otherwise, it's an impossible command to keep in my honest opinion.

Yes that’s exactly what it’s about. People start worshipping the images without noticing. They begin to treat the images like they are actually God in front of them. They bow down and pray in front of the statues and sculptures, they feel less comfortable sinning in front of a statue or picture of Jesus rather than just feeling uncomfortable sinning in general, they feel like they can’t get through the day or feel anxious if they don’t have that picture of Jesus in their wallet, etc. People begin to idolize these images and most of the time without noticing. God made those commandments to protect you.

Pretty sure animals don't make any images and they seem to get by just fine.
Was watching some horses eating grass earlier and they all seemed pretty chilled.

Yes that too! I tried to add to the post but it doesn’t let you edit after it’s been up for 5 minutes. People start to worship the images without noticing. They look to the image and ask for forgiveness if they just did something sinful in front of it, they bow down and pray in front of it, they feel uncomfortable throughout the day if they forgot their image of Jesus at home, treating the image like it’s a source of God’s protection, etc. Our human minds turn them into idols and don’t even realize that we started to put the image in God’s place, and act like it’s actually God in front of us when He is everywhere all the time anyway.

I don’t know what you mean. I’m talking about humans making images of God, Jesus, heaven, etc.

KJV Charish "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, OR ANY LIKENESS of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: QUOTE]

You quoted Exodus 20:4, but conveniently avoided the completion of the verse in Exodus 20:5. You shall not bow down and worship them!

All idolaters will have their part in the lake of fire! Rev 21:8.

Do not harden your heart, PaulNew.

All images.

God is Love.

Love is spiritual. It is genuinely, genuinely caring for one another. Love unites us. Images are one of the many things that divide us.

All images? Not sure what scripture you’re getting that from, but I’m pretty sure the scripture you quoted was don’t make anything that you cannot see because you cannot recreate it with your limited human intellect and it can become an idol. I don’t see how creating images of trees, etc. is poison. Not to mention it said anything above or beneath the earth, not ON earth.

there's nothing about being first-born that means you have to take a Nazarite vow. that vow according to scripture was 100% voluntary and 100% temporary. it was not imposed on anyone, per the law ((Numbers 6))

which makes Samson extraordinary -- because The Angel of the LORD ((Christ)) informed his mother ((Judges 13)) that he would be a Nazarite from the womb, so that even she had to follow the vow while she was carrying him, and remained a Nazarite his whole life -- even while breaking the vow many times ((coming into contact with corpses, drinking wine)). Samson did not voluntarily take the vow and did not take it for a specified time, both of which are contrary to the laws given in Numbers 6. that's a great mystery to study out ;)

IMO people call Jesus a Nazarite for two reasons:
  1. they confuse being a Nazarene ((a person from Nazareth, Matt. 2:23)) with a Nazarite.
  2. they knowingly call Him a Nazarene contrary to evidence ((Luke 7:34, etc)) because they're pushing abstinence from alcohol
I agree that it is unlikely that Jesus was a Nazirite, but John the Baptist likely was. Historically, Christianity has made a number of false assumptions, for example, infant sprinkling. It does not matter to some that the word "baptise" means to immerse, as in a sunken ship. It's a tradition without a basis. God is not going to send people to hell because they believe in sprinkling either. The prophet Samuel was consecrated a Nazirite also. As you say, mostly it is voluntary and also may or may not be temporary.

If you are born again (John 3:3, 3:5, 3:7), you will understand and appreciate what was written in the OP.

It is because people are not born of the Spirit (from heaven above), that they are unable to see the wickedness of portraying Jesus as an effeminate man with long hair. It is a gross insult to our great God and Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ!

Nah that's not it.

It's just you can't maintain any consistency. You say don't make an image of Jesus with long hair because, in your view, that's feminine. You're entitled to that view.

However, you neglected to address the spirit of the commandment against making graven images or things in heaven, earth, or the waters for the express purpose of bowing down and worshipping. I don't think God minced any words, but you did.

Even your profile picture is an image of flowers on earth. Is it your idol? Only if you're worshipping it. It's the same for anything else. Idols are objects of worship, not the images themselves.

To prove this, Exodus 25:10-22 gives the exact dimensions, from God Himself, for the ark of the covenant the Israelites should make. The ark of the covenant is a graven image of something from heaven according to Revelation 11:19.

So is it an idol still or is it only an idol if they worship the ark of the covenant? You know the answer so there you have it.

Someon here has posted that long hair made Jesus look effeminate. He also had a beard in most renditions of the Nazar, so what kind of women is this person thinking of>?

This thread is just a tad bit nowhere.

The thread is 100% true. It is Biblical and spiritual and it glorifies God!

Pictures of our Lord Jesus are 100% false. No one know how He looked like!
Pictures of an effeminate long-haired Christ, popular among so-called Christians, are doubly insulting to our great God and Saviour!

Examine what Jesus-Yeshua informs us about marriage in the Kingdom. Read where with our Fasther there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, slave or free, male or female.
Now learn to see all in the Spirit and do not be blinded by your lack of vision in this age. Do people here have something against wormen?

In addition I do take humbrage with any who say such things about Jesus with long hair or with short hair. It is judging very poorly. My parents theirs, and most generations previous all saw Jesus as they felt correct. What next, is Black Jesus also on your list of shames to God? It is certain He does not mind innocent traditions for it is written He does not mind.

Go back to your judgmenttal cult but remember you are not being condemned by any who love Jesus, short or long hair in their imagination.

“It is certain He does not mind innocent traditions for it is written He does not mind.”
This is a figment of your imagination. God does mind! It is not an innocent tradition. It is a false, corrupt tradition, fostered by the archdeceiver Satan. Read your Bible!

And please read this!

Pictures of Christ are idols. According to the dictionary, the word ‘idol’ means worship of God through images. Idolatry denotes worship of God in a visible form. Baker’s Dictionary of Theology states: “Because God was invisible and transcendent, men set up idols as a materialistic expression of Him. Soon the created thing was worshiped as a god instead of the Creator.” (Isn’t that shocking?)

In the Bible the great example of the idolatry is the golden calf fashioned by Aaron (Exodus 32). That calf was made to represent God. Similarly in 1 Kings 12.28, Jeroboam fashioned two golden calves and declares, “Behold, O Israel, your gods who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” In both cases (Aaron in Exodus 32, and Jeroboam in 1 King 12), the images of the calves were used to represent the LORD God. Is that not an affront to the awesome, invisible, incorruptible, Most High and Most Holy God? (No wonder God’s wrath burned against His people, for their outrageous folly. Idolatry was one great reason why the Israelites went into the Babylonian captivity.)

Deut 4.12-15 forbids idolatry in the strongest terms. There should be no ‘similitude’ (no image) of God. Therefore using pictures of Christ is deliberately violating God’s command. Do we want to disobey God? Do we want to rebel against our Creator?

If we accept pictures of Christ, we are violating the Word of God which expressly forbids the use of images (pictures) to represent God. It may be argued that Christ did walk in the flesh, but can anyone say how he looked like? Further, it must be remembered that we do not worship an earthly Christ, but the Risen Christ. Moreover, Scripture declares that now we know Christ no longer after the flesh (2 Cor 5.16); rather we know and worship Him in spirit and in truth. John 4.23, 24. We are to be, not carnal, not soulish, not worldly, not unregenerate, — but truly spiritual Christians. Alas, the word ‘spiritual’ is not understood by the majority of evangelical Christians these days. They are all blinded by popular charismatic Catholic idolatry.

Can we not know God from reading and meditating on His Word? Must we need pictures to visualize how He looks like? If young children are given pictures of Christ, or see videos or films of Christ, they will seek the visual (having ‘seen’ Him through a false sentimental image, a portrait drawn by an sensual and unregenerate artist). They will lose the desire to seek the written Word. They will not ‘hear the Word of God’, Rom 10.17; and their faith will deteriorate. The false visual image has deceived them. That is what the Roman Catholic church has done in promoting the use of images (which is nothing but idolatry!)

Looking at pictures of Christ distorts our view of Christ. Only the Word of God reveals Christ; nothing else. Christ is the Living Word, and the Bible is the Written Word. We need to read God’s Word verse by verse and learn true doctrine, instead of contaminating our minds with false pictures of Christ. (How could Christ have long hair in the first place, when the Bible says it is a shame for a man to have long hair? How could Christ be so effeminate, as the pictures show Him?)

The Second Commandment in Exodus 20:4-6 is severe. You shall not make any graven image (that includes pictures) or any likeness of anything in heaven above or on earth beneath or in the water under the earth (how sweeping is the statement; it covers the whole of creation!)

A picture is a part of creation. To picture a man is to picture ‘creation’ (because man is a creature, created by God). Romans chapter 1 states that man refused to worship God and became vain in his imagination. That’s why he turned to idolatry. Rom 1.22,23. Idolatry in turn led to immorality, which in turn led to perversion. Today we have widespread homosexuality. According to Paul, it all began with idolatry – which rejects true spiritual worship of God, in favour of popular man-made religion (so terribly defiled by heathen superstitions).

Pictures hinder us from meditating on the pure Word of God. We are not letting the Word of God transform our minds. We continue to hold on to the image of Christ! That image becomes a barrier to the Word, and as a result our faith is starved. No wonder we are told to flee from idols (images, pictures of Christ)

What does a picture of Christ do? It appeals to our aesthetic sense, our physical sense. It does not appeal to us spiritually. We are being influenced by the imagination of the artist. We are actually committing the heresy of Pantheism, in which creation is confused with the Creator. Is it a wonder that Hindu idolaters can accommodate a picture of Christ in their gallery of gods? They know that this picture of Christ is an IDOL.

Pictures of Christ corrupt true worship. Our worship should be in spirit and in truth. It is not soulish or carnal worship, which is an abomination to God. We are not to go by ‘visual depictions’; we are to adhere to ‘written Scripture’.

Pictures of Christ are the product of man’s corrupt imagination. We know Christ through the Word. Even if, supposedly, Christ appeared to someone in the Muslim world, that person is not converted, not born again, unless he or she accepts the Word of God to be the Truth. The Word of God takes precedence over every vision, every dream, every so-called ‘appearance of Christ’. Christ Himself upheld and magnified Scripture. The fact that we have so many different pictures of Christ – produced by so many carnal minds – shows that idolatry brings confusion (Babylon).

The temptation to visualize Christ, or the Father, or the Holy Spirit, or even angels, is nothing but a device of Satan to draw people away from God’s pure Word.

“Little children, keep yourself from idols.”
Understanding God's word does not mean that painting, film, television are idols. The understanding is tantamount to worshipping idols.

It's like someone wearing a cross is not a Christian, but thinking the cross is a decoration.

It's like someone wearing a cross is a Christian who don't truely understand word of God,but Imagine a rule for self and say it's God's rule

All images.

Love is spiritual. It is genuinely, genuinely caring for one another. Love unites us. Images are one of the many things that divide us.

the temple and its furnishings were decorated with images of cherubim, palm trees & open flowers. inside there were two carved statues of cherubim, 15 feet tall, 1 Kings 6 & 2 Chronicles 3.
the plans for the temple came from God, 1 Chronicles 28:12
God accepted it and dwelt in it, 2 Chronicles 5:13-14

so i can't agree that "
all images are poison"
